Re: Calkwalk wrk file to ???
Choose either "Bundle" or "RealMedia" from the Save as Type list. "RealMedia is a format intended for publishing audio content on the World-Wide Web. A RealMedia metafile (extension .RTS) contains file references and instructions for playing audio, video, text, and other content in real time across an Internet connection. When you save your project as RealMedia, Cakewalk writes up to three files: the RealMedia metafile, a MIDI file (extension .MID) containing the project's MIDI tracks, and a RealAudio file (extension .A Bundle file (extension .BUN) is similar to a normal project file, but it also contains the project's digital audio dataRA) containing the project's audio tracks." Quotes from Cakewalk Pro Audio8 help file.

Hey Steve
Thanks for your reply, and i have gotten some of those demos and checked them out. But after messing around with them for a couple of days i haven't been able to find a program that I could fully grasp (MY favorite so far has been Acid Music 1.0 demo)so i was wondering if there is a way to find DJ's interested in mixing songs for other people-it seems it would take me a very long time to figure out how to do it myself!
Thanks
Tony
Hey...
What sort of material do you have that needs mixing, your own songs? I have quite a list of songs to do for other people who are sending me individual tracks from their songs to re-mix and there will be other people around that will work with inspiring material. A lot of people just pinch a bunch of heavily used samples and cut and paste them to make a song, that they try and then take all the credit for, (I have a sampler myself so I don't dislike them). If you have anything that you think is remotely interesting then I would be interested to hear it although I don't do the Dj thing anymore. It's music creation with technical services and that's about it.
By the way, I have played with acid on my friends computer and it's a laugh. You will find proper music packages are complicated on the surface but using them regularly will make it second nature, that's when the real creativity begins..!

sound problems
I am at my wits end trying to make system sounds work on my p.c. I am using windows 98. The device is a yamaha opl3-sax wdm driver.
I managed to lose some driver files in windows000 (ks.cat, wdmaudio, wdma_ymh)but have recovered them now.
The sound appears to play, but nothing can be heard! I've tried the win98 help files to no avail.
All i did was uncheck some options in windows setup screen to save space!
I'm fairly new to all this and not good at solving this sort of problem (I once formatted C drive by accident!)
PLease some good SOUND advice (excuse the pun!)

Damaged Wave files
I have several wave files on my system (about 5 - 10 % of them) which now refuse to play in such programs as Sound Forge, Wave Lab or Windows Sound Recorder. I just keep getting "File type not recognised" error dialogs when I try.
Yet, these very same wave files will play perfectly fine in Windows Media Player or using the Windows amovie.ocx program. But no other wave player or wave editor apart from these 2 will work.
Does anyone know whats going on here? The files have obviously been corrupted in some way, but not damaged beyond repair (as they still play 100% correctly in Media Player).
I guess it is something to do with the wave file header information but I dont really understand the file format in that kind of depth.
Can anyone please tell me how I can repair these files.
Oh and by the way, I have also experienced corruption of all of my Acid *.acd files. They load up the various samples correctly but the tracks will not play any more.
Re: Damaged Wave files
I know that Cool Edit 96 will correct the header problem. I'm sure that the later products, such as Cool Edit pro and CE2K will also. Good luck.

Re: Damaged Wave files
OK, got more of an idea of whats going on.
I downloaded awave studio, to see if the damaged files would play when converted to another format (eg AIFF).
Upon loading the "damaged" wave files into Awave i noticed that the format was in fact "Microsoft MPEG Layer - Wave File".
I have no idea how these files came to be in this format, but I used Awave to convert them to standard "Microsoft PCM Wave file" and they now play in Sound Forge etc.
The only problem is that about half of the files did not convert well, with some having clicks and distortion that can not be easily editied out.
I dont know whether this is down to the quality of the conversion used by awave or whether it is a problem with the files themselves.
Some files would not load into awave becuase they were apparently "Mixed channel mode MPEG Streams" (odd since it was a simple mono voice sample).
So my question now is: Anyone know of a top qulaity converion program to convert from Microsoft Mpeg layer wave to standard PCM wave and one that can handle the Mixed channel mode MPEG Streams format?
Thanks
I am looking for a program that plays old different MIDI types s
I have been using some old programs on my privious computer and made some MIDI files that have extensions SNG. Now I can not find any program that can play these files. I have been searching your site for 10 hours now and didn't find what I was looking for. Please, answer me where to find these old programs to hear my comositions and convert them to MIDI files.
Mila
To be honest...
Don't hold me to it but it sounds like a steinberg song file rather than a Midi file, are you sure they were saved as midi files? If so, try changing the file extension to .MID and give that a go.
Was your old computer an Atari ST?

MP3 to WAV = Sound Quality Problem...
Hello:
I am using Adaptec software to try and burn my first CD. I used WinAmp to convert the mp3 files to WAV's, and there is a severe sound quality problem. The tracks sound great as mp3's, but when they are converted, the tracks (especially bass heavy tracks) have garbled highs... sounds kind of like turning up a stereo really loud with a huge woofer on the same amp as the highs...
Are there settings in Winamp that I need to change, or is there something else I should try?
Thanks a ton for the info.
Bill

Re: MP3 to WAV = Sound Quality Problem...
Check Winamp's EQ settings, chances are you have the EQ boosted somehwere.. when you convert, the EQ setting effects the output, if it is on, then, when you play it back iun winamp, the same frequencies are being boosted again.....

Mac Mastering?
Any comments on WaveBurner as mastering software? What else is available for Mac?
Mastering
What sort of mastering did you want to do? Mastering usually refers to the final processing of a stereo mix to make it listenable to the general populous. It usually entails Compression and Limiting routines often with subtle Eq'ing. There are great programs for the mac if this is what you want to do. There are some decent pluggins too like TC mastering....
Cheers
Steve...
Re: Mastering
Yes, as you say, making the stereo mixes listenable individualy, as well as working
with an album of songs (matching levels, overall EQ, spacing, etc) and preparing the project for final CD duplication.
Thanks,
Orest

I dont know if this question belongs here, but im having a hard time finding help about getting started mixing and making songs. I was just hoping that someone could help me find the right software (for the right price :) to get me started

Just quickly
Just quickly, have a check on this sites files area and look for Dj and Mixing, also Multitrack recording. There are a bunch of applications with descriptions that will give you an idea of what's available and let you have a go, including some of the more professional program demos.

SoundFonts
Hello everyone.
I'm avin a large problem with Soundfonts at the momment. I use a Emu APS soundcard that supports 2.1. soundfont format. i can play my custom made soundfonts via my midi keyboard directly into cubase 24 where all the midi data will be recorded perfectly. the problem comes when i want to play the midi notes back. cubase just will not do it. I've set up the inspector so that the right bank and preset are visible but cubase refuse's to play any of the infomation back. I don't quite know what to do. I had a look at emu's web page but there is nothing there of any us at all, the same goess for the steinberg site. If anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated.
"nobody wins"
About a month ago (or maybe 2), I was pleasantly
informed that I had won a prize. I thought "Oh Joy"
and waited patiently for my prize to arrive.
One month later (or maybe 2) and many emails later,
still no prize. Geoffrey and the boys from down under
informed me that the software company flaked. I get
it, but in my mind's eye this website flaked as well.
They should never offer a prize they can't deliver.
"Winners" be warned: NOBODY REALLY WINS! This is a
scam to bring traffic to the site. Geoffrey, if you
read this my downunder friend, "promises,promises"...
Re: "nobody wins"
Hello Max,
The situation is this. The company you won the prize off hasn't flaked and neither has Shareware Music Machine. The software author attempted to send you the prize but your email box at Hotmail was unable to accomodate the file due to its size. Admittedly, I found this out early last week but was unable to get around to your email due to sickness. Please bear with me as we have to look into other ways of sending you your prize. I'll be in touch.
Warm regards
Geoff Nicholson

That's sad...
That sounds really rough... I personally would have more of a chat with the website before you go off in a huff. It is their prize offering by the sounds of it and therefore their responsibility to produce the prize, not the software house. I'm sure that the website hasn't done anything as cheap as this has it? I must confess that I personally would be concerned of the objectives of a company that didn't play by the rules. I should be careful because things may not be as they seem from a so far one sided story although your words sound fair. Give us a larger description of what happened. I spend a lot of time here but wouldn't if it was for a cheap operation like that, genuinely interested! SMM is here a lot it seems and pipes up occasionally, (thanks!). What's the story..???

Multi-mic-ing
Is it possible to use multiple microphone recording on my PC. If so how?
Re: Multi-mic-ing
Okay, I presume you mean Miking a drum kit or something like that, and recording each mike onto a seperate track at the same time. The idea is simple, what you would want is a Sound card/Audio interface that has more than 2 audio inputs. Sound cards like that are expensive but it's possible.
Work out how many inputs you will need and then go down to the high tech computer music shop and have a look at the expensive ones. Outputs are usually abundant but 'many inputs' comes at a price. MOTU (mark of the unicorn) do some impressive 19" rack mounts).
The best way I can think of for the enthusiast (pro) is to have a Digital mixing desk that supports multi digital, like Adat etc... you could then have a sound card that has a Adat input and output which will allow you to interface digitally with a Adat ready soundcard (multi digital input/output). This means that you could plug in your mics and individually send them out to the different busses for recording. Also, if you use Condenser mics that require a resident 48vdc (phantom power) then you would be condenser ready!
