Just to say...

I think Roland manuals are amongst the worst of all the Japanese hightech music suppliers. I remember struggling over the Roland W30 manual and literally giving up. Don't beat yourself up by claiming that it's your fault, it's more than likely not.

Fiddle and learn with Roland products and pick up as much advice from users as possible. I hope the link will get you started on the search for users of the fine machine.

Best Wishes

Steve

Re: Just to say...

I have a mint condition w30 which I bought years ago & never used! Dont ask? Anyone out there who can help me get started, the manual is crap!

Im not particularly technical or musical actually but I have a tonne of ideas & bundles of creative energy & I just know there is a hit lurking somewhere deep inside me.

Can you help me find the way?

Need to find a digital mixer.

I am looking for a digital mixer - ie. instead of live BPM Studio etc. mixer's, one that allows me to assemble a complete CD and then record. I have been having some luck with Cool Edit, but beat matching is practically impossible as it is not really designed for it!

Does anyone have any advice?

Cheers,

Fruityloops: Saving Playlist and recording it onto CD. PLEASE HE

Okay, well---I have to say I'm having a lot of fun with this Fruityloops program. I'm going to buy it--I just have the demo right now--but it seems to be letting me do what I want to do (btw, I'm a novice, and I'm just using this program to make some really amateurish music for now.) My question is, when I have all the patterns arranged in the playlist the way I want them, can I put this in a format that I can burn onto cd? How would I go about doing this? Is there some other program I need? If not, what's the process. Thanks a million in advance--a lot of you have been really helpful and patient, and I appreciate that!

: : If you wish to save the music which you make with Fruityloops, you simply use the Export command to save as a standard .wav or .mp3 file which can then be put onto CD. Most shareware and Demo programs do not have this function available. I'm not sure what the case is with Fruityloops in this respect, but if you are buying the prog, saving your music will be no problem.

Re: Fruityloops: Saving Playlist and recording it onto CD. PLEAS

hey T it's not clear what you mean! Do you want to save the playlist info itself so that u can come back later and change it? If so you simply click 'save as' and choose to save a .flp file. This saves the all fruity info such as vol/pan/effects and sample etc. You may have to have the loop light on to save your sequence.
Now this .flp can't go on a CD I don't think because it is not an audio file but an information file.
If u want to put your song/sequence on a CD then click 'export wav file' and this file is put on CD like any other song. You need a CD Writer to do this.

Thanks! Re: Fruityloops: Saving Playlist and recording it onto C

Yes, I think you need the registered, purchased version to do this; but no problem--it's well worth the money, I decided. Thanks for all the quick, helpful advice!

How do I get a mp3 on a CD if I have a CD-Writer

Re: mp3

well one method is to convert the mp3 to a .wav file and you should have software hopefully which will burn this OK. Check www.sonicspot.com for file conversion software.

.KAR EXTENSION

I Have downloaded a simple free and neat little bouncing ball Karaoke program. i love it but it only has one sample song. It uses the .kar extention. Is that a standard karaoke file? If not can I convert to it? I also have MP3 songs. Is there an MP3 Karaoke ext? Can I convert MP3 to .wav? Visa-Versa? As you can see, I am a rookie.

Thanks

Music Notation/Mandolin/Guitar Tablature Software

Is there any software program that will generate tablature for mandolin leads from any input sound files? What I'm trying to do is play a song file through my Mac and have a software program generate the tablature notation. Anybody know of such an animal?

Hup....

You will more than likely be very disappointed if you think this is going to be a breeze. I love the idea of being able to do what you suggest but I suspect you will struggle with the results. Audio to Midi (or Note information) is the weak link. Input a 'simple' and preferably slow monophonic melody line into a Audio to Midi program and you may be able to create a reasonably accurate match. Converting that to tableture may be possible, but you will have to find that information from someone else. Logic audio on the Mac offers Audio to Midi and I have had relative success in using it, although I think it was put in there to be fashionable, rather than practical..!

Good luck, but don't keep your hopes up on either of the remaining platforms...

You can get this result however you will get the best
results if you are only trying to capture one note at
a time (more than that can be problematic), that means
it doesn't always work properly if you are trying to
play chords.

The first step is to get a program that can 'listen'
to the notes and convert them to MIDI - here's a few
programs for that:
<li><a href="http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/programs/Digital_Ear/">Digital Ear</a>
<li><a href="http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/programs/WaveGoodbye/">Wave Goodbye</a> (claims to be polyphoic - i.e. might recognise chords)
<li><a href="http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/programs/Sound2MIDI/">Sound2MIDI</a>

Then you'll need a program that can convert MIDI into
tablature - here are a few:
<li><a href="http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/programs/TablEdit/">TablEdit Tablature Editor</a>
<li><a href="http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/programs/Muse/">Muse</a>
<li><a href="http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/programs/Melody_Assistant_Win95/">Melody Assistant</a>
<li><a href="http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/programs/Power_Tab/">Power Tab</a>

Re: Sorry - you're on Mac

The advice below is correct but I've listed PC software,
I know Melody Assistant is available for Mac at
<a href="http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/programs/Melody_Assistant/">http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/programs/Melody_Assistant/</a>
but I'm not familar with any wave to MIDI program
for Mac but you might find some at either
<a href="http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/mac/FORMAT_CONVERTERS/">http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/mac/FORMAT_CONVERTERS/</a> or at
<a href="http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/mac/MIDI_PLAYERS_UTILITIES/">http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/mac/MIDI_PLAYERS_UTILITIES/</a>

Perhaps someone more familiar with Macintosh can give
you some advice.

Linking Yamaha DTX into Cubase with a SB platinum

Has anybody linked up a Yamaha DTX drum brain through a Sound Blaster Platinum Midi interface into Cubasis?.
I have tried and the sound from the PC does not resemble the same sounds on the brain. Am I missing a vital step? Is a particular driver needed, what could I be doing wrong?
If anybody has any comments please forward them to me.
Cheers

Re: Linking Yamaha DTX into Cubase with a SB platinum

Have you checked that the MIDI note numbers for the kit you are using (found at the back of the manual) correspond with the instrument sounds you want generated on the desktop?

I get this bit, but can't get any kind of successful connection at all! Any ideas as to how I'm connecting them wrongly?

What do I Need?

I want to compose music for praise and worship service. I am not a great musician, but do know the basics. I need a program where I type in the notes and beats and music comes out that we can sing to. Is there such a thing.

What you need

Priscilla, what you need is a midi sequencer. Now most midi sequencers do audio too so with a program like this you have the ability to enter midi notes and drums for up to 16 tracks on an 'edit grid' which they ALL have plus add live instruments or even the odd tambourine!

'Try before you buy' is a great motto and you can certainly do this easily. Go to www.sonicspot.com and look under 'midi/audio sequencers'. You'll find many listed and you can download demos to see if you like the program layout and can get to grips with it too! They can be complicated but they are all based around the same format.

I'd highly reccommend 'Music Centre Pro' . It's only 30 UK pounds, is easiy to use, has excellent midi features and unlike most, looks really really nice onscreen. The version on sonicspot is outdated so get the latest demo from www.databecker.com and you won't look back! If you get this one I'd be only too happy to give you the odd tip if you get stuck.

steve

PS you also need an onboard soundcard for computer music which will act as your sound module or 'voice bank'

Re: What do I Need?

As far as typing in notes, you kind of need to know the notes you're putting into it. IF you don't play the piano at all, you could get a cheap basic sequencing program and probably find midi files of songs, even praise and worship songs.
Midi files, basically loads a song into the pc, as if you composed it yourself. Then get a small 16 midi channel sound module like a Korg x5r, (under $400 used) and you can assign different sounds to the parts being played.
You'll need midi files, or know someone who can sequence the songs for you.
A small midi to pc box (about $50)
A sound module, (about $200 to $3000)
A basic sequencer (free to under $100 for you needs)

plz recommend some music generating programs that include real s

I have an okay knowledge of music, having done about
10 years of school music, but have since let it slip
due to perhaps laziness, or maybe the woefully
uninspiring music education system where I am. Anyway,
I want to get back into it.

I have downloaded some programs (Jammer Pro. 4.0,
Tangent v. 1.0), but I am disappointed with the
electronic sounds they produce - the guitar sounds
like a sick cat, symbols sounds like a wire
hitting a garbage bin lid, you get the picture. I
am after sounds, like choir sounds (real choir
sounds), real strings, real bass guitar sounds.
Are there any programs out there that let me
compose, and have some real sounds, or do i
have to compose using the electronic sounds,
then go out and find the real sounds
myself?

Re: plz recommend some music generating programs that include re

shawn you have made a mistake I think. I don't know these programs you have but are they using audio samples OR midi sounds? If audio samples then all you need do is search the web for better quality samples and load these into your programs instead of the cat sounds you have at present!

However if u are using midi sounds then these don't come from the programs! The program only sends messages to your soundcard which is where all your voices are kept. You may in this case need to buy a better sound card. Possibly it is fine though and you could get a better sofware synth from Yamaha for instance. Check their site. I have a S-YXG 50 wich came on a CD with my computer. You may be able to download a demo and see if your cat is replaced with a choir boy!

You R using MIDI

Checked progs shawn and these are midi sequencers you've got there so all sounds are generated by your soundcard. Now if you want real instrument sounds then you should use 'samples' instead of midi generated sounds which are created electronically. Download a 'fruityloops' demo. It has plenty of real samples with it to try. You can also use samples in sequencers but a loop creator like fruity is easier to do this with.
Now midi doesn't always sound like tin cans it can sound just as sweet as audio and is easier to manipulate so you should look into your soundcard and/or software synth for better results.

Adaptec Problems?

I recently purchased a new computer with a CD burner so my daughter could create CDs to play in her Walkman. The computer came with Adaptec EZ CD Creator (v 4), but I have been unable to actually record a CD. I tried moving mp3 songs from the upper right-hand panel of Adaptec to the lower CD "layout panel", but the recording process did not work. I then downloaded an MP3 to Wav converter program, converted all the MP3s to Wav and tried to record the WAV files to CD - again, no luck. What format do the music files need to be in for Adaptec to work? (The Adaptic Help feature is virtually useless).

Thanks in advance for the help.

Cubase 5.0... DON'T..!!!

QUOTE:

For anyone who is currently considering buying Cubase 5.0 for PC...DON'T!!!! Especially if you are using a Motu or Opcode midi interface. The copy protection system that ships with Cubase 5.0 is INCOMPATIBLE with these two brands of midi interfaces. Steinberg refuses to fix this problem. In addition USB interfaces are unuseable with this program as a "All Notes Off" message will crash the program and the computer.

I use an Opcode midi translator pc midi interface with no problem with Cubase 5.0/32 The thing to do is install an additional parrallel port interface ....it costs about $20 I did have problems with audio stuttering using a Midiman midisport usb interface.

HELP! LOSS OF MEMORY ON ATARI CUBASE

My Atari 1040ST has come up with the message 'not enough memory' even though the disk I'm using only has about 6000 bytes used for the track I'm arranging. This is obviously not a disk problem (I think) - has anyone encountered this problem. I've been quoted about £100 to have the memory increased to 2MB (only 1MB at the mo) and £70 for the kit if I want to do it myself. Is it really this expensive to increase it (the whole unit was barely more than this) and is it a difficult operation to do yourself, if indeed this is the problem. Can anyone help?

Memory

I suspect the memory report is real unless the file is corrupted in some way and carries more information to the sequencer than is needed.

1meg should be enough for a decent sized song although that would depend on how many controller changes (mod wheel etc...) you have used. Those functions eat up memory very quickly. You obviously have the pre-STE version of the ST which means the memory upgrade is very expensive and much harder to retrofit. You would be far better off buying a used STE which are so cheap these days with 2mb or maybe 4mb of memory. My friend sold his 2 meg STE the other week for £35 with a few spares as well... Think about it and search some ad's. I bet there are literally millions of STE's sitting in peoples cupboards getting dusty...

Steve...

another problem...

After recording a track with my guitar and pressing playback it works fine. But if I alter the volume a bit louder from track properties and press playback I can't hear a thing. Please help me!

Cakewalk metronome

Cubase VST Instrumen Pathches

Please help me. I am new to the world of midi. I have a small in house pre-production studio and I have just hit my first rock. I am currently using Cubase VST 24. Now, I can hear my songs through the midi tracks but.. they are playing the wrong instruments.
How do I fix it? I heard I need specific patch
for each instrument I plan on using. Is there any
truth to that. If so, please tell me how or point me
in the direction of someone who can. Any info is helpful. Thank you

Hi does this happen when you load a midi file from elsewhere say a download or do you mean you record and save something when you open it again it is playing the wrong instruments? If it is the first it is probably a different midi type there is midi 0 and Midi1 just a matter of converting them if it is the latter it may be more serious you are quite welcome to e mail me with exactly what is going wrong if you like

Cool Edit 2000 only exports RealMediaG2 files but does not load them. Seems that RealNetworks bought all the Software to convert rm files like ra2wav!
