Re: Wavelab vs. Red Roaster
I have used both and have decided that overall Red Roaster wins hands down wavelab is nice but
roaster is a programm with nothing missing at all
I have masterd 5 cd's now using this software with a yamaha 4416SX and a RMI digi 32 card running on WinNT4 my sysytem is a doulble pentium 200MMx and have no problems...wave pales in to insignifice for me no way to multi track no automated mix down..nice for recording stuff for my sampler, but really it is the audio editor steinberg forgot to include with VST and for that it is very good, but for mastering CD's i canot recomend it abouve any of SEKD 's products.
As far as ease of use it isn't quite as quick to learn as wavelab but the extra effort is really worth it!!, I allows you to use any direct X plugs, and there isn't any thing as far as editing faciltys goes, great stuff like on the fly sample rate conversion, and it will even rip audio strait from your SCSI Cd....
A real killer app

Change music tempo while retaining pitch
To assist learners of Celtic music, I need to be able to take a CD track and slow it down as much as 50% without changing the pitch of the music so that learners can learn and play along with the music until they are able to play it faster. I would take the original CD track, modify it to half tempo and burn it onto a learners CD. This would greatly assist those learning Celtic music much of which is played at a hectic pace.
Please advise where I can a simple and super cheap utility or application which will do this successfully for me.
Thanks for your help.

Re: Change music tempo while retaining pitch
Hello,
I've been trying to get the same tool without much luck.
While there are a number of skins etc for winamp, none
seem to work on my computer. On a friend's some
DSP plug-ins work but crash the machine.
There are dedicated packages out there that will
do the stuff if you are willing to spend between
$50 - $100 and more.

Re: Change music tempo while retaining pitch
I use Cool Edit for this feature to transcribe notes from CDs etc. It's available as shareware at www.syntrillium.com

Re: Change music tempo while retaining pitch
There's a dsp plugin that'll work with Winamp etc. and do exactly what you want. You can grab it at my site in the Skins section.

CakeWalk 8 problems
I use CakeWalk 8 to mix songs and make my own cds. I only insert wav files from other CD and mix them. Randomly, when I try to insert a wav file Cakewalk 8 says "Unable to import wave file. The audio disk may be full". I have plenty of room (1gb) in my disk and I can continue to insert another wav files, but the ones that produces the message are imposible.
Someone had this problem? Any sugestion?
Thanks all!

Re: CakeWalk 8 problems
Copy your WAV-File to your Harddisk first and THEN
import it in CakeWalk. I don't know CakeWalk, but it could be
that CakeWalk tries to make a temporary (Peak)file in the
same directory where the WAV-File is located.

Virtual Drummer 4.0.3, unstuff?
I've downloaded it ten times but it won't unstuff. Is it a bad file, or am I just lame?
Can you tell me what this tool is
I have seen several web pages (mostly hiphop sites) with a utlility that allows them to embed a sample in a webpage and loop it. Three buttons appear "Play", "Loop" and "Stop", or something like that. What is this utility, how do you use it, and where can I get it. (I'm sure it's at this site, I just don't know what it's called) Emailed response appreciated.

making rock/techno etc software
i need an easy to use rock/techno digital music making software?, i have used the demo of future beat and also Koan X silver, i prefer future beat though.
The question is - is there a really good program out there that is not too expensive but can make really good music?, i don't have much experience with music making at all, but just seem really interested by these two programs.
thanx
Re: making rock/techno etc software
seems as you were searching for a simple to
handle program to make music...
music maker.
I don't like it but it's easy to understand and
all you need are WAVe-samples. there a lots of
programs in this style (audio-sequencers) and they
often cost less than $40.
but if you want to go a step further get a
tracker (fast tracker 2, impulse tracker). with
these progs you can play notes and the IT also
offers resonance and cutoff filters.
if you want to have a copy send an email.

Re: Making Rock/Techno/Jazz software YES
: A simple to use program to make music...
: "Band in a Box". It uses MIDI, you don't need a heavy computer to use it, and it's not expensive
: I like it but it's not really build to play Techno. It plays Jazz, country -heavy metal. you just have to fill out the Chords.
: You don't need any WAVE-samples which eats all the memory of your computer. Use the sound from a General Midi compatible SoundCard or any external Sound sound source that cab be triggered true MIDI. Enjoy the music.

MusicTime 2.0 on Win95
OK, its been 2 years since I've used Windows 3.1 and Music Time. A lot has changed - or so I thought. I upgraded my computer to Windows 95 about a year and a half ago. I go to install MusicTime 2.0 (from floppy) on my computer, and everything installs fine. Go to start up MusicTime, and get this wonderful error message:
"A device attached to the system is not working"
Can anyone give me a hand with this? PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, email any help you can provide, as this isn't a forum I usually visit, and I probably won't find it again. Thank you all in advance.

OK......This is the solution I found and it worked. Your system it doesn't recocognize anastasia font, even though is in the font directory. Get ATM (Adobe Type Manager) load it and load through this way the fonts that Music time directory has, like anastasia and others.
If you can not load the fonts it might be a need to uninstall a few fonts from the windows directory because there is a limit for that.
Good luck..

T-Racks
I am trying to run the demo of TRacks, but I seem to have a display problem. When I open the prog, I don't get the CP or anyhting accessable. All I have is a "shockwave-like" black screen with freq. readings etc.
Anyone have an ideas ????

delete it.
T-Racks is worthless anyway. They spent all their time making it look good instead of making it worthwhile. It's stupid.
Look into something like CEP or Sound Forge and then get some plugs..

ORCHESTRATOR format converter needed
I need an ORCH to MIDI format converter, because I had my DIGITAL ORCHESTRATOR sequencer bought together with one of my soundcards, but recently I lost my CD and I really need a converter to transform my ORCH files into MIDI files. I don't want at all to buy a new DIGITAL ORCHESTRATOR, I think it's a good sequencer but I work with better sequencers right now.
Re: ORCHESTRATOR format converter needed
: MIDI Orchestrator (Plus) should do since it's practically DOP minus the audio functions, 'diatonic transpose', looping and some of the more advanced MIDI transform options (unless Voyetra implemented them after my interest in the program waned somehow). If you need to recover any audio tracks from your ORC files you won't be able to save them in a MIDI format anyway. (You can manually extract them in an audio editor such as WaveLab or Sound Forge opening the ORC files as raw audio data.)
MIDI Orchestrator Plus shouldn't be hard to get. It used to accompany the AWE cards so ask your friends or check the Voyetra and Creative sites.
Best techno software to use
What would you guy's say is the best package of software (Freeware would be nice) for making techno songs. I'm an avid musician in a band and have been looking for a long time at getting into rave, dance, and techno music. What's the best possible way to start out, preferably for the least amount of $$.
Thanx

HOW CAN I CHANGE THE FREQUENCY (KHZ) OF A WAV FILE?

Seeking (Macintosh) software advice
I have looked through a number of leading mail-order and developer websites for products -- and am bewildered. (But not bewitched or bothered.)
I sing in a community chorus and sometimes I need to work on my vocal part by putting my part in a notation program and playing it back, over and over, until I get it right. (It's effective, even though it is like dating an elementary school teacher.) This worked fine back when I had my Mac SE and DCMS was my only application choice, but now I have a Power Mac 6500 and am having trouble finding software that does the same sort of thing.
Is there a software package you'd recommend that would allow me to notate my part and play it back? Please note: << I do not need to produce music copy, or ready-to-publish music. I am neither a composer or an arranger. I simply want to create a file that will reproduce a single part-line so that I can practice my vocal part>>
I am not a music professional or composer, so Finale and Allegro are really "overkill." Can you recommend a freeware, shareware, or software product (and its online or URL source) that would help me accomplish this?
[System: Power Mac 6500/300 running on Mac OS 8.1, 64 Mb RAM, no MIDI/keyboard interface. See, DCMS on an old SE was just fine... but cannot run on Power Mac.]

What do you think of mp3.com?
Is there some kind of musicians backlash looming for MP3.com? I've noticed on web sites and newsgroups that some musicians have been dissatisfied with the numbers of CDs they've sold (or lack of). I don't get it! Mp3.com gives bands a pretty good deal for free in a similar way that Geocities gives free web space. But they don't promise to sell all your CDs or turn you into a star. Nor should they. They give you some of the tools you might need to get well known. I get the idea that some people (unhappy musicians) think they should be 'big' simply because they've got a few MP3 files on their page and have a cool site. That's really not enough. If you want to sell your music, there's more to it than bunging a few files on a server and hope people will pay. All of us like free stuff and if a song is good we'll download it and keep it. Will we pay for it though? Have you bought every song you liked when you downloaded it off MP3.com? I haven't.
But are people happy with MP3.com? This maybe not the best place to post this message but I know there's heaps of muso people here who might have something good to say. I'm just curious what people think...

Audio file formats Demystified??
Okay........a little help please!!!!!!
Audio file formats.........wav...........MP3...............ra................etc
(that's not a format abbreviation...that stands for etcetera)
Can someone explain for us novices what the differences are between these formats and
how we can go about converting them from one to another as needed!!!!!
Mainly, what is the accepted format for CD?????? Is "redbook standard" a particular
format?? If so, which??????
Re: Audio file formats Demystified??
WAV - uncompressed audio standard format. Best for quality. Takes up an enormous amount of disk space (hence the "need" for all the other formats.
CDA - the format of tracks on an ordinary Audio CD. Simply they are WAVs "cataloged" to play in a CD Player.
MP3 - compressed (generally about 11 to 1) WAV files. Great for storing on a HD, but suffer from drastic sound quality loss. Perfect for playback on a computer (or similar.) Can be "uncompressed" or decoded back to WAVs and burned onto a CD, but the resulting quality is very poor.
RA - Real Audio files, another compressed file, generally used for internet purposes (in conjecture with Real Player). Again, quality is forfeited for size and usability.
VQF, WMA (etc) - Various (albeit, less common) alternatives to MP3s. They all claim to be better than the other.
The most common "conversions" are as follows...
"Ripping a CD" to MP3 - Here you take a CD and "rip" the tracks off of it to your HD. 1001 programs to do this, some good some bad. Variables in this conversion include bitrates and sample rates and the choices made will determine sound quality and size.
For internet purposes, the standard, at the moment is 160kbs@44,100hz.
"decoding" a MP3 to a WAV - Here you are taking a compressed file and uncompressing it to enable you to write it to a CD. The resulting CD, while suffering in Sound Quality, can be played back on any CD player as would a "normal" Audio CD.
Converting MP3s to VQFs to RAs etc, can all be done, but the need for this isn't that great. Many audio players can play back several file types.
