Re: It's good to learn
Stever - you're a beaver. Shut the hell up. You couldnt find you ass with a Sherpa. So quit lookingup other folks' butt for fun. Stick your head back up your ass.
: I think reading up on editing is a far idea although I have always found that people with a decent grasp of their 'cut and paste' shortcuts will found the whole experience quite natural.
: I know there is a lot to learn but most people I know have learnt just by clicking and deleting (etc) with an unimportant audio document.
: Think Zoom, Cut and Paste.
: Check out Amazon for audio engineer and editing books.
: Alternatively, just pop back here when you can and ask a few editing questions. There are a few regulars here that know their stuff..!

Re: It's good to learn
I sent for a book from amazon.com but it seems to be more about midi files and recording instruments into sound files. I will keep trying. I just don't understand a lot of the things regarding the editing tools in my software - I have done some things that worked ok but still feel overwhelmed. Thanks for the advice though - appreciate it.

AVI to MOV Converter
Does anyone knows how to convert a AVI video
to a MOV video?
Thank you for your concern.
Re: AVI to MOV Converter
There is a Mac version of Avi to Mov (quicktime) on sites like Versiontracker.com and CNET. Go check them out if you use a Mac

Re: AVI to MOV Converter
Thank you for your concern, but I still haven't found this kind of converter. Anyway thank you very much.

Re: AVI to MOV Converter
Seeing you didn't squirm when I mentioned the Mac version, I assumed that is the platform you are working with.
I thought I would find it for you. It really wasn't hard though. Try using search engines like Google.com

Vinyl to PC glitch problem
I have been attempting to record cassettes into the PC. I have used various programs
- MusicMatch
- Total recorder
- LP recorder
- CD Wave Editor ( Insert track breaks )
- Graphic Equalizer
- etc.
Whatever program I use, I end up with "glitches" in my music. These are essentially millisecond skips in the wav tracks. They are easy to hear since I am a DJ. As you know, it is time consuming enough to put a patch together on your PC, move files around, clean them up, insert track breaks, and burn them on CD, only to find that the music had flaws at the time of recording. I even looked at a program called Glitch Remover, but the type of artifact it removes is not synomymous with the content that apparently PC recording takes out in the first place ( i.e. the true music ).
I am particularly disturbed since one of the reasons I purchase this Dell 1.9 GHz XP system with TWO 80 GB hard drives, 256 MB RAM, and Santa Cruz Sound Card was to record and archive my old record collection. Inacuracies in this make the effort futile and exasperating.
I really appreciate your forum and the wealth of nusic software programs.
If you have any advice here, short of me purchasing a $5000+ pro recording and mastering set up, I would really appreciate it !
Best regards,
Alan
Re: Vinyl to PC glitch problem
I had the same time wasting problem of mini repeats when transferring music from cassette to CD. I solved the problem by changing the soundcard and the soundcard software drivers and haven't had the same problem since. Changed to Soundblaster Live card and had someone install its drivers for me. I didn't change anything else.

Royce
Re: Vinyl to PC glitch problem
I found this on Google:
http://www.ganymede.hemscott.net/tutorial.htm
Try this tutorial for some more info. I am interested in following this up as I would like to find a way to record house sets on my PC too.
Also try http://www.digido.com
I suspect the main issue you are having is the way that analogue to digital data is processed in a PC operating environment. But that's all I can suggest as there is software that enables a digital copy from CD and totally bypasses the sound card which will always produce a glitch in every single recording.
Re: Vinyl to PC glitch problem
It's hard to know what to say Alan. The chances are, it has something to do with the soundcard as far inferior machines in terms of speed have been able to glitch free record from an audio input for some time.
Seeing this happens with all of your software choices, it has to have something to do with the OS or the drivers for the card itself... (Mac user so guessing here)...
Check the website for driver updates.. I suspect there is problem with XP and the soundcard interfacing...
Good luck

Owners Manuals
[The body of this post has been reconstituted from replies so it may differ from what was originally written.]
I just purchased a used Fostex DMT-8 Multitracker but wasn't lucky enough to get the manual. Is there a place on the www to download the manual without having to pay? I can get it from fostex for $25. Not bad. I'd still like a freebie if at all possible.
Re: Owners Manuals
C'mon! Just buy the manual. AND don't post requests like this here. They only get removed.

Cover your tracks.
Sound Sculptor 2 is very compact, memory-efficient, and nice. It fits on a floppy diskette, but has 4 to eight tracks and good help and effects.
For serious advancement, though, a program with VST and DirectX capabilities and MIDI is going to be a real advantage.
Anything by Steinberg or Digidesign will do well for you. Cubas{e/is} or ProTools is what I'm talking about until they come out with Nuendo, or whatever.
Having virtual instruments is nice too. When you want to expand, there are lots of modules to download for free online, and most of them are really small, so the downloading is fast and easy. Some VST downloads are as small as about 33K. The MIDI BPM settings are more precise in both of these environments, also. Some VST instruments let you load up and play audio files as MIDI instruments, so remix and drum machine possibilities are expansive.
These are pretty cool because they both work on Macs and PCs. ProTools has a free version available on a CD-Rom in the mail, and I think even Cubasis is now free somewhere.
Even if you use other programs, these two programs I have recently decided pretty much eat up the competition in terms of collective and future advantages.
Re: multi-channel recodring on Mac G4
Try ProTools FREE as it's a proper (but cut down) version of ProTools (very cut down but it works).
Spark ME (it's a two track) seems to be a free download at the moment, for OSX users I think. It's worth the download if you have.
Both Steinberg and Emagic offer lower end versions of their top shelf programs. Cubase and Logic Audio, respectively. Logic Fun is free on some magazine CD's from time to time. Logic AV isn't so expensive and is quite advanced. I've never used Cubasis but it might be worth a look.
I saw an OSX program in action called 'Live' which did impress in some ways. The reviews have been good so that is worth a look.
To me, the sound quality is paramount as it helps you realise a decent tune by being impressed with the clarity of what you are doing. Whilst thinking about software, think about PCI and Firewire audio interfaces.

sample c.d editing...
just got a job offer editting sample cdroms. is there any knowledge to learn from out there???
thanx
Re: sample c.d editing...
I would have thought that observing the time between the samples of professional sample CD's, AND the relative volume of the samples in relation to each other.
I think the second point is very relative as if you are sampling from a CD and you find many of the samples require you adjust the input level of the sampler, you may think that it wasn't very professionally put together.
The content, I think, should be varied and not too effected which will leave the user the option of adding and changing the sound from it's raw beginnings.

Need Advice
I have been recording at a local studio with the same producer and I am a bit tired of not having my own say so I want to record as much as I can at home without vocals hopefully may be using/recording a guitar, then when I go into the studio I can take a demo of what I want. Sooooo, what I need is a recording programme for newbees/idiots to let me get started. I know once I get into it I can then advance to "bigger and brighter" programms but I want to start simple (for the simple minded. Can anyone recommed a "simple" programme.

MakingWaves (Win95/98,etc) or SoundSculptorII (MacOS 68K-current
If you have a mac, use Sound sculptor II. It is very small, shareware, and if you pay, it's only about 25 bucks. The most current version has 8 tracks with built-in delay panning, which is an unusually nice extra feature, but the whole thing is totally easy to learn. There is online help for every single command and window and button. The program doesn't seem to have any bugs at all, and even works on really old macintoshs. The entire program can fit on a floppy diskette, which is nice too.
If you have a PC, I would suggest Cubasis which is still very cheap and comes with WaveLab Lite also. I don't recommend installing Master Unit which comes on the CD-Rom also, but it's there if you need it. I think the whole disk is something like 30 to 50 dollars. The nice thing about the store-bought version is that the printed manual comes in a nice book that is pretty easy to read.
Cubasis is a better deal, but it might be too much to learn at once. There is are really cute program for PC called MakingWaves which is super easy to use and has great pattern sequencing capabilities.

Tape To MP3
I would like to attach my tape deck to the PC sound card and create MP3 files from my tapes. Is this possible and what software do I need?

Yes. Audio editor. Do what a lot of people do and get the full answer by looking around on this site. Your question gets asked several times a week in this forum.

Where to find the end credits tune to "Flight of the Navigator"?
Damn good tune it is, a predictable film, and a hard to fine music score cheers..
Re: Where to find the end credits tune to "Flight of the Navigat
You can (sometimes) find the theme music on file sharing programs like Kazaa or Morpheus. The best one at the moment seems to be Kazaa Lite which removes the annoying adverts.
Love this film, had to buy it on VHS.
P.S, if you can't find the songs, I can share them through Kazaa for you. Just post a reply.
Re: Where to find the end credits tune to "Flight of the Navigat
I have k-lite but i cant find the music anywhere u know what the actual song names are cos all im typing in is flight of the navigator trying to find it.
To LOGICAL GUY
What proportion of your time do you spend answering our questions and how do you know the answers to so many of them?
Smiles for the lego web cam.
I don't spend that much time answering questions. Maybe 5 minutes per question. I usually answer a bunch of questions at the same time by keeping open separate windows of my browser for each question. Then I open up some more windows for running search engine queries, almost always on <b>Google.com</b>. For more interesting questions, I'll spend maybe up to 15 minutes on it, but it's actually less time, since I respond to one question while thinking about others.
This is one of my favorite sites, though. And, I type pretty fast; 45-50 wpm, maybe higher, when I type what I'm thinking directly.
I know some answers because I have been studying electronic music and recording and related technologies since 1987 as a hobby. I have also taken some college-level courses in computer science and sound engineering.
I'm currently in the process of deciding whether or not I want to officially get into computer programming for audio or just focus on making music. Since I only work part time, I have extra time on my hands, and it's good mental exercise for me to keep thinking about these issues.
Most of the questions asked here, though, are variations on the same kinds of questions the folks at Electronic Musician, Mix, EQ, Keyboard, and Sound On Sound magazines have been answering for years. In the nineties I used to read a lot of those kinds of magazines and books regularly. Coincidentally, the nineties is when most digital audio innovations really took off full blast, as did the internet.
I also read various on-line and print articles by hackers and system administrators and technical support people, even when I'm just browsing stuff I might not buy or download.
The lamest thing about all of this, is that I still don't use any of my previous knowledge or skills for any jobs yet. I do have many other interests, though.
When I get tired of computer junk, I think about psychology and philosphy and politics and sociology. Information theory is especially cool. I like to study the overlapping parts of different topics. A lot of this digital audio junk hype is really more interesting from a sociological standpoint, or a business marketing standpoint.
When it comes down to it, though, somebody out there is waiting for me to admit that I spend too much time here. Yeah, they're maybe right some days. But while other people are thinking about who is going to win the Olympics or what Enron is going to deny or what songs Ludakriss will come up with next, I'm wondering what's the most time, money, and resource-efficient digital composition and recording set-up.
Pretty geeky, huh?
Cool Band-in-a-box files download site gets a bit fussy
I think you all know that there is this egroup called BIABfsg, short of Band-in-a-box File Sharing Group, URL:
http://www.groups.yahoo.com/group/biabfsg
this group is very cool with all those 10000 biab files to download. Nonetheless, now they have this big discuss about copyright.....but, still, it is nice to download all those files anyway

Re: encore for XP
It won't run on XP...go to <www.gvox.com> for info on Encore and other Passport products. While shopping recently for a new PC, it was suggested to me that it would be necessary to either partion the hard drive on a computer with XP or add a second hard drive and instal Windows 95 or 98 on which to run older programs such as your Encore. I opted for Windows ME installed on our new PC and my Passport music program seems to run fine on it.

I got VS880 but the hardidsk is absolutely disfunction, I can't use it any more. But I couldn't find a small size like 1 or 2G harddisk. So what can I do now?
2.5"
I think they are standard 2.5 inch HD. I have a spare one for my older VS which is easily replaceable.
Check with Roland to make sure. I have always found their technical support rather good.

How to remove Program Change on GM Channel 10
How to remove Program Change on GM Channel 10 in 100s of midi files, to play them on my non really GM kompatible alsesis quadrasynth.
many thanks!
peter
Re: How to remove Program Change on GM Channel 10
Manually I suspect by loading them into a midid sequencer and then deleting the control message.
If the problem is that the synth is changing to the wrong patches for the midi sounds, there is a chance that the synth allows you to switch of Midi Program change messages. Look for Midi Exclusive Message, OR GM Program Change. Something like that, and then turn it off. Some sequencers will allow you to buffer midi information to and from itself. This could include controller information
The next message you post, make sure that you give all the information as to what you are trying to achieve. I am guessing a lot here..

multiformat to .wav converters
Is there any TOOL FOR converting(decoding).aud,.dss etc in to .wav format,if so please let me know and
if not please give me the guidelines where i can get this information.
If your really stuck..
This is a platform specific question and I use a Mac. Most people on this forum seem to use Windows so I wont get involved with specifics.
The reason I reply then is because many people look for format convertors to enable them to change one audio format (usually two track stereo) into another. I doubt that there is a solution for all of these format changing requirements other than one I can think.
If you need to change the audio format and there isn't a app available, then you could always record it in the traditional way by recording the audio from the computer to something like a Minidisc, Audio CDRW or Dat machine and then sample it back to the computer as the format you want.
This helped one person out of a sticcky situation. Just a thought, maybe a last resort....
