volume leveler on number of files
hi.im looking for a program that i can use to grab a couple of my mp3's or wavs and make the volume on every file equal.
if anyone knows of anything like this give me a buzz on my email or here
Normalise
Normalising is more than likely the best your going to get. It's common in audio editors and there maybe a stand alone version somewhere.
Normalising works by analysing the volume peaks of a wave and adjusts the whole volume of the wave so that the loudest point is just below digital clipping (overload basically).
The problem with this is that sometimes the wave can suffer adverse sound adjustments so be careful by keeping the original wave file seperately.
Also, the level of the track doesn't often give you the impression of the perceivable volume to the human ears.
What I mean by this is, TV adverts often appear louder than the film or program they rudely interrupt. Increasing the volume of the commercials over that of the program is (was 10 years aho in the Uk) illegal and therefore the advertisers cheekily increased the certain midrange bandwidths to get your attention. Strictly speaking (in my book) this is increasing the volume regardless if it's the whole bandwith at the same time or not.
The reason I pointed that out is to show that overall average volumes may never be fixed by normalising. They get close but sometimes you get a bright track and sometimes a dull one. Identify them and place them increasing in perceived volume from the start of the CD to the end...

more than 16 channels in cubase?
Hey i wanna know how you control the tracks (faders, etc.) after 16 tracks. Theres only 16 channels, and only 16 fader in the channel mixer, but you can go up to like 72 tracks. how do i control the tracks on screen after track 16? Thank you

Music Quest 8port/SE - win98SE question
I am trying to install an 8port under win 98SE. I have downloaded driver 1.62.
Problem1: the driver details says it's version 1.3. Is this correct, or is the 1.62 zip file I found corrupt?
Problem 2:when trying to open a program that uses the midi inputs (like Logic), I get an error message:
Unable to unlock input memory header"
Midi output works fine, the diag program that comes with the driver reports ok, and the patch program works fine retrieving and storing programs.
What about the parallell port settings. Should it be set to Normal, ECP, EPP or bidirectional in the bios?

Voquette Software
Hello,
I just purchase a Sharp MD-MT15 Mini-Disc as a great discount, which was bundled with software to download streaming media from the Internet for recording and listening at a later time. The software is from a company called Voquette. They have stopped supporting this software and have moved from the consumer marketplace to a business-to-business one. The software called, Voquette Media Manager had a nice interface that would allow the user to drag web links into the window and the software is suppose to connect to each link in sequence and play the RealAudio or Windows Media files. It even allowes for scheduled downloads at a later time (at night). This all sounds great, but since the company isn't supporting the software anymore, I am unable to register the product and get a serial number to "Web Enable" the software.
Question: Does anyone know of another software program that will do the same thing or similar? Or is there someone out that was able to register their software before the company stopped supporting it. If so, I would like to try your serial number to see if the program would operate. At this time all I can get it to do is convert text to speech of text and MS-Word documents. I really would like to have it link to audio content(sequentially)and play them. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

From a legal point of view, I had a problem with support for my fathers old portable word processor as he needed some replacement ink cartridges for printing. It turns out that in england, the support for a product must run for at least five years after the product is discontinued. Whether this is the same with software/hardware sales I don't know but it's worth checking out with a lawyer.
I have a sound card that is no longer supported for software updates and I bought it no more than a couple of years ago. Still in battle with Korg over that one...

I haven't tried calling Voquette. They are still in business. Don't know if they would be willing to give me a serial number for the software or not, since their website says that they have taken the registration server off-line. Guess it's worth a try. I have sent a email, but didn't receive a reply. Thanks for your suggestion.

I don't know about Goldwave but Cool Edit is fully XP compatible. New version 2.0 due out soon.

Cubase 5 and MIDI output (again)
Is it too trivial or too difficult? Another try!!Hi, I think I'm missing something basic. Maybe somebody can help me.
I have a PC running Cubase 5 with a PulsarII and a Maxi Studio ISIS (youth error) I use(d) only for MIDI sounds for first drafting. Use(d) because untill I was running Cubase 3.7 using the on-board MIDI was a piece of cake: Edit>GM/GS/XG Editor and once the MIDI "mixer" was opened just clicking on the bottom of the MIDI strip opened a drop down menu where I could chose which instrument on the ISIS I wanted to play on that MIDI channel. Wonderful!!
Now with Cubase 5 the MIDI mixer becomes a real mixer but you cannot change the output!! The only explanation in the doc is "you cannot change this parameter here" !! Thanks, and where can I change it?
Then I tried the set up instruments. In the script\patchnames directory no sign of ISIS related stuff and on their web site nothing. Is it possible that I am the only one having a shiver along the shoulder thinking to set instrument using program change messages?

Neither too trivial or too difficult for the right person. I don't use Cubase any more so I don't know the answer.
People here come and go and the ones with the answers can be few and far between. People rarely get an immediate response here.
If I were you, I would be hanging around the Cubase forums.. There are tons of them after all.

Try Total Recorder - It will record the sounds coming from the Audible player and going to your hard drive. You can then convert them to MP3 (and after that, it's best to use an MP3 splitter to break them up for Audio CDs, MP3 players, etc).
I've already converted the first two Wheel of Time books this way!

Hi,
telephone lines give a bad sound (16 khz). Does anybody know a possibility to improve the voice (after having recorded it with a telephone hybrid)??

"After having recorded it with a telephone hybrid" this is a very cryptic sentence. Anyhow, transmissions over classical telephone lines implies filtering of the incoming signal (the voice) to remove useless (for intellegibility)frequencies. This means that only signals from around 500Hz to 4500 Hz go through. Unless you ask your telephone operator to install for you a special line... If, in addition, the voice has been already recorded, then the only thing you can do is to process it with effects. Tweaking is the only way, but do not expect miracles!

I doubt it. There is actually little information around that frequency. More an airy sound.
I think an analogue telephone system works between 3-5khz although take that with a pinch of salt as it is information I have retained from years ago and I can't remember who told me. Could be right though.. Anyway...
What do you mean by 'Improving' the voice. Surely not for a singing role? maybe for effect...How do you mean?

"How to use the Mk-50 with regular midi files..."
The unit can load and save both midi and the roland format. To Load (or Save) to the roland format:
-> Mode 1 Midi Recorder
-> disk
-> 1 Load [Song File}
to load
(or turn dial to -> 2 Save [Song file]
To load (or Save) in standard midi format:
< -> Mode 1 Midi Recorder
-> disk
6 Load [Midi File]
(or turn dial to -> 7 Save [Midi File]
You can load and save in the same format, or load in one format and save in another. In other words, you can download SMF format from off the web and 6 Load [Midi file] and work with it in the Mk II. Or, you can 1 Load [Song File] of work you've saved before and then 7 Save [Midi File] it to an SMF format.
I hope this is helpful.

I have the MC-50 mkII. I'm going to have the manual online on my website in adobe acrobat format. So look out for the website. I'm in the process of uploading it sometime this weekend. The website isn't up yet but it's www.b-tru.com. I used the MC-50 mkII to produce some songs for 2pac. I did song number 10 on 2pac's second album. I used the MC-50 , a Roland R-8 drum machine, the first Proteus, and a Roland S-330 sampler. The album is now double platinum. It's all about the ears and the skills.
NTI CD Maker 2000 problem with audio CD
I have made a compilation CD from various audio CDs. The burning has been OK but the problem is that I have to manually move from track to track on the burnt CD. It will not play continuously. I am using NTI CD maker 2000 Standard edition. Any idea what is causing this or what I may be doing wrong?

Converting MP3s into WAVs for editing.
Can I Convert MP3 files into WAV files so I can edit any defects or even just be able to nomalize the volume level of the tracks. This would save me the trouble of having to use the actual CD when I've already converted all my CD tracks to MP3s only to find out that the volume levels are all different. Any advice or recommendation of software would be appreciated. Thank You.

I doubt there is an Audio editor made today that wont open Mp3's with the same ease as you can open an uncompressed file (.wav/.aif). What you save it out as is then up to you.
The file size will grow to around 10 times that of the Mp3 although the quality lost in the uncompressed format when converted to Mp3 originally can't be regained. In this case, you better to edit the raw uncompresed file first and then compress the result.

A rookie needs advice
I have an idea for combining digital video and still photos and I need to find out what kind of software I would need to accomplish this. I want to video interviews I do with people about their family history and I want to integrate old photos during the interview and then place the finished product on CD.
CAn this be accomplished? I know very little about this area but I have the desire to learn.
