A piece of advice. This forum has many thousands of visitors a week. It's not about fancy pants coding or other pretentious web whack-off - it's about communication and being a place where people can interact.

really Steve the SB Live! is not a quality card? I've seen you defend the Mac here from people who say it is not up to the 'quality' of a PC and here you are doing the same to the poor SB Live!! Your statement is simply wrong. It's an exceptional all round card for the price with more than adequate AD/DA converters for 98% of PC music makers. Most PC music makers don't even record through their cards anyway. You get what you pay for - you should have said - 'it's worth referencing it with some [more expensive] Audio cards'. now that would be a realistic statement.

Maybe that was a little anal although it's sometimes hard to include all the information to where I am coming from without texting absolutely everything.
I have looked into Audio cards and the drivers related to them and know a little. I have an excellent audio card (Korg1212, ADAT) but wouldn't wholly recommend it as it's software drivers are naff. I have spent some time getting it to work well with my system and it's troublesome. I have heard the same with the SB live.
There is always a problem with answering questions on a technical forum. You can piss everyone off or just a few as opinions vary. Recommending an SB live to someone that just wants a decent upgrade from their stock soundcard may seem good advice but to others, it's not going far enough towards true audio fidelity. I tend to egg people towards spending money on a clear and clean signal path, simplicity. From what I have read, the SB isn't so great at getting on with it and the quality is redundant if the thing doesn't work properly.
Lets face it, there are tons of audio cards out there these for very good money and to recommend a card with a joystick port and synthesis as an "Audio Card" seems wrong to me. I'm not saying that it wont work to the delight of the user but I still recommend a sensible audio only card...

joystick port?!! what's wrong with that
some people like to play games on their pc too u know! u are slagging a feature just because u don't see it as quite 'right'? rediculous as it works identically to a standard midi port. the SB Live! stores soundfonts! it has quality DSP FX! it has a very good onboard midi soundset! it has AD/DA converters which compare very favourablly to cards costing 300 pounds. not as clean but ofcourse not! many pro musicians use the SB Live! check their web site! 'What you've heard' doesn't really cut it Steve when u may be leading people away from a well priced card up to the job. I've heard of very little troble with the SBLive! and with the >HUGE< number of users out there with it OFCOURSE some peoples systems are gonna conflict!!!!

I don't expect people to take anything I say as gospel and therefore you may be taking me too seriously. All I do is come here and try to make some sense out of people's problems. I don't consider myself snobbish although I do have a dry way of writing that may be confusing.
I have never slagged the SB Live. I even said that I don't have 'anything' against it in the first post (which is all i said about it). I suppose I was just trying to egg the person on to 'getting a clean signal path'. Hi Fidelity doesn't include compromises like joystick ports as they have better things to spend their money on. It doesn't mean the rest of the card is crap, it just suggests something to me. For people trying to make a decent and clean signal into their computers, I still think a Audio only card is worth checking out. I never said it HAD to be bought. I don't doubt the SB live but have a look around, I think that was the point.
With regard to the A/D convertors, that's simply not true.

n some ways, the SB Live! card is good at what its designed for. Unfortunately, the accompanying software leaves a lot to be desired. A lot of people who use AMD processors have run into problems with the drivers, making the card unusable, myself included. Creative wouldn't help, so I junked it. Replaced it with the Audiologic Sonic Fury, and everything worked fine.
Steve's point (I think) is that it isn;t just the card itself, it's the rest of the bits that make up the package - drivers, support etc. Creative have had the market almost sown up for so long that they're in danger of becomming too complacent, and blaming problems on everyone else except themselves.

well that's good but you had a conflict on your system. Your system was as much 'at fault' as the SB cards drivers!

Weel if that was his point he didn't mention it! So if it was the best sounding card in the world but with poor suport you wouldn't use it? The truth is for hundreads of thousamds of people it is an excellent card many thousands of musicians use it in thier PC and the world is a better place for it! You are just feeling slightly superior right because you think you have a more 'pro' card than the majority. Man if you had 3 arms you'd say having two was outdated!
We need to state the truth on this forum otherwise it's useless propaganda. I'm not interested in imposing my views on others and think we should be clear and offer a balanced, fully explained view esp. if we are criticising a soundcard used by the majority of PC musicians!

I'm sorry, but it wasn't due to a conflict, and it wasn't my system that was at fault. Creative finally admitted that there were problems with some motherboards when the Live! was placed in one of the shared PCI slots.
As for a 'Pro' sound card, the Sonic Fury costs no more than the Live!
This was, in no way, an attempt to impose my views on anyone. Most people are quite capable of making their own mind up. I simply offered my own personal view of events. If what I posted is classed as propoganda, then your reply also falls under that category.

there is a distinction to be made between viewpoint + propaganda really isn't there. I did not use ANY propaganda in my last post! This would be a great place if we qualified everything we said with 'it's only my viewpoint' - not explicitly obviously as we would be re-reading that phrase again + again. I have NOT said any card is better/worse than any other I have just said that the SB Live! is a great card. That is true so it is NOT propaganda. Your card is great too I suspect but if I said it was pants that + gave some groundless reasons for that I'd be a propagandist!

it you convert to wav then burn it on to a cd you can listen to it on a regular cd player,
but make sure you burn it on a cd-r cd. a audio cd player will not read cd-rw cd's.
