you wont get any help on this here..

seen many postings regarding requests for software that converts Real Media to other formats but no one seems to know. The one that was available eg ra2wav seems to have become obsolete (and if you can get hold of it.. it doesnt work completely with the newer real media files).

good luck anyway !!

M3u

ok.. this question is tired, I know. But I really need to know how to convert M3U into Mp3 it's killing me!!
please please please help!

Reverse Reverb

Somebody knows when I can download a Reverse Reverb Plug-in for Cubase, WaveLab, SoundForge, or others?
Or a full program for this effect?
Or something like this.

That depends

Reverse reverb used to be done by reversing a reel to reel (or any tape really) and then routing the desired channel through a reverb and recording the effect on another track. When the tape was back the right way around, you get a reverse reverb that starts "before" the actual reverbed sound. Modern methods changed this by playing a reverb in reverse volume "after" the sound itself. You have to realise that this creates two different effects. The Tape one is my favourite but can be more work to acheive.

Reverse reverb is often offered in it's modern state on reverb pluggins and FX within an Audio editor and i'm suprise the programs you have don't offer this. If you can reverse the wave files that you want to process and then reverb that, you might be able to delete all information before the effect takes place and then play that back in a multitrack environment. I don't know your software as I use a Macintosh and can't help further...

Cheers

Steve

Re: That depends

Thanks for the info.
I have Cubase 5.0
WaveLab 3.0
SoundForge 4.5
All for PC.
I search inside this programs and his respective CD, and i found nothing about reverse reverb.
You know if inside this programs exist this effect?
Sorry for my not perfect english!
Thanks again

cakewalk home studio

Would Cakewalk Home Studio we suitable for use by a relative novice on computor music.I can read and sing
music but feel I would need a really good user manuel.
Any comments very much appreciated. Many TKS in advance.

Re: cakewalk home studio

Hi James,

Just to be safe, you should stop by the Cakewalk web site (www.cakewalk.com) and download the free demo of Home Studio. That way you can try the software before you buy it.

Best,
Scott

Music on a Laptop?

Hi

I want to create audio/midi music on a laptop computer! Apart from meeting the min sys requirements of the software programs I'll use are there any other considerations I should take into account before selecting a Laptop? Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

I wouldn't recommend a Laptop, because you cannot put a MIDI cable through it, meaning you can't play a Keyboard or synth into the laptop - but you can with a conputer

: I've had the uw500 for about a week and it is simply awesome for the money! Works great with any laptop that has a USB. Without a good tone generator you'll have to have a really good sound card though. But with a good tone generator you can use it as a hard disk recorder as well as a midi-interface for use in live performance.

Re: Music on a Laptop?

Of course You can!!!

A laptop is just as good in use with midi and audio as a desktop computer, exept from the missing PCI slots ans the space available. But even there You find PCMCIA pocket solutions or interfaces that connect with the usb port of the laptop in order to play midi instruments through an external midi keyboard. A good solution would be a virtual synthesizer: its small and it depends only on the system's processing power: check native or emagic virtual systems. They can do sampling, emulate synthesizers and work great with sequenzers such as logic or cubase. the only thing You will have to keep an eye on it is the time the system needs to process external trigger signals. Sometimes the response is quite slow, midi data is processed so slowly, that you cant play in realtime. Thats shit. Just check if Your systems supports ASIO driver standards. There must be some preferencies where you can set the latencity time-out near zero, so realtime is again possible

Consistant sound levels on MP3's

How can I change the sound levels on existing mp3's so when I burn the songs on to a CD all the songs have a consistant sound volume.

Normalising

Normalising is the process of adjusting the level of Audio, just below the point of digital distortion and should be tried. Most audio editors will do this, have a dig around the file area on this site. Apply it to all the MP3's and see what I mean...

Cheers

Steve...

Re: Consistant sound levels on MP3's

If your burning software doesn't let you do this then get some that does. Try www.sonicspot.com for more advanced burning programs.

I need an editor that will allow me to break up long tracked mp3

Hey, anyone out there tell me where to get an editor or whatever they might be called. I need an editor that will allow me to break up long tracks/mp3s so that i can change them and put them on a cd. any info i would REALLY appreciate. Also where do i find it?

no probs

The best site in the world (probablly) for all things musical and softwareable is www.sonicspot.com

If u can't get an mp3 'audio editor' then get an audio file converter. 'cdex' is free and great to convert the mp3's to .wav. The .wav files are the standard for audio editors. 'Sampled' is the best free audio editor.

great site

http://www.listen.to/cooltechno

Re: great site

Guys,

What's the big deal? This is music, not political economy. Mellow out a bit will ya. We're here for a good time. By the way the cooltechno artist has made over 900$ at mp3.com. Not a bad effort.

Yeah Chilll

I think enough has been said on the Mr. Angry side of things but I do like the general feeling of the conversation although I don't know if SMM will be enjoying it much. Tone it down I recon...

Funny thing though, he has made nearly a $1000. I suppose that concures with the view that people like to listen to simple computer music that they have heard before probably because the music industry psychologists have more of a hold on use than they should. They've taken over and govern what we listen to see we are easy meat when it comes to feeding time... Turn on the radio, what a variety?? I don't think so...

Experiment:

Put a MacDonalds next to a Health food eatery selling nice healthy and tasty hot food. Give it six months and the health food is gone... Is that because people know what is good for the body and soul or because they like prefer to compromise health for the salty rubbish they feed you at the oversized hamburger joint. I don't know the answer but I do know they went in the wrong shop.

To do with music? no but an analogy just the same

;0}

SteveR

Re: How to make $1000

: Funny thing though, he has made nearly a $1000

: Experiment:

Here's the experiment I would suggest:

1. Make up a song and convert to MP3

2. Upload to a 'pay for play' site like mp3.com

3. Start a controversy in discussion forums like this one (maybe even post the first few complaints yourself)

4. Sit back and collect the checks as everyone downloads your song to see what all the fuss is about :)

Alf.

Can't disagree with that...

Hehe...I suspect your quite right Alf. Sadly, that's the sort of thing that works. The whole system is screwed and there is little to no sense left. I do music for myself and don't worry too much about making money out of it.

Take it easy

Steve...R

Load of derivative pap...

Sorry, but how many times have those songs been done. Can't anyone think of anything new... it's been about ten years since someone started that sort of music and the bulk of it hasn't changed a bit. Just goes to show how uncreative the so called creative really are... I bet if your type had to write something in 5/4 you wouldn't know what I was taking about would you...?

Load of tosh...

You are wrong

You are wrong and obviously a bit of an idiot aren't you?

I'm sure this guys work is not a copy of, but a variation on, an established style - just as anything YOU do is my friend. 5/4 has been done before so a piece to that tempo is derivative? NO! Everyone has their own unique experience of music and just because familiarity with a particular style has clearly left YOU bored with it does not mean that style is to be abandoned by everyone else you arrogant little shit.

controversial, hooorah!

I had a listen to the music to see what the conversation is all about and for what it's worth, here's my opinion.

For starters, I will say that most people have a right to do what they want with music but when presented to the Gen Pub, it's then like fame, and is up for fiece critisism from afar, live with it or don't do it. I think this is a good thing for the creator as it allows them to receive honest opinions from listeners that don't care if you live or die. If I was to play something to my mother, she would say something like, "that's nice dear", thanks mum! but I get the feeling that it may not be nice but she's being kind. I personally need that hard edge to progress...

I will have to lean though towards the Angry post of Rank Amateur due to the fact that his points are hitting the nail on the head about the state of post second world war music. This sort of music is fine if you like that sort of thing, but the reality of the music industry is, that they will support the type of music that is easy and cheap to make and plaster it with image and sell it at a unreasonably high price to the detriment of people that are far beyond that level.

I suspect RA has been working hard at making music for many years and I suppose he feel he is qualified to look down on the simplicity of the construction and absense of original feel and grace, and I can't help but agree that this is a direct copy of a now boring format and represents nothing but average technical ability. I've seen people make music like that and it qualifies as the sort of thing you may do when you first start off in the computer music world which is great but so many people get stuck there and never learn the next stage. Therefore I would encourage the writer to be more interesting and look for new and interesting rythmns and ideas to move into the real creators world. If someone wants to listen to this music and then listen to the first Leftfield album, they will realize what a difference there is in one or two NON musicians with a computer and a bit of spare time. That is computer music of quality and feel WITHIN the bounds of computer music (and I bet THEY wouldn't go near Acid or FruityLoops....hehehe...) Listen to your music, think about it and don't be boring and TOO derivitive...

Best wishes and chill out...

Steve...

p.s. 4/4 is drastically over used and IS boring compared to mixing 6/4 with 4/4 and a bit of 5/4. It's easy once you try and takes away the monotony of having to hear the same crap on the radio all the time... Try a 3/4 verse and a 5/4 chorus. It'll spin you out at first but you will thank me when the song is making sense....

Re: controversial, hooorah!

you are a funny guy Steve! Your mum's criticism (note spelling please - critic, hence criticism OK?) supplies that 'hard edge' which keeps your music in top form?!! Well honesty is a virtue but there are certain things which are better left unsaid!

Steve you do offer the artist some positive criticism which is generous on your part and will be greatly recieved nodoubt but you still fall into the trap of thinking your taste is more important than someone elses! This is the height of arrogance and something you should put a stop to if you are to progress as a human being. Music is so special and important no matter what 'level' it or the listener is percieved to be at and musicians and their art deserve respect. Do you condem the child for poor use of grammar? No, you kindly/gently inform them of the correct path so that they may learn themselves and then improve their use of language.

Sometimes we people play a very silly game. It's called 'I am BETTER than you beacause I know something which you don't or I am more capable at something than you are' It is not the way forward and infact leads to the stagnation or holding onto of musical styles/the secure past/my little secret if you look at it. We are bigger and better than that, all of us

SteveR henceforth...

I can't help agree but don't at any point get the idea that I think my taste in music is Better than anyone elses, I wouldn't be that stupid. I have continued to progress through my life and take on more and more of what makes me and others tick...

I would never critisise others that have had a less privileged background from me but you have to understand that, using your own analogy, a child with a poor use of grammer is not likely to make a fuss about something they had written (a story say...) and post it around for all to read when that story has been written similarly.. SOOOO many times before and not expect a reaction from people that know companies will sell that sort of story to the detriment of other great and talented writers without it cheesing those writers off. I suspect that is why the original post had so much anger in it and although it's not usually my way of doing things, I can appreciate the passion from others that feel so strongly about their art. Although I would congratulate that person on their creation (for creations sake alone), I would be edging them on to do 'something' with their minds other than copy the minds of others, that is my point and nothing else. I listen to classical music from time to time but find that most of it is so similar (and a lot of the composers are too boring for their own good) that I find myself looking for something new. I suspect the reason it is so hard to find a band that REALLY REALLY comes from the heart is because people are too tied up in the financial side of the music and wont realize that doing it for themselves, expressing themselves from within, brings a better quality sound. I just think the music he has made is a cop out and he should look further within for the benefit of variety for ALL of us and not just the 160bpm boys and girls. Nice to see you around the site as much as you are, seem to have been answering most of the questions on the forum in the absence of all the knowledgables.

CYa!

SteveR

Re: SteveR henceforth...

hello SteveR!!

sorry - I didn't realise posting as 'steve' here would cause confusion but it seems to have! If u wan't u can go back to 'Steve' and I'll go 'stevo'?!!

OK I have problems still with your views -

'I just think the music he has made is a cop out and he should look further within'

What's wrong with this is that you are still insisting on having higher or 'better' indeed tastes than 'cooltechno'. You really are contradicting yourself here as just before you passed judgement on this guys taste and sincerity ('should look further within') you said you do NOT 'think my taste in music is Better than anyone elses'!!! You clearly do! And this is wrong because you are not more important in any way than cooltechno and your views about music are in no way superior to his or anybody elses.
You're not atall different from most of us in this way because we all think ourselves better than each other don't we? We should be honest when we can. In this case RANK has explicitly expressed all of our secret feelings about music/art/what is special hasn't he? 'I experience it and understand it more than you so you are a fool'. Ah but who is the 'fool'? - who is putting on a pretence of deep understanding for the sake of their own selfimportance?

None of us are perfect but I think hysterical outbursts like RANK AMATEUR's should be explained away as nothing more than a selfish rant far removed from the reality of the matter. Music is for everyone I think you'd agree but remember that this 'heart' you mention is relative. I know some 'soulful' music made from the 'heart' makes me want to vomit. OK so that is my view of it but does my view make the music worthless? Or is this music as valid as any other musical creation especially to thoses who have created it and who are deeply inspired while listening to it?.

Maybe we have different view about the author of this music? I haven't listened yet but maybe you think the music is a cheap exploitative copy? Maybe so and I guess that would be wrong. But this imitation rarely leads to good tunes. Maybe the guy puts his heart + soul into it and is and will continue to be greatly inspired by his creations? Why should we attempt to convince him that what he is doing is inferior? Because we think we now better??? The height of arrogance - I can't think of anything more wrong and destructive in this world than this attitude of 'I am Right and You are Wrong'

mmm maybe I am suffering from this self imposed illusion right now........? I can only attempt to justify my beliefs hereby thinking what I have said through and concluding that what I've said is logical and there is evidence to support it - I'll have to think a bit more on this one.

steve

PS Alf, I am not 'cooltechno' and I'm not his friend either;)

Bollocks

Established style, bollocks... If the music world was removed of boring little cut and paste ripp off merchants then you would see a bunch of repressed but excellent musicians emerging from the wings. There is nothing hard in making music like that other than conquering the surface of musically deprived programs like Acid and Fruity loops. I bet you a weeks wages that MOST of those users don't even know how to use their more than likely stolen software let alone anything about musical theory or tempo changes. They probably don't even know what the difference in feeling between a Cmajor and Cmajor 7th. I have been in this industry for 20 years and have watched people pretending that they are creators of interesting music when all they are doing is copying outdated styles that are created by a computer. Some computer programs are probably better at making music than that without the input from a human being. 4/4 is all they know, set at the same tempo, step time sequenced from start to finish. Very uninspiring, talentless and boring...

My sisters 10 year old is into music which is great, he is doing the same as this bloke but he's 10. He's learning the guitar and the keyboards and will be producing more interesting and emotional music than most of the sad pretenders that visit this site by the time he is twelve. Play the stupid little bubblegum tunes to the kids but don't expect the real songwriters and musicians to be impressed because we are not... Roll on the internet musical revolution and put the falsies up against the wall.

RA...

you are a big W@#&£R

I'm afraid you are lost and far less sensitive to music than you pretend to be.

The difference in 'feeling' between a major and minor chord is relative to the listener (and obviously it's environment). There is, as I say, no SET 'difference' as you imply - neither the world nor music revolves around YOUR condition or sentiment. Do you understand this fundamentally? It is important in life to know that neither you nor me are special in the slightest.

This mans work you arrogantly write off may represent to him a most intense experience of music. YOU have made a problem out of the fact that you do not recognise something which this other fella clearly does. He MAY have the same conception of your 'greatest' compositions but would probablly keep his thoughts to himself rather than embaress himself with such a petty outburst
which clearly originates in your own insecurity and frustration with your own musical creations.
If you were secure in yourself you would not be such an arrogant little shit. You have much to learn yet such little time so make the most of my generous guidance.

steve

Kiddies...

Your a confused little music industry supporting runt of the litter that wouldn't know a Beethoven from Spice Girl. Listen to your rubbish music but don't forget to leave some space for the real men, but that's not possible is it????? it's all been taken up by shite' for the sake of filthy lucre

Go to bed, it's past 7pm

RA

Re: Kiddies...

am confused indeed - as is everyman/woman so there's nothing to be ashamed about in that is there RANK?

Now it's clear you haven't paid a bit of attention to my last message have you? Lessons sometimes are learnt the hard way and you my friend desperately need to loosen up - realise that there is room enough in this world for everyone and that any persons outlook is equally as valid as anybody elses.

If you feel so strongly about 'poor' music I suggest you may have greater success in reducing it occurrance in this world by becoming a little more sensetive to the reasons why this music exists? Do you know WHY this music you hate exists? I mean REALLY why? If u did you would be a different person. Moan if u want fella. There are so many unhappy people out there and you want to belittle a musician creating something that makes him (and clearly many others) more fufilled human beings?

searching for synthesiser/ wav tool

Hello-this is the first time I,ve ever posted on the internet so don't laugh, please make it successful for me!
I am recent to computers and music and at the moment use Q-base,sound forge and sound fonts. However although that I find Sforge great and Sfonts a good means of playing the wavs on the keyboard without delay
I now need a tool to synthesise my wavs samples to change them dramatically. Sforge has a lot of tools for
editing and changing your samples but I need somthing similar in use, loading wavs and saving as wavs, that can also synthesise the wav dramatically and that is as user freindly as Sforge. Also while I'm on, do you know of a tool that when recording a vinyl LP into Sforge as a wav will the insert makers for the tracks, I do not think Sforge will do this. Hope I not been to long winded. Thanks. Allan.

try the Fruit!

A little long Allan but you are forgiven!

What I suggest you try your .wavs in is 'FruityLoops'. With this tool u can really warp them to infinity in a 'live' environment and it's a joy to use. Get the demo and try. You will find many other programs to try at www.sonicspot.com - a goldmine!

HELP

Will you please tell me how to put music onto my website Step-by-Step.

Re: HELP

Well that depends on your set up and as I'm not psychic (!) I wouldn't like to suggest a step by step approach. However a few tips-

.wav files are way too big to upload in bulk so steer clear unless very small bits of audio are used

mp3's are better because they are smaller in size

midi files are THE best if they are suitable that is? They are so small that a whole song will take seconds for u to upload and for your viewers to download. They can be made to play automatically when someone opens your pages and provide a nice 'backdrop' to a site.

However if it's your own songs you want to offer as downloads then use mp3. You need an mp3 converter to turn .wav's into mp3's. Try www.sonicspot.com for a free converter.

Now you should be able to upload the song files just like any other file (jpeg/gif etc) to your server. Just put a text link on your page to the song file just as you would use any other link. Clicking on this link should start the downloading of the song automatically but I've not done it myself!

best of luck

steve

Transposing instruments

How do you input written music at a concert pitch and score it so it can be played by a trumpet in Bb??

Re: Transposing instruments

Enter your score by playing it in or writing it in and then transpose that track only down by one semitone:

crystal ball!

: How do you input written music at a concert pitch and score it so it can be played by a trumpet in Bb??

It depends on your set up and I'm sure no one here is pychic!

If you have a sequencer there will nodoubt be a 'transpose' facility somewhere. In mine it's a little box next to each channel on the mixing desk. It will transpose up or down an octave max via each semi tone inbetween obviously.

sorry

sorry I may have misunderstood I think - maybe u have no set up yet?

Do you want to input via a scanner and have the program print out a trumpet score?? It may be possible - try www.sonicspot.com and click 'Notation' under 'Music' in the 'Software Categories box'.
