Registering Vision DSP 4.5.1

: well i'll send you a registration number if you can help me to register vision dsp 4.5......

It is a real bitch without a key disk -----for one thing each machine will have a different challenge code; which then has to have the response given by Gibson (good luck trying to get them to support you as well. Ive been trying to get a key disk for 4 months --no help--I think Gibson is just gonna let it die.

By the way I could use the registration to MACAST since those German clowns went and did away with the MacAmp beta.
Kjnda pisses me off knowin' you can get WinAmp for free--there just trying to screw Mac users I guess--anyway I would really appreciate it----How bout the no.s for Peak 2.04 LE?

GAME & AUDIO CD DUPILICATION

Is it possible to duplicate cd-rom/playstat/dvd/audio
cds to a blank cd via one cd-r/rw drive? I heard it was, but for me it has not proven so. I can record an
entire Audio CD (1 track @ a time-uhhh!) But have made
countless frustrating attempts to complete mixed cds
(songs from 2 or more cds) and any of the others
mentioned. Are 2 CD drives (ROM & CR-R/RW) absolutely
necc. to duplicate what I want? Is it my hard drive
memory size (10 gig)? My cd-creator program(Adaptec easy-cd...)? Conflicting software?
Or am I an idiot. What gives??? I have limited literature...from program's software or print?
Please help. Thanks for the time.

There is a program called Streambox Ripper. It currently has a court injunction against it by Real Audio preventing its distribution.

AWE64 Gold Card:Loss of SoundFonts from 'User ' section of AWE C

The AWE64 and software has worked perfectly until recently. The User Synth was lost from the card's 'Synth' some months ago and following reinstalling,it was available on the card, but went again (I could not identify a specific action that caused it to be lost). However I have loaded GS as the 'Synth'. The GS remains on the card without a problem which leaves about 8MB - plenty left for SoundFonts on the 'User' AWE Control. I have problems with the AWE Control. When SoundFonts are loaded onto the 'User' Bank they do not remain in the bank once the computer is shutdown. They stay there if I reboot but not if there is a complete shut down. Any observations would be appreciated.

You should load the 'user synth'-SoundFont not as an extra soundbank on top of your GS-synth, but select 'user synth' instead as default synth.
That way your 'user synth' will be loaded after shut-down of your computer..
Make life easy on yourself and download AWE-toy from this site, it's the best freeware bank-manager for your AWE :)

Dear Alex,
I think what you want to do is not a software problem. You need to be able so send digital information ( Mpeg files) to the digital in of your portable Mpeg-player, and the way to do that is by a digital (in and) out on your computer. Therefore you might have to add a Spiff card to a PCI-slot in order to make a digital transfer from one to another. Hope this information is usefull to you.
Regards from Belgium.
Hano
I don't think it's a software problem.

i have a mp3 player but i dont know how to download songs to it

Re: Hey i'm looking for an mp3 program that can transfer songs t

Alex-
I don't know if you still haven't gotten your RIO500 to work, but I recently bought one and had a few problems before getting it to work. If you tell me what kind of problem(s) you are experiencing, I might be able to tell you what I did to get mine to work. You said the software doesn't work, does it tell you that it can't find any portable devices or does the software cause the machine to lock up or what? Let me know, I'll tell you what I did to get it to work. Good luck

DAW Decisions

Hello,
I have been recording for over fifteen years. I started with a simple 2-track Teac reel to reel and have worked my way up to an all digital 24 track MDM system. Recently, I have decided to abandon recording and old editing processes in favor of using a DAW. I will still keep the MDM's to archive my recordings.
I have done some research regarding DAW's. However, I find that I must rely on others for their expertise to assist me in my decisions.
Which brings me to ask thoughts on the following.
I want to have a PC loaded with Cubase VST/24 (producer pac). The interface I am thinking of would be the MOTU 2408.
The PC shall have a Pentium III processor (500 Mhz or more). It will also have two drives (each over 10G). One drive will be used to store programs and the other to store music files. I was considering having everything connected using SCSI (which, of course, all peripherals would have to be SCSI compatable). It shall have a CD-R as well.
Also, I have also heard of BEOS. Has anyone had the experience of using this operating system? It seems to be designed with audio in mind.
Are there any compatability problems? What other factors must I consider?
I'm sorry. I've run out of time right now. MANY QUESTIONS-NO TIME.
I thank you for yours (time).

Computer Products

Computer Products
The new computer monitors with the flat screens are amazing. The amount of space that I have
on my desk is limited. I would love to buy a large monitor, but can’t deal with the size of the
machine. Needless to say, I was very disappointed to learn of the incredibly high price of the flat
screen monitors. Does anyone have a realistic idea as to when flat screen manufacturers will be
able to produce less expensive machines? I have not been too successful finding the information
online. I have however discovered a great place to buy hardware and software by joining others
in group buys. I happen to like Volumebuy.com. Please respond with any news.

PC Authentication Comes To Comdex
At a recent Comdex convention, vendors unveiled new products designed to authenticate PC
users and protect data. One particular company leading the way in this new field is SAFlink Corp,
who is using retinal scanning, voice, face and fingerprint technology. Companies who specialize
in this new type of security are combining scanning technology with a software platform. Does
anyone know how long it will be before this expensive technology will be reasonably priced for the
consumer market? If so, does anyone have any idea who will make it? On a side note, I do
recommend a visit to http://www.volumebuy.com/vbuy_site/default_pro3.asp. This is a group buying website with many goods and
services.

Smart Cards
Despite a valiant effort in the past, smart cards have not caught on in the United States, as they
have in Europe. Now however, with the invention of a new type of smart card, the backing of
American Express and Microsoft and some marketing, the concept might just work. Smart Cards
are thumbnail-sized chips that can be encoded with almost any type of information from bank
account files to personal health facts such as allergies and blood type. These chips may be
placed in such places as your drivers license. This leads me to ask what happens if you lose your
smart card. If you lose your credit card, you can cancel it with modest ease. If however you lost
your smart card what would happen? You can’t easily reissue a social security number. As it
relates to smart things, I found a smart way to shop- group buying.
I recommend http://www.volumebuy.com/vbuy_site/default_pro3.asp. Check it out.

Palm-branded Products
I read about 3Com’s new plan to expand into the accessory market by developing Palm-branded
products. Licensing of Palm software is also in the works. I recall hearing that new software is
being developed to allow devices running Palm OS the ability to synchronize directly with the
server that holds a company's Microsoft Exchange data, or Lotus Notes. Has anyone else heard
anything specific about this? I’d be curious to learn more. As it relates to these electronic devices,
I have recently discovered a new way to shop- buyer pooling. I recommend checking out
http://www.volumebuy.com/vbuy_site/default_pro3.asp.

Trusted Computing Platform Alliance
Many of my friends are talking about IBM and how they are determined to increase Internet
security by forming the Trusted Computing Platform Alliance with PC makers such as Compaq
and Hewlett-Packard, software maker Microsoft, and semiconductor maker Intel. But what does
all this mean? How can personal computing become more secure? This venture sounds like a
great way to develop a universal security standard for equipment and software. To what degree
will this new group share their ideas on increasing security and not keeping new technology
discoveries to themselves? Does anyone know anything about the Trusted Computing Platform
Alliance? As it relates to forming alliances- what do you all think about group buying. I recently
viewed http://www.volumebuy.com/vbuy_site/default_pro3.asp and am impressed. I like how group buying can be applied to so many
industries- check it out.

Online Wallet Service
I rather enjoy saving time by making purchases online. I do however hate having to constantly re-
enter all my personal information every time I’m interested in making a purchase (entering my
credit card and address). Microsoft has developed for launch its own online wallet service for
MSN Passport. Companies such as Barnes & Noble and Costco are expected to use the
technology. While I have not yet tried it, Passport supposedly allows users to sign in once,
access their information and then share it with others (other sites). Can anyone explain the
security risks associated with keeping your information stored online? With regards to shopping
online, I do recommend http://www.volumebuy.com/vbuy_site/default_pro3.asp- a group buying site. And the checkout process is rather
easy!

Just How Safe Is Aol?
With the recent password thefts occurring on America Online, users are beginning to question the
service’s security features. Malicious email was sent from Opera Mail, a free Web service to AOL
users. Random AOL users would find upon opening their mail that they would not be receiving
the message they had hoped for. Instead, they would be informed that their password (which
would pop up in the email) was just stolen. In my view, it seems that those who know how to
manipulate the system will simply manipulate the “to” field in the email you receive to make you
believe it’s one of your friends. Which leads me to ask, will we ever be free from viruses? On a
side note, I do recommend http://www.volumebuy.com/vbuy_site/default_pro3.asp- a group buying site I found online. Perhaps we could
all pool together to get some Norton Anti-virus!

Affordable Computers
The number of people who have purchased a computer has grown at an astronomical rate the
last few years alone. Perhaps more impressive however is how remarkably affordable these
machines have become. Compaq for example is now offering what’s being called the Deskpro
computer, which is expected to be priced at the low price of $819. Will prices drop any lower?
Perhaps more important, what kind of parts are we getting for that cheap a price? In another
finding, I recommend http://www.volumebuy.com/vbuy_site/default_pro3.asp. This is a group buying site that sells all kinds of goods and
services from hardware and software, to discounted gasoline and travel.

E-Mail In Your Pocket
I really am happy that you can finally have wireless messaging and wired e-mail connectivity in
one device. Next year, VTech will release a device that will allow you to send and receive e-mail
via a traditional connection and receive (not send) wireless pages. Seems like a neat new toy.
Has anyone heard about anything like this? As it relates to other neat things, I do recommend
one of my recent finds- http://www.volumebuy.com/vbuy_site/default_pro3.asp. A group buying website filled with all kinds of goods and
services.

Software
I was recently on the web and caught an article about a new way to buy goods and services
online- group buying. The concept is rather interesting. Group buyers together into buying pools
to purchase goods and services. One particular site that does this is Volumebuy.com. I’m well
aware of the existing buying models such as the auctions, but have my qualms about it. I would
be most interested in hearing about anyone’s experience with group buying- anyone who would
like to share?

New Software Website
In searching the web, I found a new site that sells such products as Norton Antivirus at great
prices by pooling people together into buying pools. I’m curious to know if anyone else has ever
taken part in this type of aggregate buying. I happened to look at
http://www.volumebuy.com/vbuy_site/default_pro3.asp and was impressed with the wide variety of goods and services offered.

Does anyone have any idea how to properly adjust the settings on a computer monitor? The
directions supplied with my monitor are not at all clear and do not sufficiently explain how to set
the adjustments properly. I was wondering if there are any sites online that suggest tips on
adjusting such things as contrast and the black lines that go around the ends of the screen.
Anyone have any suggestions? Relating to hardware, I would like to recommend a great site-
http://www.volumebuy.com/vbuy_site/default_pro3.asp. This site groups people together into buying pools. Interesting concept.

Free Palm Software
It seems as though more and more of us are purchasing personal digital assistants, or PDA’s for
short. I find myself constantly searching for places that I can download PDA software for free. Of
all the software I have loaded on my own PDA (Palm V), two of my favorite programs include:
LauncherIlll and AportisDoc Reader. Launcherlll allows you to group applications into tabs,
making programs easier to launch. The tabs can be organized any way you like and allows you to
drag and drop programs between them. The second piece of software I recommend is called
AportisDoc Reader. This document reader gives you the ability to view most reference files with
ease. I find most of what I want now online. I came across one new site that looks rather
interesting. It’s http://www.volumebuy.com/vbuy_site/default_pro3.asp, I suggest taking a look.

Inexpensive Digital Camera
If you’ve ever wanted to buy a digital camera, but did not want to spend a lot of money, then I
suggest checking out the Agfa ePhoto 780c. I believe they go for about $170. This camera offers
a great way to inexpensively post pictures on the web, or email pictures to your friends. It has
350,000 pixel sensor (interpolates up to 1024x768) and has a fixed focal length equivalent to
50mm (50mm is the best choice for a fixed length). I bought mine in a retail store, but I’m sure
they exist online. On a separate note, I found a neat, money saving site
that http://www.volumebuy.com/vbuy_site/default_pro3.asp is worth checking out.

Making Web Sites Easier to Manage
Most of us, especially those inexperienced with shopping online, might find that navigating certain
websites are unnecessarily challenging. I often find myself searching through many pages within
a website to find what I am after. How can this issue be more easily resolved? I only hope that
solutions are proposed at next week’s Internet World conference in New York. Rumor has it that
InterWorld Corp., Intershop Communications Inc. and others are due to unveil new application
suites specifically designed to make it easier for IT managers to develop a more manageable
website. In the interim, I am constantly looking for easy to navigate, cool sites. This week I found
http://www.volumebuy.com/vbuy_site/default_pro3.asp. A great site that brings people together into buying groups.

Cyber Rules
Thought I’d share a great book that I just finished reading. The book is called Cyber Rules by
Thomas Siebel. Regardless of what you sell, this book defines the dos and don’t s of moving a
portion of, or all your business online. As I see more and more users making purchases online, I
understand the need for managers read these types of books. My Internet recommendation for
the week is http://www.volumebuy.com/vbuy_site/default_pro3.asp, a neat site where you can buy many goods and services at low
prices, by joining buying pools. I suggest taking a look at it.

Amazon’s New Anywhere Program
Now consumers can shop and check online auctions from wireless devices. With Amazon’s
introduction of the ‘Anywhere Program,’ users have access to one-click shopping and product
searching. The program is compatible for use with 3Com Corp’s Palm VII. Users need only
download an application from www.palm.net or from www.amazon.com/anywhere. I found an
interesting site that sells electronics, travel and wireless goods and services at really good prices.
My site of the week is http://www.volumebuy.com/vbuy_site/default_pro3.asp. This site pools buyers after the same goods and
services together into buying pools. Check it out.

Consumer Expectations in the Video Game Market Grow
Many years ago Nintendo captured the attention of gaming enthusiasts by bringing affordable
high quality video games to the consumer market. Today, it seems that a manufacturers’ ability to
sell a new video game system depends on the quality level of the graphics, the price of the unit,
cost of games and perhaps most important, the quality of the games themselves. Right now, I feel
that Sega’s Dreamcast is the best overall system on the market with 128 bit cd quality. Will the
release of Play Station II by Sony this February be able to compete? What can we expect two
years from now? By the way, I found a great new way to by my electronics online at
http://www.volumebuy.com/vbuy_site/default_pro3.asp. This site is cool because you get really low prices by joining others in
different types of buying pools.

MP3 Players
MP3s are by far one of the more awesome means created to listen to and store music. Now,
consumers can purchase portable MP3 players to listen to their MP3’s on the go. My personal
favorite machine is the jazPiper by RFC Distribution in Singapore. This machine has 32MB of
built-in storage (expandable to 64MB with the player's SmartMedia slot), voice recording and a
digital telephone book that allows storage of up to 250 names and numbers. I do most of my
shopping online at this great new site called http://www.volumebuy.com/vbuy_site/default_pro3.asp.
I suggest you check it out.

Buying a New Monitor
In this last week alone, I must have read about what seems like almost every new 21 inch monitor
ever made, and was still not convinced that the image quality I would get with a new 21 inch is as
good as lets say my old one- despite all the recent engineering changes in monitors. While I’m
not the most technologically savvy individual, I did learn that the quality of the Cathode Ray
Tubes in these larger monitors has significantly improved by all the manufacturers. In addition, I
found out from surfing the web that current monitors are using digital controls and onscreen
displays, which include adjustments for such things as pincushioning and trapezoidal distortion.
While I can’t say that I have any clue as to what this all means, I do know that I will be very
careful as to where and how spend my money. I found a great place to buy hardware online at
http://www.volumebuy.com/vbuy_site/default_pro3.asp. Unfortunately, they did not have as of yet the specific monitor I was after in their
product line. I did however really like the concept of group buying and hope to return to that site
later on.

The Smart Trash Can
I’ve seen some pretty interesting inventions, but this one clearly takes the cake. NCR Corp has
created a smart trash can that recognizes the type of waste you drop in as it hovers above the
bin. After identifying the objects contained in the bin, it separates the junk into one of four
compartments- bottles, paper and food are tucked away separately.
The bin is also capable of reading bar codes, and is able to tell its user what goods are routinely
disposed and in what quantities. The unit is not yet available for sale. On a side note, I found a
really great website this week at http://www.volumebuy.com/vbuy_site/default_pro3.asp. This site aggregates buyers together into
buying pools to purchase goods and services. I recommend checking it out.

Launch of Windows 2000
Rumor has it that Microsoft is scheduled to launch Windows 2000 around the second week of
February, 2000. International launch is said to occur at the same time. While Microsoft expects
Windows 2000 to do quite well in the marketplace, they concede that it will not match the
unbelievable sales of Windows ’95. How do you all think that the new windows will fare in the
marketplace? Windows 2000 has four features that stand out immediately. They include: the
ability to Internet able businesses, new found reliability, better manageability and its status as the
“best platform for new devices”- by whom I do not know! I certainly hope that Microsoft beta tests
Windows 2000 more than they did with Windows ’95. Has anyone had an opportunity to try it out?
Relating to software, I would like to recommend a great place to make purchases online. The site
is http://www.volumebuy.com/vbuy_site/default_pro3.asp. and is one I use often. Check it out.

Mac OS 9’s Incompatibility Issues
Mac OS 9 is soon to be released and already several third-party developers are finding
compatibility problems between their products and the operating system. From what I’ve seen on
the net, most people believe that the problems are with Adobe System Inc.’s popular Adobe Type
Manager and Adobe Type Reunion. Does anyone know anything specific about this? What
implications will this incompatibility issue have on print and design professionals? On a side note,
I came across a real interesting website at http://www.volumebuy.com/vbuy_site/default_pro3.asp. I suggest checking it out.

Apple’s Answer to Gaming
The new iMacs are said to have improved graphics, hardware, sound and performance, which in
my view is critical if you like to play games on your computer. Gaming on Macs however was not
always great. Apparently, I was not the only one who was upset with the graphics and sound
quality coming out of the older Macs. Now, with iMac’s new look, better performance and yes,
better graphics and sound, gaming is fun again. What do you all think about Mac’s attempt at
improving gaming? On a side note, I found a new way to shop online- its something called
aggregate buying. I recommend http://www.volumebuy.com/vbuy_site/default_pro3.asp and suggest you check it out.

Taiwan Earthquake Does Not Affect Dell
According to Dell Computer Corp. chairman Michael Dell last month’s earthquake in Taiwan,
which knocked out industrial production will not affect the company’s financial performance.
Taiwanese computer parts plants are said to be operational once more. If this information is true,
why then does it still take Dell so long to deliver orders? Is Dell truly back to business, or are they
incurring problems getting chips from overseas? Has anyone any idea as to what is going on? As
a side note, would like to share an interesting site I found recently.
It’s http://www.volumebuy.com/vbuy_site/default_pro3.asp.
I suggest checking it out.

The New iBook, is it Too “girly?”
While I have not yet seen a new iBook in person, I have read many reviews on it. It seems that
most of what has been said centers on form rather than function. When iBook was unveiled at
MacWorld this past July, some critics called it “girly.” I personally don’t quite see it. In fact, I
applaud Apple for using vivid color and design technique. What do you all think about the look of
the new iBook? Are the critics right? Does it look too feminine? On a side note, I came across a
new site this week that I happen to really like. The address is www.volumebuy.com, check it out.

Cookies
Everyday, I hear so much about these things on our computers called “cookies”, but can’t say I
know much if anything about them. Can anyone explain in simple terms what it is they do? To
quote something I found online “a cookie is a message given to a web browser by a web server.”
What kind of message are we talking about and why do they exist? . It seems as though nobody
likes them, but why? While I can’t share anything about cookies, I can share a neat site I found
and like. The address is http://www.volumebuy.com/vbuy_site/default_pro3.asp. I suggest taking a look.

Intel’s New 64-bit Chip
I’m thinking of purchasing one of Intel’s new 64-bit processor chips because all the technically
savvy people I know swear by it. Can anyone tell me what it is that’s so great about it? What will
64-bits actually do for me? As a side note, I found a new site that looks quite interesting. The site
is http://www.volumebuy.com/vbuy_site/default_pro3.asp. I recommend it.

The 700mhz AMD Chip
I’m quite curious to see if the 700mhz AMD chip will be reasonably priced. Does anyone have any
idea what it is expected to sell for? I’ve had AMD chips before and have never incurred any
problems using them, but would like to know specific reasons for staying with AMD and not
switching to the popular Pentium III- any ideas? I came across a new site that I would like to
recommend- Volumebuy.com. Check it out.
Army Websites Switch to Mac WebSTAR Server Software
I’m not partial to either Apple or Microsoft, but was happy to learn that Army websites would now
switch from NT, to Mac OS running WebSTAR server software. I’m glad to see Apple getting
some more business. Anyone have any idea why they believe that WebSTAR is more secure?
On a side note, I found a cool new Group Buying site at http://www.volumebuy.com/vbuy_site/default_pro3.asp . This is a really
neat way to make purchases online.

Why I like Apple's new iBook. The touchpad Apple claims is the best, and the keyboard isn't bad
either. Apple continues to innovate, leading the industry in more than just design. The iBook
includes a built-in antenna wrapped around the screen. You can easily add a $100 wireless
networking card and it is speedy wireless networking. What is your opinion? I was hoping to buy
it from http://www.volumebuy.com/vbuy_site/default_pro3.asp - new cool site that I like, but they don’t have it yet. Do you think that
group power buying will become a way to get products at good prices? Let me know what you
think.

E-commerce- Do We Need Rules?
Some e-commerce companies do not see the urgency for nailing down specific rules.
An industry group is trying to make electronic commerce safe for consumers. More than 200
members have agreed on an outline for regulating the Internet. Do you think that it is possible to
enforce? On another topic, I came across an interesting site – http://www.volumebuy.com/vbuy_site/default_pro3.asp. Sounds like
the way to go. Check it out.

What is future of AMD?
I found the lab results from *PC Magazine* to be quite interesting, perhaps even surprising. They
tested today's major processors (five in all) and awarded the performance crown to the new AMD
Athlon. Is this the end of Intel rule? On another subject, I came across an interesting site at
http://www.volumebuy.com/vbuy_site/default_pro3.asp. They pool people together to leverage the group purchase. It’s an
Interesting concept.

Software Languages
Java has become an essential technology for the growth of the
Internet and e-commerce, but it's too early to tell in what form
it will emerge. What is your point of view? On another subject, I came across an interesting site
at http://www.volumebuy.com/vbuy_site/default_pro3.asp. They pool people together to leverage the group purchase. Interesting
concept.

Microsoft software tricks
Vizact is the component of Microsoft Office that attacks interactivity, and it's Microsoft's proposal
of how active documents should be implemented. As you might expect, some features produce
glitzy, but distracting effects and some are quite useful. My personal favorite is Interactive Bullets,
a quick way to produce expanding/collapsing outlines on a Web page. You can also use the
same feature in your emails, Word documents and Excel spreadsheets. I think it's a very bad idea
to waste time creating interactive emails. What do you think? On a side note, I came across a
new web site at http://www.volumebuy.com/vbuy_site/default_pro3.asp. Very interesting.

Portal War
Excite's colorful and highly configurable personal page appears automatically when you go to
www.excite.com, unlike what happens at sites such as Yahoo! or Lycos where the site's main
page is different from your personal page. What is your preference – separate page or home
page that is your page? Let me know. On a side note, I came across an interesting site. It is new
way to do e-commerce. The name is http://www.volumebuy.com/vbuy_site/default_pro3.asp.

I'm predicting that DSL will win the fast-access fight. Seattle Times writer Peter Lewis just
documented his year with DSL. For the most part, he says he liked the speed and "always-on"
feature. But getting it up and running was full of adventures. A key problem is the perplexing
supply system. To solve it, contact your local Bell. If you need good long distance, I came a
cross new site – http://www.volumebuy.com/vbuy_site/default_pro3.asp. There offerings of Atcall, ILD and RSL as long distance are
very competitive.

I like good sound as much as anyone else, and that's why I bought an expensive home stereo.
The WOW technology added much more depth and height to my computer audio. This little
translucent blue box brings 3D and other sound enhancement technology right to your PC.
I knew that this would be something I had to have. In my search to buy it, found an interesting
site- http://www.volumebuy.com/vbuy_site/default_pro3.asp that have great prices for PC components. Unfortunately, they did not have
this item. Any suggestions on another place to look?

The news that Dell usurped Compaq as PC sales leader in the third quarter shouldn't surprise
anyone. Dell figured out the direct sales model early. And embraced the Internet early as well. It
also entered the business market at the right time, promising competitive pricing and above
average service. Compaq, in my view, still clings to the old retail model. Compaq can't have it
both ways and succeed; they have to choose a direction and go for it. By the way, direct sales
model looks like it finally has a competitor. It is group buying. I surfed the site Volumebuy.com.
They have a new method of making sales – group buying. It can take off fast I believe. What do
you think?

I want an all-in-one device that surfs the Net, works as a pager, keeps my calendar and lets me
do email from anywhere. Oh, and an inflatable full-sized keyboard would be nice, too. Too much
to ask? I think future cellular phones will do exactly that. By the way, if you need good long
distance, cellular or other stuff, I recommend visiting volumebuy.com. Good prices and an
interesting sales method – pools. At this site you join buying groups to get a lower price.

: The new computer monitors with the flat screens are amazing. The amount of space that I have
: on my desk is limited. I would love to buy a large monitor, but can’t deal with the size of the
: machine. Needless to say, I was very disappointed to learn of the incredibly high price of the flat
: screen monitors. Does anyone have a realistic idea as to when flat screen manufacturers will be
: able to produce less expensive machines? I have not been too successful finding the information
: online. I have however discovered a great place to buy hardware and software by joining others
: in group buys. I happen to like Volumebuy.com. Please respond with any news.

:
: PC Authentication Comes To Comdex
: At a recent Comdex convention, vendors unveiled new products designed to authenticate PC
: users and protect data. One particular company leading the way in this new field is SAFlink Corp,
: who is using retinal scanning, voice, face and fingerprint technology. Companies who specialize
: in this new type of security are combining scanning technology with a software platform. Does
: anyone know how long it will be before this expensive technology will be reasonably priced for the
: consumer market? If so, does anyone have any idea who will make it? On a side note, I do
: recommend a visit to http://www.volumebuy.com/vbuy_site/default_pro3.asp. This is a group buying website with many goods and
: services.

:
: Smart Cards
: Despite a valiant effort in the past, smart cards have not caught on in the United States, as they
: have in Europe. Now however, with the invention of a new type of smart card, the backing of
: American Express and Microsoft and some marketing, the concept might just work. Smart Cards
: are thumbnail-sized chips that can be encoded with almost any type of information from bank
: account files to personal health facts such as allergies and blood type. These chips may be
: placed in such places as your drivers license. This leads me to ask what happens if you lose your
: smart card. If you lose your credit card, you can cancel it with modest ease. If however you lost
: your smart card what would happen? You can’t easily reissue a social security number. As it
: relates to smart things, I found a smart way to shop- group buying.
: I recommend http://www.volumebuy.com/vbuy_site/default_pro3.asp. Check it out.

: Palm-branded Products
: I read about 3Com’s new plan to expand into the accessory market by developing Palm-branded
: products. Licensing of Palm software is also in the works. I recall hearing that new software is
: being developed to allow devices running Palm OS the ability to synchronize directly with the
: server that holds a company's Microsoft Exchange data, or Lotus Notes. Has anyone else heard
: anything specific about this? I’d be curious to learn more. As it relates to these electronic devices,
: I have recently discovered a new way to shop- buyer pooling. I recommend checking out
: http://www.volumebuy.com/vbuy_site/default_pro3.asp.

: Trusted Computing Platform Alliance
: Many of my friends are talking about IBM and how they are determined to increase Internet
: security by forming the Trusted Computing Platform Alliance with PC makers such as Compaq
: and Hewlett-Packard, software maker Microsoft, and semiconductor maker Intel. But what does
: all this mean? How can personal computing become more secure? This venture sounds like a
: great way to develop a universal security standard for equipment and software. To what degree
: will this new group share their ideas on increasing security and not keeping new technology
: discoveries to themselves? Does anyone know anything about the Trusted Computing Platform
: Alliance? As it relates to forming alliances- what do you all think about group buying. I recently
: viewed http://www.volumebuy.com/vbuy_site/default_pro3.asp and am impressed. I like how group buying can be applied to so many
: industries- check it out.

: Online Wallet Service
: I rather enjoy saving time by making purchases online. I do however hate having to constantly re-
: enter all my personal information every time I’m interested in making a purchase (entering my
: credit card and address). Microsoft has developed for launch its own online wallet service for
: MSN Passport. Companies such as Barnes & Noble and Costco are expected to use the
: technology. While I have not yet tried it, Passport supposedly allows users to sign in once,
: access their information and then share it with others (other sites). Can anyone explain the
: security risks associated with keeping your information stored online? With regards to shopping
: online, I do recommend http://www.volumebuy.com/vbuy_site/default_pro3.asp- a group buying site. And the checkout process is rather
: easy!

: Just How Safe Is Aol?
: With the recent password thefts occurring on America Online, users are beginning to question the
: service’s security features. Malicious email was sent from Opera Mail, a free Web service to AOL
: users. Random AOL users would find upon opening their mail that they would not be receiving
: the message they had hoped for. Instead, they would be informed that their password (which
: would pop up in the email) was just stolen. In my view, it seems that those who know how to
: manipulate the system will simply manipulate the “to” field in the email you receive to make you
: believe it’s one of your friends. Which leads me to ask, will we ever be free from viruses? On a
: side note, I do recommend http://www.volumebuy.com/vbuy_site/default_pro3.asp- a group buying site I found online. Perhaps we could
: all pool together to get some Norton Anti-virus!

: Affordable Computers
: The number of people who have purchased a computer has grown at an astronomical rate the
: last few years alone. Perhaps more impressive however is how remarkably affordable these
: machines have become. Compaq for example is now offering what’s being called the Deskpro
: computer, which is expected to be priced at the low price of $819. Will prices drop any lower?
: Perhaps more important, what kind of parts are we getting for that cheap a price? In another
: finding, I recommend http://www.volumebuy.com/vbuy_site/default_pro3.asp. This is a group buying site that sells all kinds of goods and
: services from hardware and software, to discounted gasoline and travel.

: E-Mail In Your Pocket
: I really am happy that you can finally have wireless messaging and wired e-mail connectivity in
: one device. Next year, VTech will release a device that will allow you to send and receive e-mail
: via a traditional connection and receive (not send) wireless pages. Seems like a neat new toy.
: Has anyone heard about anything like this? As it relates to other neat things, I do recommend
: one of my recent finds- http://www.volumebuy.com/vbuy_site/default_pro3.asp. A group buying website filled with all kinds of goods and
: services.

: Software
: I was recently on the web and caught an article about a new way to buy goods and services
: online- group buying. The concept is rather interesting. Group buyers together into buying pools
: to purchase goods and services. One particular site that does this is Volumebuy.com. I’m well
: aware of the existing buying models such as the auctions, but have my qualms about it. I would
: be most interested in hearing about anyone’s experience with group buying- anyone who would
: like to share?

:
: New Software Website
: In searching the web, I found a new site that sells such products as Norton Antivirus at great
: prices by pooling people together into buying pools. I’m curious to know if anyone else has ever
: taken part in this type of aggregate buying. I happened to look at
: http://www.volumebuy.com/vbuy_site/default_pro3.asp and was impressed with the wide variety of goods and services offered.

:
: Does anyone have any idea how to properly adjust the settings on a computer monitor? The
: directions supplied with my monitor are not at all clear and do not sufficiently explain how to set
: the adjustments properly. I was wondering if there are any sites online that suggest tips on
: adjusting such things as contrast and the black lines that go around the ends of the screen.
: Anyone have any suggestions? Relating to hardware, I would like to recommend a great site-
: http://www.volumebuy.com/vbuy_site/default_pro3.asp. This site groups people together into buying pools. Interesting concept.

:
: Free Palm Software
: It seems as though more and more of us are purchasing personal digital assistants, or PDA’s for
: short. I find myself constantly searching for places that I can download PDA software for free. Of
: all the software I have loaded on my own PDA (Palm V), two of my favorite programs include:
: LauncherIlll and AportisDoc Reader. Launcherlll allows you to group applications into tabs,
: making programs easier to launch. The tabs can be organized any way you like and allows you to
: drag and drop programs between them. The second piece of software I recommend is called
: AportisDoc Reader. This document reader gives you the ability to view most reference files with
: ease. I find most of what I want now online. I came across one new site that looks rather
: interesting. It’s http://www.volumebuy.com/vbuy_site/default_pro3.asp, I suggest taking a look.

: Inexpensive Digital Camera
: If you’ve ever wanted to buy a digital camera, but did not want to spend a lot of money, then I
: suggest checking out the Agfa ePhoto 780c. I believe they go for about $170. This camera offers
: a great way to inexpensively post pictures on the web, or email pictures to your friends. It has
: 350,000 pixel sensor (interpolates up to 1024x768) and has a fixed focal length equivalent to
: 50mm (50mm is the best choice for a fixed length). I bought mine in a retail store, but I’m sure
: they exist online. On a separate note, I found a neat, money saving site
: that http://www.volumebuy.com/vbuy_site/default_pro3.asp is worth checking out.

: Making Web Sites Easier to Manage
: Most of us, especially those inexperienced with shopping online, might find that navigating certain
: websites are unnecessarily challenging. I often find myself searching through many pages within
: a website to find what I am after. How can this issue be more easily resolved? I only hope that
: solutions are proposed at next week’s Internet World conference in New York. Rumor has it that
: InterWorld Corp., Intershop Communications Inc. and others are due to unveil new application
: suites specifically designed to make it easier for IT managers to develop a more manageable
: website. In the interim, I am constantly looking for easy to navigate, cool sites. This week I found
: http://www.volumebuy.com/vbuy_site/default_pro3.asp. A great site that brings people together into buying groups.

: Cyber Rules
: Thought I’d share a great book that I just finished reading. The book is called Cyber Rules by
: Thomas Siebel. Regardless of what you sell, this book defines the dos and don’t s of moving a
: portion of, or all your business online. As I see more and more users making purchases online, I
: understand the need for managers read these types of books. My Internet recommendation for
: the week is http://www.volumebuy.com/vbuy_site/default_pro3.asp, a neat site where you can buy many goods and services at low
: prices, by joining buying pools. I suggest taking a look at it.

: Amazon’s New Anywhere Program
: Now consumers can shop and check online auctions from wireless devices. With Amazon’s
: introduction of the ‘Anywhere Program,’ users have access to one-click shopping and product
: searching. The program is compatible for use with 3Com Corp’s Palm VII. Users need only
: download an application from www.palm.net or from www.amazon.com/anywhere. I found an
: interesting site that sells electronics, travel and wireless goods and services at really good prices.
: My site of the week is http://www.volumebuy.com/vbuy_site/default_pro3.asp. This site pools buyers after the same goods and
: services together into buying pools. Check it out.

:
: Consumer Expectations in the Video Game Market Grow
: Many years ago Nintendo captured the attention of gaming enthusiasts by bringing affordable
: high quality video games to the consumer market. Today, it seems that a manufacturers’ ability to
: sell a new video game system depends on the quality level of the graphics, the price of the unit,
: cost of games and perhaps most important, the quality of the games themselves. Right now, I feel
: that Sega’s Dreamcast is the best overall system on the market with 128 bit cd quality. Will the
: release of Play Station II by Sony this February be able to compete? What can we expect two
: years from now? By the way, I found a great new way to by my electronics online at
: http://www.volumebuy.com/vbuy_site/default_pro3.asp. This site is cool because you get really low prices by joining others in
: different types of buying pools.

: MP3 Players
: MP3s are by far one of the more awesome means created to listen to and store music. Now,
: consumers can purchase portable MP3 players to listen to their MP3’s on the go. My personal
: favorite machine is the jazPiper by RFC Distribution in Singapore. This machine has 32MB of
: built-in storage (expandable to 64MB with the player's SmartMedia slot), voice recording and a
: digital telephone book that allows storage of up to 250 names and numbers. I do most of my
: shopping online at this great new site called http://www.volumebuy.com/vbuy_site/default_pro3.asp.
: I suggest you check it out.

: Buying a New Monitor
: In this last week alone, I must have read about what seems like almost every new 21 inch monitor
: ever made, and was still not convinced that the image quality I would get with a new 21 inch is as
: good as lets say my old one- despite all the recent engineering changes in monitors. While I’m
: not the most technologically savvy individual, I did learn that the quality of the Cathode Ray
: Tubes in these larger monitors has significantly improved by all the manufacturers. In addition, I
: found out from surfing the web that current monitors are using digital controls and onscreen
: displays, which include adjustments for such things as pincushioning and trapezoidal distortion.
: While I can’t say that I have any clue as to what this all means, I do know that I will be very
: careful as to where and how spend my money. I found a great place to buy hardware online at
: http://www.volumebuy.com/vbuy_site/default_pro3.asp. Unfortunately, they did not have as of yet the specific monitor I was after in their
: product line. I did however really like the concept of group buying and hope to return to that site
: later on.

: The Smart Trash Can
: I’ve seen some pretty interesting inventions, but this one clearly takes the cake. NCR Corp has
: created a smart trash can that recognizes the type of waste you drop in as it hovers above the
: bin. After identifying the objects contained in the bin, it separates the junk into one of four
: compartments- bottles, paper and food are tucked away separately.
: The bin is also capable of reading bar codes, and is able to tell its user what goods are routinely
: disposed and in what quantities. The unit is not yet available for sale. On a side note, I found a
: really great website this week at http://www.volumebuy.com/vbuy_site/default_pro3.asp. This site aggregates buyers together into
: buying pools to purchase goods and services. I recommend checking it out.

:
: Launch of Windows 2000
: Rumor has it that Microsoft is scheduled to launch Windows 2000 around the second week of
: February, 2000. International launch is said to occur at the same time. While Microsoft expects
: Windows 2000 to do quite well in the marketplace, they concede that it will not match the
: unbelievable sales of Windows ’95. How do you all think that the new windows will fare in the
: marketplace? Windows 2000 has four features that stand out immediately. They include: the
: ability to Internet able businesses, new found reliability, better manageability and its status as the
: “best platform for new devices”- by whom I do not know! I certainly hope that Microsoft beta tests
: Windows 2000 more than they did with Windows ’95. Has anyone had an opportunity to try it out?
: Relating to software, I would like to recommend a great place to make purchases online. The site
: is http://www.volumebuy.com/vbuy_site/default_pro3.asp. and is one I use often. Check it out.

: Mac OS 9’s Incompatibility Issues
: Mac OS 9 is soon to be released and already several third-party developers are finding
: compatibility problems between their products and the operating system. From what I’ve seen on
: the net, most people believe that the problems are with Adobe System Inc.’s popular Adobe Type
: Manager and Adobe Type Reunion. Does anyone know anything specific about this? What
: implications will this incompatibility issue have on print and design professionals? On a side note,
: I came across a real interesting website at http://www.volumebuy.com/vbuy_site/default_pro3.asp. I suggest checking it out.

: Apple’s Answer to Gaming
: The new iMacs are said to have improved graphics, hardware, sound and performance, which in
: my view is critical if you like to play games on your computer. Gaming on Macs however was not
: always great. Apparently, I was not the only one who was upset with the graphics and sound
: quality coming out of the older Macs. Now, with iMac’s new look, better performance and yes,
: better graphics and sound, gaming is fun again. What do you all think about Mac’s attempt at
: improving gaming? On a side note, I found a new way to shop online- its something called
: aggregate buying. I recommend http://www.volumebuy.com/vbuy_site/default_pro3.asp and suggest you check it out.
:

: Taiwan Earthquake Does Not Affect Dell
: According to Dell Computer Corp. chairman Michael Dell last month’s earthquake in Taiwan,
: which knocked out industrial production will not affect the company’s financial performance.
: Taiwanese computer parts plants are said to be operational once more. If this information is true,
: why then does it still take Dell so long to deliver orders? Is Dell truly back to business, or are they
: incurring problems getting chips from overseas? Has anyone any idea as to what is going on? As
: a side note, would like to share an interesting site I found recently.
: It’s http://www.volumebuy.com/vbuy_site/default_pro3.asp.
: I suggest checking it out.

: The New iBook, is it Too “girly?”
: While I have not yet seen a new iBook in person, I have read many reviews on it. It seems that
: most of what has been said centers on form rather than function. When iBook was unveiled at
: MacWorld this past July, some critics called it “girly.” I personally don’t quite see it. In fact, I
: applaud Apple for using vivid color and design technique. What do you all think about the look of
: the new iBook? Are the critics right? Does it look too feminine? On a side note, I came across a
: new site this week that I happen to really like. The address is www.volumebuy.com, check it out.

:
: Cookies
: Everyday, I hear so much about these things on our computers called “cookies”, but can’t say I
: know much if anything about them. Can anyone explain in simple terms what it is they do? To
: quote something I found online “a cookie is a message given to a web browser by a web server.”
: What kind of message are we talking about and why do they exist? . It seems as though nobody
: likes them, but why? While I can’t share anything about cookies, I can share a neat site I found
: and like. The address is http://www.volumebuy.com/vbuy_site/default_pro3.asp. I suggest taking a look.

:
:
: Intel’s New 64-bit Chip
: I’m thinking of purchasing one of Intel’s new 64-bit processor chips because all the technically
: savvy people I know swear by it. Can anyone tell me what it is that’s so great about it? What will
: 64-bits actually do for me? As a side note, I found a new site that looks quite interesting. The site
: is http://www.volumebuy.com/vbuy_site/default_pro3.asp. I recommend it.

:
: The 700mhz AMD Chip
: I’m quite curious to see if the 700mhz AMD chip will be reasonably priced. Does anyone have any
: idea what it is expected to sell for? I’ve had AMD chips before and have never incurred any
: problems using them, but would like to know specific reasons for staying with AMD and not
: switching to the popular Pentium III- any ideas? I came across a new site that I would like to
: recommend- Volumebuy.com. Check it out.
: Army Websites Switch to Mac WebSTAR Server Software
: I’m not partial to either Apple or Microsoft, but was happy to learn that Army websites would now
: switch from NT, to Mac OS running WebSTAR server software. I’m glad to see Apple getting
: some more business. Anyone have any idea why they believe that WebSTAR is more secure?
: On a side note, I found a cool new Group Buying site at http://www.volumebuy.com/vbuy_site/default_pro3.asp . This is a really
: neat way to make purchases online.

: Why I like Apple's new iBook. The touchpad Apple claims is the best, and the keyboard isn't bad
: either. Apple continues to innovate, leading the industry in more than just design. The iBook
: includes a built-in antenna wrapped around the screen. You can easily add a $100 wireless
: networking card and it is speedy wireless networking. What is your opinion? I was hoping to buy
: it from http://www.volumebuy.com/vbuy_site/default_pro3.asp - new cool site that I like, but they don’t have it yet. Do you think that
: group power buying will become a way to get products at good prices? Let me know what you
: think.

:
: E-commerce- Do We Need Rules?
: Some e-commerce companies do not see the urgency for nailing down specific rules.
: An industry group is trying to make electronic commerce safe for consumers. More than 200
: members have agreed on an outline for regulating the Internet. Do you think that it is possible to
: enforce? On another topic, I came across an interesting site – http://www.volumebuy.com/vbuy_site/default_pro3.asp. Sounds like
: the way to go. Check it out.

:
: What is future of AMD?
: I found the lab results from *PC Magazine* to be quite interesting, perhaps even surprising. They
: tested today's major processors (five in all) and awarded the performance crown to the new AMD
: Athlon. Is this the end of Intel rule? On another subject, I came across an interesting site at
: http://www.volumebuy.com/vbuy_site/default_pro3.asp. They pool people together to leverage the group purchase. It’s an
: Interesting concept.

: Software Languages
: Java has become an essential technology for the growth of the
: Internet and e-commerce, but it's too early to tell in what form
: it will emerge. What is your point of view? On another subject, I came across an interesting site

: to waste time creating interactive emails. What do you think? On a side note, I came across a

: Excite's colorful and highly configurable personal page appears automatically when you go to
: www.excite.com, unlike what happens at sites such as Yahoo! or Lycos where the site's main
: page is different from your personal page. What is your preference – separate page or home

:
: The news that Dell usurped Compaq as PC sales leader in the third quarter shouldn't surprise
: anyone. Dell figured out the direct sales model early. And embraced the Internet early as well. It
: also entered the business market at the right time, promising competitive pricing and above
: average service. Compaq, in my view, still clings to the old retail model. Compaq can't have it
: both ways and succeed; they have to choose a direction and go for it. By the way, direct sales
: model looks like it finally has a competitor. It is group buying. I surfed the site Volumebuy.com.
: They have a new method of making sales – group buying. It can take off fast I believe. What do
: you think?

: I want an all-in-one device that surfs the Net, works as a pager, keeps my calendar and lets me
: do email from anywhere. Oh, and an inflatable full-sized keyboard would be nice, too. Too much
: to ask? I think future cellular phones will do exactly that. By the way, if you need good long
: distance, cellular or other stuff, I recommend visiting volumebuy.com. Good prices and an
: interesting sales method – pools. At this site you join buying groups to get a lower price.

Problem with loading PCDJ PHAT from download file

I have downloaded PCDJ PHAT from the Hit Squad site and attempted to run the executable to setup the product. It first asks if I am running HTTP Proxy, which I am not and then tries to download the latest DirectX software. I have DirectX 6.0 installed and PCDJ PAT tells me that it needs 5 or higher. I do not really want to upgrade DirectX right now, what do I do?

Re: Problem with loading PCDJ PHAT from download file

Credit Where Due - Anvil Studio

All too often we talk about software that doesn't perform, or companies that don't support their products.

I have just had a very positive experience with Anvil Studio, a program produced by Willow Software to record, compose, play and edit MIDI and WAV files.

The basic Anvil Studio is free with certain "pay for" upgrades. I downloaded the program, liked it, purchased a couple of upgrades, installed them (very easy) and lo!!! One of the upgrades didn't work. So I e-mailed Anvil Studio Support. In less then 12 hours I had a response - the fix didn't work - emailed them again. Six hours later, after the folks at tech support had gone out and purchased a configuration similar to my setup and tested it they had updated the upgrade, put it on the net and notified me of the fix. Did the new fix work - you bet!!!!

If you are looking for some music software that does what it promises go to www.anvilstudio.com

Great folks there ...

Thank you,

Bryce

You could sing it yourself ;)
There's no way to do what you want, with one exception:
You could try to lay your hands on a karaoke-CD with the song you want, and make sure one channel has vocals AND music and the other channel is only the music.
This is usually the case on these CD's.
Any voice-cut algorithm (like in Cool Edit or in some plug-ins) can subtract the music-only channel from the music-and-vocals-channel, leaving.... right, ONLY the vocals.
This is a bit tedious, but there's no easier way, except learning to sing yourself or find someone who can...

2 Soundcards

Does anybody know how to configure 2 sound cards on a single PC. I would like to use one for use with Cubase VST 3.65 and the other for Gigasampler.
I tried setting them both up but VST doesn't recognize both of them.

Re: 2 Soundcards

I had a similar problem.
Fact is, it's all trial and error
here's what worked for me.
sounblaster 16 and yamaha opl3 or
sounblaster 16 and ess 1868 audiodrive.
there are probably other combos too.
all i know is that i couldn't put two of the same soundcards in the one machine.

Updated Encore software

I purchased Encore in 1996 and have been slowly learning to use it. Are there updated versions? How can I get them? who do I contact? The store where I purchased it has gone out of business, most software stores haven't heard of it, and the telephone number on my "About Encore" page is disconnected.

Two questions:

How much are you willing to spend?

I will have a P3 500, with 128 meg of ram. I have a sliding scale about spending money depending on quality, I suppose I would like to stay under $100. Thanks for responding lenny.

Anyone know of a CD Burning proggy that can........

segment say a 60minute wav file into multiple tracks. I have a kewl club mix on video but I want to put it onto CD but first of all record it as one hole wav file and set up multiple tracks within the mix. I`m not sure of any Cd burning progs that can do this but anyhelp would be much appreciated.
Thankx
Sam

Re: Anyone know of a CD Burning proggy that can........

I would do it this way: sample the song to a computer and then divide it with some audio editing soft.(eg sound forge) into tracks as you want. Then you can use any of burning soft( i like Nero Burning ROM) witch can set pauses between tracks so if you set 0 there will be no pause. But your CDR must support this feature.

Re: Anyone know of a CD Burning proggy that can........

WinOnCD software lets you place track markers
anywhere on a track
