Well you could always get away with a P200 with 32MB of RAM and an ordinary Soundblaster. It depends on what you want to do and how much you're willing to spend.

What Geoff said is exactly correct. Although I use a Pentium II 400 with 384 megs of ram and a soundblaster live value card, I use Fast Tracker 2.08, and being a free program, I happen to think it's one of the best out there. It is a 32 track mixer, sequencer, sampler all in one. To hear what it can do, go to http://www.mp3.com/straightupbeats and have a listen. These are hip hop beats, bass music, and other styles there. Plus...it's all free to download (Mostly Encouraged!) and royalty free also to use for your rap or demo songs, but have a listen and see the potential music you can do with it.

cubasis and other sound cards

soundcard packed up.
I now have a Yamaha OPL card and it is fine except Cubasis reports no creative card present. Can I get any patches to enable Cubasis to work with the yamaha card ??????

did you try it on the steinberg homepage yet?
they provide drivers for nearly every hardware
you can use with cubase.

It is so simple that doesn`t need any explanation but you realy want help here it is.
First open cool96 and check two boxes:
1 save (it enable you to save your job when it`s finished)
2 and other one (for example reverb and echo)
Then open sound file you want to reverb or echo or whatever you chose before.
Now after opening you must find desaired efect among others and choos it by cliking on it. You will see dialog box. I sugest using one of the presets offered by authors. My faforite is : large occupated hall. Click on it two times and then "enter". In that way after a whille you`ll get reverbed wave. If you want it reverbed only partly before you start proceeding select the part you want to change (just highlight it)
That`s all. Sorry for English.

Help!!!
Have just bought PC for learning my way about digital audio... with an SB-Live! value... have tried installing two versions of Windoze 95 and now 98... but when running a command prompt (I'm a DOS fan at heart) it all slows down to a crawl... then hangs. Ctrl-alt-delete reveals that an instance of MSGSRV32 is not resonding. Killing that makes everything OK again. I renamed EMU10K1.VXD so that it would not be loaded, and the problem disappeared. Fine... except... NO SOUND! (Obviously)
It looks like any 16bit software upsets the applecart.
Even playing midi files results in hangups with rundll problems. I'm REALLY losing patience now. I'm very unlikely to ever buy Creative products ever again.
Be warned!
Any ideas anyone? Creative have given up on me...

What Version of MacOS are you running? Sometimes Upgrading to MacOS 8.0/8.5.1 deletes the authorization keys that are hidden on your hard drive.
sometimes this also happens if you delete the preferences for the application. If you have a back up of your system.
Also try using Norton Utilities to "unerase" the authorization key. Some applications actually use the name "authorization key" and just hide the file from finder view.
If you are really losing business. I would recommend that you go and purchase your own license for the software.
If you have a backup of your system/startup drive, you can probably recover the authorization key from the back up.

Converting MIDI to WAVE using a software synth

Wondering if anyone can suggest software that might help me.
I recently aquired Seer Systems' SurReal software synth because it gives
me the flexibilty of using a multitude of sound fonts for MIDI playback.
I am now trying to put my music to CD and need to convert it to WAV to mix
it down and then burn the CD. I'm using Cakewalk Pro V7 to do my work.
Cakewalk suggests arming audio record tracks and then playing the MIDI files
thus recording the MIDI as WAV files. The problem I'm having is that (I think)
I am overloading my sound card (or CPU) playing and recording samples at the
same time. It would seem that since all SurReal is doing is triggering samples
via MIDI messages that some software ought to be able to bypass the play
function and just take the samples being triggered by the MIDI messages directly
to a WAV file. Is this true or am I forced to go to more hardware resource or
an outboard sound module?

if you mean sheet music, you should use a notation program. There are
several downloadble on this site. But you always have to do a lot of
editing to get readable results.

:Yes first of all these can be obtained at kazaa for free. 1. autotune industry standard will correct vocalist if singing out(great program)no loss.automatically or you can set and draw which note you want that person to sing. also sonar xl can do editing. free on kazaa w/plugins

Apple CD player should be on your System MacOS CD
Make sure that sound manager or Sound Control Panel/Monitors & Sound control panel is set to have audio input from your internal CD Rom Drive.

normally I'd prefer cubase or logic audio (but
they're expensive).
hmm.. I think you'll have to accept a compromise:
get a tracker or a program like music maker
(although I really DON'T LIKE this one!! =).
you'll have to record all your sounds coming out
of your midi-sources but you'll be able to
arrange and mix your samples (I think WAVe-files)
within a tracker.
the impulse tracker also has a cutoff- and a
resonance filter to work with.
maybe this can help you a bit...

I´ve done some audiorecording into Cubase VST3.553 and I wanna burn a record. The problem is when I wanna run a "mixdown"(from ex 7 tracks to 1 stereotrack)the mixdowntrack gets no good.
I need to create a wawefile so I can pick the file up in either Sound Forge or WaweLaband, but when I run a mixdown the sound is fading away, strange noises appear and I can´t use it.
Maybe the processor isn´t good enough, maybe I´m doing it wrong.

I loaded a demo program of Cakewalk Pro Audio Version 7. - After looking at program I decided to remove with the uninstall feature provided. - I now cannot play Midi Files using my Midi File player. All midi files now have a changed icon proceeding the song name. This icon is now a Cakewalk Icon!!
Every time I try to play a Midi file error message tells me that can't find a particular Cakewalk file.
How do i retrieve my Midi Player? Perhaps reload Windows?

2 and other one (for example reverb and echo)
Then open sound file you want to reverb or echo or whatever you chose before.
Now after opening you must find desaired efect among others and choos it by cliking on it. You will see dialog box. I sugest using one of the presets offered by authors. My faforite is : large occupated hall. Click on it two times and then "enter". In that way after a whille you`ll get reverbed wave. If you want it reverbed only partly before you start proceeding select the part you want to change (just highlight it)

SBDead! - what a **** soundcard...
Help!!!
Have just bought PC for learning my way about digital audio... with an SB-Live! value... have tried installing two versions of Windoze 95 and now 98... but when running a command prompt (I'm a DOS fan at heart) it all slows down to a crawl... then hangs. Ctrl-alt-delete reveals that an instance of MSGSRV32 is not resonding. Killing that makes everything OK again. I renamed EMU10K1.VXD so that it would not be loaded, and the problem disappeared. Fine... except... NO SOUND! (Obviously)
It looks like any 16bit software upsets the applecart.
Even playing midi files results in hangups with rundll problems. I'm REALLY losing patience now. I'm very unlikely to ever buy Creative products ever again.
Be warned!
Any ideas anyone? Creative have given up on me...

Download Live Ware 3.0 and the latest drivers (sblw9xup.exe), install Live Ware 3.0, reboot, delete emu10k1.vxd, install sblw9xup.exe, and reboot.

What Version of MacOS are you running? Sometimes Upgrading to MacOS 8.0/8.5.1 deletes the authorization keys that are hidden on your hard drive.
sometimes this also happens if you delete the preferences for the application. If you have a back up of your system.
Also try using Norton Utilities to "unerase" the authorization key. Some applications actually use the name "authorization key" and just hide the file from finder view.
If you are really losing business. I would recommend that you go and purchase your own license for the software.
If you have a backup of your system/startup drive, you can probably recover the authorization key from the back up.

Converting MIDI to WAVE using a software synth
Wondering if anyone can suggest software that might help me.
I recently aquired Seer Systems' SurReal software synth because it gives
me the flexibilty of using a multitude of sound fonts for MIDI playback.
I am now trying to put my music to CD and need to convert it to WAV to mix
it down and then burn the CD. I'm using Cakewalk Pro V7 to do my work.
Cakewalk suggests arming audio record tracks and then playing the MIDI files
thus recording the MIDI as WAV files. The problem I'm having is that (I think)
I am overloading my sound card (or CPU) playing and recording samples at the
same time. It would seem that since all SurReal is doing is triggering samples
via MIDI messages that some software ought to be able to bypass the play
function and just take the samples being triggered by the MIDI messages directly
to a WAV file. Is this true or am I forced to go to more hardware resource or
an outboard sound module?

if you mean sheet music, you should use a notation program. There are
several downloadble on this site. But you always have to do a lot of
editing to get readable results.

Does anyone have any suggestions for software that will edit the pitch of certain parts in wav files. For example, a vocal or guitar track might be good except for 1 or 2 spots. I'd like to edit those spots & correct the "sour" note or 2. Any suggestions?

:Yes first of all these can be obtained at kazaa for free. 1. autotune industry standard will correct vocalist if singing out(great program)no loss.automatically or you can set and draw which note you want that person to sing. also sonar xl can do editing. free on kazaa w/plugins

Logic Audio will do that for you........only it is expensive...........

Apple CD player should be on your System MacOS CD
Make sure that sound manager or Sound Control Panel/Monitors & Sound control panel is set to have audio input from your internal CD Rom Drive.

I want to be able to record live music like voice and non midi instraments and music created with a midi keyboard using just one program. normally I'd prefer cubase or logic audio (but

hmm.. I think you'll have to accept a compromise:
get a tracker or a program like music maker
(although I really DON'T LIKE this one!! =).
you'll have to record all your sounds coming out
of your midi-sources but you'll be able to
arrange and mix your samples (I think WAVe-files)
within a tracker.
the impulse tracker also has a cutoff- and a
resonance filter to work with.
maybe this can help you a bit...

I´ve done some audiorecording into Cubase VST3.553 and I wanna burn a record. The problem is when I wanna run a "mixdown"(from ex 7 tracks to 1 stereotrack)the mixdowntrack gets no good.
I need to create a wawefile so I can pick the file up in either Sound Forge or WaweLaband, but when I run a mixdown the sound is fading away, strange noises appear and I can´t use it.
Maybe the processor isn´t good enough, maybe I´m doing it wrong.

Problem playing midi files after loading Cakewalk Demo
I loaded a demo program of Cakewalk Pro Audio Version 7. - After looking at program I decided to remove with the uninstall feature provided. - I now cannot play Midi Files using my Midi File player. All midi files now have a changed icon proceeding the song name. This icon is now a Cakewalk Icon!!
Every time I try to play a Midi file error message tells me that can't find a particular Cakewalk file.
How do i retrieve my Midi Player? Perhaps reload Windows?
