Cakewalk Simultaneous Recording and Playback
I just got Cakewalk software with my new SoundBlaster Live Platinum (which I love, inputs and outputs of every size imaginable on the front of the comp!). I can record audio just fine into each track, but I need to hear a playback of all previous tracks while a record the following track. I'll I can hear during recording is a metronome. Any suggestions?
Re: Cakewalk Simultaneous Recording and Playback
unfortunately now you need a mixer to mix the playback and source together. In fact you need a 4-buss mixer or a mixer with send/return.
In the case of a 4-buss, 2 busses (L/R) go into the Live card rec, the other 2 go to your monitoring. You can control how much of each go to the speakers and how much of each go to the recorder.
If you feed the output of a 2 buss to both speakers and recorder, you'll get "howl-round" when you fade up the "playback" tracks......they will be fed back to record in and out again etc etc
Re: Cakewalk Simultaneous Recording and Playback
The Poor man's solution is:
If you have a processor us the headphone jack to monitor what your doing with the sound. Go to Radio shack and get a Gold 1/4 to 1/8 converter, and a Y headphone jack if you don't have a headphone and out jack on your Keyboard. The reason for the Gold converter is to limit line noise. I have a crap guitar and a cheep keyboard and I get limited line noise. . .and im going thru the soundcard on my CPU. Hope this helps my friends out their without alot of cash.

If I know Creative Labs correctly, before you buy expensive hardware, open "Surround Mixer" from Creative Launcher. Select appropriate settings (f.e. Compose deskop Music and MIDI sequencing) and try again,
test - ignore

Re: Cakewalk Simultaneous Recording and Playback
I finally got it working. I searched under every menu and submenu and finally found a simple check box to enable it. I don't know why it wouldn't be set up to be automatically enabled since the software was bundled with my SB Live card.

This is a typical overkill: they Creative labs wanted to create Professional Quality soundcard for regular users. You;kk get used to it. The Sound card is really good thou.
Kawai Q80 files to MID. & vice versa
Who can give me a solution to convert Kawai Q80 files in to MID. & vice versa ?

I don`t think that there is a converter. I have a lot of Q80 midifiles and I connet the Q80 via midi to the PC midi in. It`s not comfortable, but a possible way.

Borrow a Q80 ex or get an upgrade kit if they are still available if not play between 2 sequencers.

Try the site - www.giebler.com. I have used his Kawai Q80 conversion software for about a year and it works great!

Hello,
Yes there is! Try WAVmaker. You'll find some information on it here.

I don't think there is a software available, which can convert .wav file (= sound /voice) to .mid file (= music score / music note). Music note are c, #c, d, #d, = special frequency, say a = 440 hz, something like that. And voices are physical vibration with wide frequency range. And most of the frequencies are not 440 hz, 440(2)^(1/12) hz, …880 hz. you need a FFT (Fast Fourier Transformation) program to convert wave (time domain) to spectra (frequency domain ). And then do lots of artificial intelligent analysis, and fuzzy analysis to get the basic frequency and shift them to the nearest c, c#, … system. You still get error. 10 years ago, I worked on this area, and wrote programs, which could do this kind of job: the software could list to solo (vocal or instrument)and convert wave to music score. If any body knows there is some software in the world can to the similar work, I am really interested in knowing it though I have quitted for a long time, please let me know, thanks!
But converting from mid code to music wave, this is very easy, using hard ware, electronic circuits, or software (this is the best way without sound chip, generating wave file directly).
I have left this area for years, maybe need to upgrade, thanks for updating me!

Re: i don't think so...
There are several progs that will take wavs and translate them to midi. They are not 100% accurate (think of them to music as OCR's are to text - they are not perfect, but they'll save you a lot of time).
Some are designed for live input (ie Sound2MIDI) and allow you to sing/play an instrument and create a MIDI file.
Others will take a WAV and translate it.
DigitalEar claims to be very accurate, including vibrato/slurs etc, but I've only used it for very basic melody lines.
Akoff's Composer is also well regarded in this area.
Most of these progs have trial/demo versions that you can test before you purchase.
Hope this helps.
Re: i don't think so...
Very glad to know that, and seems that people are interested in doing so.
However, there are still something unknown.
1) In 12-equal temperament, frequencies: a = 880hz, #a=(2)^(1/12)=932.33 hz, . . .
what would we get if the singer or player play the frequencies in between of this system?
2) what if they sing / play the temperaments other than 12-equal one? Say, pure temperament, 5th circle, or others that is even far away from those?
3) the above questions1)+2). We have thousands of records from folk singers /instrument players. They don't know a, #a, b, . . . just wonder what could we get?
Who got sharp ears like Bela Bartok.
To do a good job, normally need 1-mathematician (vector analysis in functional space of high dimensions) 2--physicist (acoustics, spectrum analysis) 3-musician knowing temperament 4-computer expert. Even having 4 of them siting together, they can not talk. No common language. However, I am 4 in one. But I quitted from this field.
Thanks again for updating me.

slightly off topic but ...
I'm a radio journalist and I want to transfer bits of interview from my minidisc to PC to edit them into packages, and output them back onto minidisc.
I've just traded up from cassette and razor/sticky tape editting. A friend uses Premiere to edit video - something with that kind of feel would suit me fine.
Any suggestions for software... preferably shareware or freeware? I've got a basic-ish wavetable soundcard - will that do the job?
Answers please!!!
Thanks
Matt
Re: slightly off topic but ...
Hello Matt,
This isn't an off topic question. What you need is an audio editor, preferably one which has the ability to apply effects and so forth (just in case you need them). You should head to our audio editors section. A popular audio editor is Cool Edit 96. You may want to try a multi-track recorder if you have multiple voices and want to do anything in the radio documentary genre. You'll find multi-trackers here. N-track is a good multi-tracker.
Cheers
Geoff

Hi Matt!
Also you would need a sound card capable of communicating with MiniDisk recorders. I suggest 'Sound Blaster Live!' or 'SBL! Value'. It has built-in interface for minidisk recording and all needed jacks and it comes with audio editors.
Software that can play(sing) the lyrics thus imitating a singer?
Hi,
Sometime ago while sirfing the Net I stumbled on a
shareware software for McIntosh which was able to
receive lyrics and notes as input and perform (sing)
the lyrics as a singer, but I forgot the name and
place I saw that program. Is there anybody who can
direct me to the right place?
Thanks!

You can get VocalWriter at http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/programs/VocalWriter_mac/
and there's another one called SING 202 for Macintosh which you can get at http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/programs/SING_mac/

I need a tool to remove unwanted plugins, but most of them come with an uninstaller for a complete package not single plugs....

Every file I try to download off this site doesn't work! I use Getright and it says that the target is a web page, even though it is a .zip or .exe file. It's really pissing me off. Can someone fill me in on why this might be happening and if there is anyway I can avoid it?
Thanks
