I have got my Rio500 and XP working!!!!
I have gotten my Rio 500 to work in XP. i went to this site http://www.rioport.com/SoftwareResources/1,4055,,00.html
and downloaded the following
1. Rio Audio Manager 3.5
RAM_3513d_E is the file name
2.Rio 500 Driver for XP
010125a_RioSupport_All is the file name
Installed both and it sees the Rio and I can transfer MP3s again!!!!!!!!
NOTE: Your MP3s cannot be VBR. I tried mine and they transferred but did not play. I re-ripped them at a constant 128, 160 and 256kbs and all 3 versions played fine (Don't use VBR) (VBR is variable bit rate) and you will be using your Rio in no time.

Answer: I got it to work and some of the other advice here didn't work for me. First you have to plug the rio 500 into the pc and when it says 'new hardware found' put your rioport cd into the cd rom, don't let xp search for it by itself because it won't find it. Click all of the prompts to do your own manual search for the software and direct the wizard to your cd rom drive and click ok. It will give you a couple of warnings about how the software isn't verified by xp and a bunch of other crap. DO NOT BE FRIGHTENED BY THIS! Just click install anyway and after the wizard installs it from the cd rom you have to reboot. You're not finished yet. When you come back up, go to this link:

and download the 2MB hardware driver for the 500/600/800 model of rio player. Install it, reboot and it will work.

need cd software for a rio 600
i have the rio 600 mp3 player. I have had it for years but lost the disk necessary to install the program on my computer. the old computer was ruined. does anyone know how i can get the software to be able to download music to my rio? i think i need some sort of usb port as well. Please help...

I am checking the warranty on the item. If it's under warranty can you just send it back to them because it wont work and maybe they'll send a replacement that will be supported. Just a thought!

Good news! I used brute force (I reformatted my hard drive and reinstalled XP from scratch) and now I can use the drivers without my computer spontaneously rebooting. Now I'll see if I can get it to work with Audible.

E-mail campaign
If you haven't done so already, please drop an e-mail to Rio Tech Support re: a driver for the 500 in Win XP at http://homepage.ntlworld.com/rphantom/rio_500_driver.exe. Maybe a flood of requests will speed them up a tad.

Curiously, XP "couldn't" find a driver for the Rio 500 (probably because it doesn't support WMA), which may just be coincidence, though one can't help but wonder. I have heardthat newer Rio players (like the 800, which does support WMA) do have
drivers present in XP.

Much though I despise Micosoft, this isn't its fault. Rio has not issued an XP driver because it considers the Rio 500 to be a "legacy" (outdated) product, despite the fact that new Rio 500s are still being sold. Apparently, they are hoping we will all run out and buy Rio 600s and 800s. If you want to get screwed when they release their next generation of products and stop supporting the 600 and 800, go right ahead. Otherwise, boycott Rio and Soniblue.

I am getting very frustrated with the fact that now that I have this new computer but I have to spend so much time trying to find all new drivers for everything I use. Microsoft is really starting to piss me off.

hey microsoft basher --- do you think microsoft makes the drivers for every single software out there? be pissed at RIO... they havent made the latest driver.

XP drivers/firmware??
I am running XP and the drivers work, but my rio 500 says about half of all songs are 12:15 in length and it won't play them! It is not a file format issue, nor the rio software. Has anyone run into this problem? Could this be an XP/firmware problem? Sometimes the same song will work, but a different version of it. Please help!

I downloaded the drivers that you posted, but sadly, after installing, none of my apps (WM, RioPort, etc.) can find the Rio 500. Looks like the Borg are forcing me to abandon Win altogether. My Linux box supports the 500 JUST FINE, even through all its upgrades ;-)
If anyone knows of any issues why this would not work on just a simple install, please let me know.

I cannot get the Rio 500 PC to work with Win XP either. Mighty disappointing since I've only had it about 6 months. I blame Rio for the incompatibility. I've e-mailed them twice about the issue, but have not gotten a response. They should also just stand up and let us know whether the Rio 500 will or will not ever be compatible on their support pages rather than just ignore the situation.
