Sound cards and DSP

Hi,

Im recording at home using Cakewalk 8.0. At present I
am using the generic soundcard on my Pentium II 233
When I try to run more than a couple of dsp effects
I lose midi sync and sometimes audio playback.
I want to upgrade my soundcard, probably to the Gina
by event, but I want to make sure this will solve my
clock and dsp problems.

Question 1: Can I run my current plugins from the Gina?

Question 2: Will I have to physically move my plugins
to the Gina card?

Question 3: How will I handle the sync between midi and
audio? (Gina does not have a midi interface)

Hi there !

1) Event GINA is a great audio-card,
Only for audio, but you can use it
with another MIDI-Card together without
problems (AWE64 works fine together).
2) You can run all your plugins on GINA
(why not)
3)Sync between MIDI and Audio depends
on the software you have
4)Loosing audio playback depends
on your processor speed. Try to switch off
some effects.
5) If you want a complete studio-card
with more features you can imagine,
buy the Creamware PULSAR:
I've never seen and heard such a great
sound !!!
Card includes:
Synthesizer, MODULAR-Synth, Sample-Player,
DSP-Effects, Mixing, Automation, 20 I/O at 24bit 96kHz,
All possiple COAX and optical I/O.....
My opinion: Why to buy lots of expensive
software when you can get a soundcard
that makes all for you ??

Event Gina utilizes S/PDIF clock sync type. And yer right it doesn't offer midi control. The Gina's MSRP is $599. Seems ta me you could get a far better card for around the same price. If you are serious about Event cards though, I would suggest you look at da Layla. Although its nearly twice the price.

If you are having DSP problems, I would be more concerned with beefing up yer system. Although ya are gunna have ta get a new card.

I'd seriously take a look at EGO-Systems WaMi Rack or Guillemot's Maxi Studio Isis

I just ordered one today and will have it tomorrow.
But I have been reading GOOD reviews on this unit.
Like most 16/20 bit recorders, there are limits to
it's potential... I moved from a Tascam 564 4 track,
16 bit recorder to this unit. Here is an August 99

I just had one delivered from my local music shop last week & I'm quite impressed so far - teamed up with a Mackie 1604VLZ mixer & some computer based MIDI gear it makes an excellent home studio system

What hardware and version of logic are you using?
I'm running Logic platinum on a cyrix p300 pc with an audiowerk8 soundcard and have no problem hearing midi and audio tracks while I'm recording midi or audio.
Try looking at your sound card settings and see if you can set it to be bidirectional,i.e. input and output sound at the same time.
Let me know if you still have problems.

Help! Can you help me find the right software?
I've been looking around but still haven't found anything
that says it does what I want to do. Which is:

In general I want to use songs and sounds that I
have already recorded on my hard drive (wav. files)
to mix and sequence together into a long dj set or audio
collage, not in real-time, and to be recorded back to my
hard drive.

One important function that I have not seen on most
mixer/sequencer software is the ability to change the
pitch of tracks so that their beats can be matched.
Additionally, I need more than just the 2 tracks that
some dj software provides.

Is there anything that can do this?????
I would appreciate any public or personal help!

Sounds like you need ACID from Sonic Foundry.
It does pretty much everything you seem to need.
There are various versions available...check out the
demo at Sonic Foundry's website. Oh, you can do it real
time if you want : )

Acid is great for matching tempos and you can't beat the excellence of Sonic Foundry software products. Their software is definitely above average. If you want an alternative mixing software package that can also handle .mp3's try Internet Audio Mix. It does a pretty good job mixing large wave files.

Hi, I don't know of an instant fix but I know of
Epson printers that have done similar things
before. Try printing in best mode, etc. or borrow
a friend's printer to see if your printer is the
problem (preferable a different model of printer,
eg HP).

LOGIC wont open my CD grabs

I've finally managed to record portions of a CD grab
into WAV form via Total Recorder. However, LOGIC 4.0 won't open the WAV so I can edit it, saying either 'it's not a Logic Audio file' or "this WAV is only 8 bits". Any suggestions? Thanks!

playback distortion

I have 400+ CD's and I want to place sound bites in Filemaker to help me keep track.

My Mac-clone system plays CD's just fine but when I use Simplesound (yes simplesound!) to record a segment and then play it back, the distortion is quite high.

It's a 604e200mhz system, 128mb ram, system 8.5, and since it plays cd's and installs programs from CD's without a problem, I cannot figure the problem.

Purchasing additional software or equipment isn't a problem - I just don't know what the problem is.

i am not very familiar with the program you are using to record but... it sounds to me like the recording level in the software app is set ot high you might want to check that to make sure it isnt peaking. hope this helps :()

I am not completely familiar with the application to which you refer, however, you might make sure that your program is playing back the recorded segments at the same sample rate with which they were recorded. Good Luck.

Midisoft file converters?????

DOes anybody know if it is possible to convert midisoft studio files (.mmm) to .wav, or is there any way that I can convert it to a popular format so I can send it to other people to listen to?

Mr. Roger Norlund,

Midisoft Studio also allows you to save your files as a .midi format. This would allow you to send the files, because windows (as default) provides a midi player. The sound of the music will depend on the receiving person's PC. I'm still looking for a way to convert these types of files to .wav. Please let me know if you know a way.

Music Narator Software - Puppet Show Evangelism

May you can help me to choose, the software that I
will use to arrange sound effect in the puppet show.

I have a lot WAVE file that can be use, but I still confuse to arrange them into flow of story.

I try a Cakewalk Pro Audio, but to mix the sound is not easy for timing flow story, because the puppet show is not like a film.

In addition, this project is for kids evangelism in my church.

Elviana,
Since a live show is never going to have
the same timing twice, you will either have to have
someone play the music at certain cues, or simply
loop/extend a piece of music that will last the duration of the
scene, and have someone fade it out when the scene
ends.

Live Wav,MP3, Midi Player Software

I am a pro musician from Australia. I'm looking for a program to playback Wav, MP3 and Midifiles that is geared for live performance. I will be running it on a Laptop P.C. It needs to be easy to read from a distance and have the capability to play sets as well as choose "songs on the fly". It would also be an advantage to be able to choose the next song and wait while the previous song is still playing. If there is not a program that handles all these file formats then maybe I could run 2 programs...One for midi's and another for wav and MP3.

MIDI MAPPERS

I can see an option called "midi mapper" in a number of midi players,
but I have not figured out what this does. Am I missing an application ?

i don't have a midi mapper so my computer is not playing midi files how to install my midi mapper for my computer. i lost my soundcard drivers. mine is intel 810 motherboard and i use the inbuilt soundcard. i don't have the driver cd. what to do?

I have never seen a harder to get program. On MMX I waited 24 hours on download just to get 4 copies all of which were in some fucked up code. Anyone who can get me the new one...I'm make you happy yu did.
