Re: how to convert vhs to vcd
I spent all last week trying to figure this out, and figured I’d share my new found knowledge:
(If anyone knows anything to the contrary, or has suggestions, please let me know!)
First, you need to capture the VHS image onto your hard drive. There are hundreds of capture boards to do this with. I use a Pinnacle DC30plus, but if you're going out to buy one specifically to create VCDs, I'd recommend a Dazzle or Iomega Buzz with on board hardware MPEG encoding, since that's what kind of file you'll want to end up with. Any way of getting an .AVI file onto your hard drive will do.
VCDs are encoded at 352x240 resolution, so you don't need to bother getting your file at much higher quality than that. Besides, that's about the same resolution as VHS to begin with.
Once you have an .AVI file(s) on your hard drive, you'll need to encode it into a VideoCD 2.0 compliant MPEG1 file. This is a specific White Book standard, which is necessary in order to be readable on DVD players. I use TMPGEnc from http://www.tmpgenc.com/e_main.html because it's free, versitile, and reliable. There are several others out there, but make sure they are capable of creating a VCD compatible file.
Last, you need a burning program capable of creating the correct file structure of a VCD. Adaptec Easy CD Creator Deluxe has a good VCD Creator program that will allow you to create menus for choosing multiple tracks. Nero Burn is also a good program to use, but doesn’t allow you to create menus. It does, however, allow you to make an SVCD (closer to DVD quality on a CD, but shorter time/CD. You’ll need an SVCD compliant MPEG2 encoder for this) You can download a free demo version of Nero Burn from Ahead Software to see if it’s what you’re looking for.
One of the issues with creating VCDs is the 2GB file limitation in Windows. What I’ve done to get around this is encode 8-9 minute chunks (<2GB each) separately, then burn them in Nero Burn with the “Pause Between Tracks” set to 0. This works OK, but inserts a single frozen frame when it’s played back which looks a lot like a dropped frame. I’ve tried to chop my projects at fades or transitions to minimize the effect.
