If you want to use your AWE card to generate the .wav then you don't need special software. All you need to do is play the midi files through your AWE card and similtaneously hit record on Windows Sound Recorder which you will find on your start menu under Start -> Accessories -> Multimedia.

lessons,etc now support computer music MIDI format so that it
can be played using the computer as in
PG's Music "BAND in a BOX". I will subcribe if this is true.
If not I will like to this happen someday.

Can't cancel Sysex commands

Ihave been using a Sysex in Cakewalk Pro Audio in order to use a 2nd drumkit on channel 11, but I
can't reset it unless I reboot the PC.
Can anyone help?

I'll try to help you out, though your information is a bit scarce.
Anything you send through sysex will remain in your synth's memory unless you send a reset sysex message.
Every synth or soundcard that responds to sysex has such a reset code.
I suggest you download that and send it to your synth when you want to start with a clean slate.
There is a program called VB sysx decoder (maybe even available at this site) that has a reset utility for GM, GS and XG synths.
I know I'm of not much help right now, but give it a try...

I recently downloaded a bunch of m3u files thinking that they were the same thing as mp3s. I couldnt get them to work on my mp3 player. Do I need to download a m3u player? What is the difference between an m3u and an mp3?

m3u is just the name of mp3 songs to winamp

Follow the directions below to set your default MP3 player for streaming M3U files.

If you are using Internet Explorer (Windows):

- From your Desktop double left-click on My Computer. Click "View" on your toolbar.
- Find "Folder Options..." at the bottom of that list. Select "File Types".
- Click the "New Type..." button. In "Add New File Type", fill in the following:
- Description of type: M3U file...Associated extension: .m3u
- Content Type (MIME): audio/x-mpegurl...Under "Actions:" click the "New..." button. Explorer may recognize this as a current "Playlist" setting. If this happens click "Cancel" in the New File Type box. Scroll through the file types and delete the M3U entry. Try to add the M3U type again. Continue with the instructions below.

In the "New Action" box, fill in the following:
- Action: open
- Application to perform action: "C:\Program Files\Winamp\WINAMP.EXE" "%1"
Above we simply used Winamp as an example. You can type in where your preferred player is (include the quotes), if different, or use the browse button. Be sure to remember the "%1" at the end.

Netscape Navigator (Windows):

- Open the "Edit->Preferences->Navigator->Applications" Dialog.
- Press on the "New" Button.
- Add "m3u" to the File Extension (Suffixes) Field.
- Depending on your current settings, Navigator may recognize this as a current "Playlist" setting. This is normal. Continue with the instructions below.
- Type "audio/x-mpegurl" in the MIME Type Field.
- Find your MP3 Player, such as Winamp, under Handled By Application Window. Press "OK".
- Now, next time you try to play an m3u file it will locate the MP3 Player and launch it.

Note: Once Microsoft's Media Player becomes your default setting it is very difficult to remove. If this happens to you a quick solution is to download the newest version of RealPlayer G2. RealPlayer's insallation will automatically set RealPlayer as the default player for streaming.

Streaming MP3's (m3u format) on the Macintosh with Real Player G2:

Before we get to the instructions about how to configure RealPlayer G2 as your mp3/m3u player, we'll point out some tweaks you might want to consider if your primary use will be as a mp3 player.

After downloading and installing the player, visit the "View" menu and select "Compact". This will minimize the hulking Real Player interface.

You can also turn off individual elements of the interface, such as the "Search" feature, that are rarely used. There isn't a playlist feature that you can use to create a custom list of songs to play in the order you prefer, which most other players have, but there is something called "Playlist" which remembers the trailing 10 songs you have played. It's not as useful as a traditional playlist, but it's handy nonetheless.

Didn't complete my request for info about midi-in.Have a Yamaha PSR-530 set up cablewise to my computer 166mhz pc with a AWE-64 sb value soundcard. Since I installed Win-98 I have been unable to get my sequencer to recognize midi in messages.I use Band in a Box, Cakewalk, Voyetra Orchestrator.I need help . Should I be using AWE 300 in and out or what?

The AWE64 card is useless as a midi device interfaced through a midi breakout box to the joystick port. I had similar problems, so turned off the internal e-mu synth, emptied the soundfont banks, and purchased an 'Opcode Midi Translator PC' unit that interfaces through the parallel port. This was the best investment I ever made for me to connect two midi keyboards to my PC. I use the keyboard sound generators only and do not have any more problems. The AWE64 card has a bad reputation among the music fraternity. It's very good as an internal sound unit, but external midi, forget it. It just doesn't work. You're better off getting a simple 16 bit full duplex soundcard. I hear the Ensonic card is one of the best around. It usually pays to apply the K.I.S.S. principal when mixing complex technologies, such as midi/PC's/Macs. I hope this helps a little bit. Midi is the worst type of computer network to configure properly and is very poorly documented unfortunately.

Splitting .wav files

Depends on what you need to split...

If you need accurate timing splits, Propellerhead's
Recycle! does the trick beautifully, automatically.
Of course, that's somewhat expensive (from my perspective at least),
but I think Sound Forge and Cool Edit let you put markers and
split that way...still costly though...

try GNMIDI at http://www.iicm.edu/Cpub for Win95/Win98/WinNT4
it has a chord guess operation, currently recognizes
Major and minor chords if enough notes are played
in a measure.

The chords are added as text markers into a new track
synchronized with the rest of song. E.g. midimach player
(http://www2.iicm.edu/midiprog) external midi player can
display them live.

it is very cheap shareware:
registration for a keyring only
demo available, free for 5 days

about the same issue this very morning. I gonna
do some planning and maybe I gonna develop
such a program. What do you expect from such an

Something alike already exists, if I'm not mistaken it's called MIDI Chords and can be downloaded at several shareware sites and if i'm not mistaken (again) you can find it HERE at this site.
This proggie extracts harmonies from MIDI files and then makes its best guess to what chords were played most likely.
Sounds great, but it's not, it has the tendency to make an E- chord out a Cmaj7 and so on.
Just sit down at your keyboard and use your mind and ears, that is bound to work much better...:)

Hi!
I just got started on this MP3 thing & i'm still a bit confused. I downloaded a couple of files using CuteFTP & i can play them on WInAmp fine, but how do I keep the songs there once I exit winamp? I keep having to re-open CuteFTP & right click on the songs & select "execute". i guess i'm asking how to generate a playlist. sorry if this is a dumb question, but like i said, i'm very new at this, so please email me personally if you can help me out. thansk!

Would also like to know how to type names of the tracks when they are not included. i.e., Track 1 is listed with out name of song name. I know there is a way to type the names of each track but can't seem to figure it out.

HI. :) I am having a little problem. I haev JUST got on this and I am having a little trouble. I have no clue how to generate a playlist. I am very new at this whole concept of the internet and have no idea how to do anything. My friends all told me that it is a cool thing. I just am having trouble setting up my own playlist. I mean where do I get the songs from and how do I find the songs that I want. If you could get back to me with how I can do this it would really help me out a lot. Thanks. :)

"audiocd mp3 studio", downloadable from www.softseek.com,
and easy to register. It is 7 Mb big, but very usable.
