agree completely!
: : Hi. I'm not trying to start a flame war, but I need your expert opinions on which is better suited for basement studio recordings on a low budget :o This is a gift for my boyfriend, and I only have about a grand or so spend on this. Tell me what you think... PC (less stable) or Mac (more expensive/less options for all-powerful HD) thanks
: :
: I hope this answer won't start a flame-war either, though a good flame-war can be fun at times :)
: I think your best shot would be the PC, 'cos there's loads and loads of relatively cheap or even free software available, and you can asseble a system to suit all your needs at a fraction of the cost (compared to Mac)
: Of course the Mac is a fine machine, but if you want to keep this a low-cost thing and you want to be able to find cheap software and get support from other users (like on this board), go for a PC.
: Any decent second-hand Pentium 166 is a good start, buy something faster if you want to use software synths...
do not agree with this thread of PC info

You can go either route at the same price. A good mac alternative to the second hand P 166 would be a Quadra 660 or 880 A/V, which you could pick up for around $500 (These A/V machines were made especially for Audio and Video but are older and slower and you'd need one with a bigger hard drive and RAM...). Try http://deal-mac.com to find links to such a machine.
There are also plenty of Mac home recordists to consult on various message boards. There is also plenty of free and share ware audio apps for Mac. I like to make Mods and I think the best
Mod program is PlayerPro, which is only available for Mac.... There may be less programs available for mac but more doesn't equate to better.
Audio recording is relatively complicated and Macs are easier to configure and operate....
I'd consider what type of computer experience your boyfriend has. Is he already used to PC or Mac. Most importantly does he know people who do what he wants to do on either platform. In other words he'll probaby need some
guidance, so if all the people who can help him have PC's, don't get him the Mac.
If he has no clue and little help, I'd get him the Mac.

sound cards
A friend of mine told me to forget using a full duplex
sound card. Does this mean I can use two sound cards?
If so, how do I install it on my AMD K6 233 motherboard?
Thanks!
Re: sound cards
Full duplex means, having the ability to record and playback at the same time. I don't know why your friend told you to forget it. A lot of cards are full duplex by design. As for putting 2 soundcards in the same machine, You need to either get 2 cards that have drivers that support multiple cards. Of get 2 cards that use entirely different drivers. I have in my system: A Soundblaster Live (Cool), an AWE32 with 16meg onboard (Noisy) and a yamaha DB50XG (Nice). Hope any of this helps.

:My friend told me to forget using full duplex 'cause I'm likely to get more hiss than music when recording.
What about using generic type full duplex sound cards, are they any good?
Re: sound cards
I don't know what you mean by "Generic full duplex cards" If you mean cheapo unbranded then stay well away. If you are worried about hiss then check out the signal to noise ratio of the card. Anything above 90db is good. Soundblaster live for example is over 100db S/N. you gan crank it right up and it never hisses atall.

Please suggestions on Event Gina
I want to buy an Event Gina card,
but have some questions:
1) Does Gina work together with AWE64,
cause I still need it for MIDI.
(2 Soundcard in one machine ?)
2) DirextX plugins - will they work on Gina
(cause I've heard Event has no
DX drivers released)
3) Have anyone other problems with this card
(Installation, Software compatibility....)
4) Or do you suggest a better studio card ?
Re: Please suggestions on Event Gina
:I have a Gina Card, which I have used with Cubase and now Logic Audio - works great!
No problem with 2 soundcards, as need midi interface.
If I was buying a soundcard now I would buy the Layla card with 8 inputs - very important if your doing multitrack recording and want control over all 8 tracks ie. drum kit. When I bought the Gina , the Layla hadn't been released yet - I am certain I will buy a Lalya in the future.
Re: Please suggestions on Event Gina THANKS !
Thank you for your comments, but there's
one reason why I don't buy a Layla:
I have a 64stereo-channel High-End Mixing console.

How do I go about converting the wav files to cda files with easy cd creator
Re: converting mp3's to cda files
try with mp3 cd maker -mp3 to cda-
this program convert the files and you can record
it in a cd-writter but exist 1 problem:
you´ll need the key to record more than 4 song,
don´t worry exist the solution, search the key in
astalavista.box.sx
and that´s it.
There is a way to: convert mp3's to cda files
change the mp3 file to a wav file then you have to have a cd burner and burn the wav file to the cd and it is automaticaly changed to a cda file.

Re: There is a way to: convert mp3's to cda files
Yes but HOW do you change the mp3 to a wav file?
Re: converting mp3's to cda files
If you use Easy CD creator you can specify wav files to add to the cd as actual CDA audio tracks. If recorded in a single session, these will work in all car and home cd players. As for MP3s, You need to convert them to wav first using an appropriate decompression codec. Any help?

Using Hubi's Loopback device + the virtual MIDI canles is not that hard.
First I suggest you actually read the documentation supplied with the program.
You can try different setups, e.g. using one Loopback terminal as MIDI out for both XGedit and Cubase and then connect this to your soundcards MIDI out using one virtual MIDI cable.
This works fine for me. Anyway, do read the documentation 'cause it's packed with useful hints...
is the PSR77 MIDI capable?
Looking at buying a Yamaha PSR77fe keyboard, but don't know if it has midi ports or not. Does anyone know?

I just got a Lacie CD Burner, and I am trying to make an audio cd from mp3's, so I can listen to it in my personal cd player. For some reason, when I click on the follow ups, nothing shows, so I can't read what everyone has said.
If someone could please email me instuctions on how to make adaptec toast work for me that would be great. I have downloaded MP3 to WAv, but it did not recognize the wav format when I tried to drag the song into the box.

Does anyone know if there is currently software to convert CDA to MP3.
Re: MP3 to CDA using adaptec toast
I have Toast 3.8.2 on a USB iMac with Que drive, I cannont back up my Playstation games, any help?
Re: MP3 to CDA using adaptec toast
You need to convert it to a wav file first. Toast will then burn this as CDA.

What program do you recommend for converting a mp3 to a wav file.

Question about recording a strat in WIN98
What is the best way to emulate a Fostex porta-studio
in the WIN 98 environment ON A NOTEBOOK?
Got it recorded in Sound Recorder, but can I download
synth and sampling and sequencing software somewhere?
If so, then what would an experienced 4 track cassette
recording and mixdown guitar, bass and keyboard playing,
drum track using individual use for the best outcome?
Re: Question about recording a strat in WIN98
I recommend SAW dx 32. It is very simple to use, and small. Behaves very much like a multitracker. ICQ me on 30467204 or e-mail andy.riley@digital.com and we'll talk about software availability ;-)
