I'm getting the "MMSYSTEM002 A device ID has been used that is out of range for your system." error with winamp. Changing it to direct sound under the output causes it to say "a direct sound object could not be created". No sound at all works on my computer. Real player, quicktime, media player, winamp, games, wavs, etc. Any ideas?? Yesterday I put win XP on and even reformatted and it STILL is doing this

i already try different possibilities
1)to remove wave complaint components from multimedia properties->control panel and agian install microsoft MCI components
2)to remove the wave complaint compnents in Win.ini,system.ini from msconfig

All i have mentioned above or failue

Pls reply asap for to solve the problem

Try to reinstall Windows Media Player. It will install a new version of mmsystem.dll which most likely got corrupted. I installed a new version, 7.1, and the problem went away on my machine.

Ok, this is what I did to solve my problem....

Before my problem: I was in ying and yang. Everything was working just fine until I decided to hook my Win98 box to my Linux box. I loaded the drivers for a new Ethernet card and this killed my soundcard. I mean KILLED my soundcard. The drivers were gone ( I couldn't find them ) and the soundcard was removed from the
START | CONTROL PANEL | SYSTEM | DEVICE MANAGER tab - you should have a SOUND,VIDEO and GAME CONTROLLERS inbetween SYSTEM DEVICES and PORTS.

ANYHOW, when I went to run Winamp, I would get the infamous MMSYSTEM002 error.

The Fix:
I went to the soundblaster web site and downloaded the latest drivers for my sound card.
I then took out my sound card and moved it from its current slot on the motherboard into a new slot on the motherboard.
I rebooted which made Win98 to find new hardware. I then pointed the installer to the driver files and PRESTO! My problem was solved!

Don't use the DirectSound solution that some have been offering - thats just a patch to the winamp problem - your RealPlayer will jack on you quick as will anything else you try to push sound through.

One last note - PLEASE make sure that you download the correct drivers for your soundcard! Installing the wrong drivers will keep you in the MMSYSTEM002 error haze!

I hope this helps someone from burning the midnight oil somewhere!

i have a cd with an extension name of .mp3.
i tried to play it in cd rom drive but the error
"MMSYSTEM002 A device ID has been used that is out of range for your system."
keeps on poping.

one more thing is it because my computer doesnt have any sound card.
But my cd rom drive has its own earplug socket.

-------I have the same problem with all of my media devices including aol, but I fixed the winamp problem by going to visualization options, plug-ins, and output. Click on Nullsoft Waveout plugin v2.02 (x86) and click configure. Set the basic setting to your regular device instead of wave mapper. Winamp most likely changed this somehow affecting the play. If this is not the problem, I don't know what is. Just try it. Does anyone know what my problem is?

Eliminate Vocals from Audio CD with PC

I would like to know if there is any software available (preferably free)that can remove the vocals from an audio cd. I would like to copy the audio track to my hard drive in a workable format for editing and remove the vocals and burn the revised track back on to a CD with my CDR.

Thats easy. Download the demo version of cool edit pro (www.syntrillium.com) and theres a channel mixer in there. goto 'vocal cut' and the save it. after that, burn it to the cd. simple!

I know , I know, but yet it's the only way to eliminate vocals at this time.
Of course I don't think it's a very useful way to treat music, the best way in my opinion is to sit down and listen, and then make your OWN interpretation of a song.
But then again, not everyone can do that, can they?
The first thing you need is talent, and no-one can buy that...

What about remixes? Do people who make remixes of certain songs get the original recordings from the artist, or do they have a method of isolating/removing vocals, and other instrument tracks?

Would it be possible to do that on a computer (without the ineffective remove-center-channel method)?

unfortunately that method, while removing the vocals, will also remove anything else that's centre-panned.

Problems w/ audion extraction in Toast

I am currently using Toast 3.5.4 with my Mitsubishi
4x12 burner. When I extract the Audio I get random
pops in the sound even with brand new CD's. These pops
are completely random and can be removed by re-extracting
This is a great inconvenience because I ave to listen to
the whole CD on my computer before recording. Any
solutions?

piano program

Several months ago i heard of a program that makes
a keyboard play many of the notes of a piano as long
as the 'numlock' is engaged (This lets the application
work in the background so other programs can be
working as well).
But i forgot what the name of it was.
If anyone can be of any help as to where i can get
this program, i'd greatly appreciate it.

I'm not trying to start a flame war, but I need your expert opinions on which is better suited for basement studio recordings on a low budget :o This is a gift for my boyfriend, and I only have about a grand or so spend on this. Tell me what you think... PC (less stable) or Mac (more expensive/less options for all-powerful HD) thanks

Thanks everyone! The choice had to be made... I spotted a Powerspec sale at Microcenter. Pent II 400MHz, 10GB HD 64MB RAM, completely set up for audio business for approx $850.00. We B gettin down!

The cheapest MAC was an iMac, and although it looked like I could walk out with the bundle for about a grand, the moniter attached-to-the-system setup had me a bit nervous. Not to mention it did not have as many upgrade options... he's gonna be pluggin lawrdnozwhatt into that thing, so it had better be ready for him :)

So we're getting the Diamond Monster Sound Board he has been lusting over, but other than that, I was able to get him a MIDI interface with the leftover cash, so he's good to go!

I was admiring the Macs, and if I would have had another grand or so, I would have went that route, but to anyone else who is a student or just low on funds... the PC looks like it's the way for now. thanks again everyone for your comments ;p

Good question... I don't know but... an opinion..
yep.

I am currently using a PC...(AMD) and I'm pretty happy with it
(singer/songwriter... home recording with computer)
However from what I've been reading here and there
and it seems to have some credibility is that Intel
would have been a better choice. This is something
I was not aware of when I bought my computer a
few months ago...
Also, ... I haven't used a Mac for recording but
I sure like what I hear about it from others...
the next time I upgrade I'm definitly going to
test run a mac

I hope this answer won't start a flame-war either, though a good flame-war can be fun at times :)
I think your best shot would be the PC, 'cos there's loads and loads of relatively cheap or even free software available, and you can asseble a system to suit all your needs at a fraction of the cost (compared to Mac)
Of course the Mac is a fine machine, but if you want to keep this a low-cost thing and you want to be able to find cheap software and get support from other users (like on this board), go for a PC.
Any decent second-hand Pentium 166 is a good start, buy something faster if you want to use software synths...

I have used a Mac for 10 years. I considered switching to a PC after being persuaded by PC users to try one. So I got one. It's sitting in the other room. I don't know why consumers are dedicated to one or the other, but I am loyal to my Mac -- it just makes sense to me, and a PC? I just don't get it. But I agree with everyone else, if you have never tried a Mac, then buy the PC. It's cheaper and there are more programs written for it. Pc users just don't understand why people buy Macs, and vice versa. A strange phenomenon.
