O.K., Geoffrey, You sound like the guy I want to talk to. I downloaded the Pro Tools Free for my iMac OS 8.6 but when I tried to install it I came up with an error type -39. Since the general consensus is that there is little or no tech support for this software, you got any ideas? Be the cool dude and come through for me, O.K.? (That means I am hoping!)

give me the specs of the amp you are using and how you are connecting it to your computer and i'll let you know if there is something wrong. if there is nothing wrong, i will then ask for more computer-related details.

You might need to change from "Microphone" to "Line" input in the Sound Control Panel (or iMic Control, if you use that). That worked for me, plugging a bass directly into an iBook (but not thru an amp). Good luck.

I'm having a bizarre problem with ProToolsFree software running on my iBook Mac. It is playing back imported sound files at a slower speed. About 30% slower I would guess. The sound files play back fine on the system they were created in. Everything sems set up correctly. I have no idea why it's doing this.

There is something available from Aardvark called the USB3 that has a guitar input that plugs into your USB port. It comes with recording software too. It's about 200 bucks or so, but you might want to check that out.

I had the same prob. I'm running Mac OS 8.6 as well. The problem is EXACTLY that OMS 2.38 has a conflict with Appletalk. Having Appletalk ON corrupts the OMS prefs file (which is NOT in the Preferences Folder, but in the OMS Preferences Folder located in the System Folder.

First, go to the Appletalk control panel and turn off Appletalk. Disable all extentions before starting-up again. After installing Pro Tools, run OMS FIRST. If it freezes, startup again and throw away the prefs file. After OMS runs, go to it's Preferences and tell OMS to turn Appletalk off and leave it off. The file will no longer become corrupted, unless you run OMS while Appletalk is on once again.

It took me more than a week to figure this out as there is a little trial and error involved, but keep trying it's worth it.

I'm having the same problem. One minute my plugins were working, the next I'm getting this 7054 error. I'm running Pro Tools 7.4 on a Mac Book Pro. The plugins that stopped working are all registered and require the hardware dongle to work. I've tried to diagnose the problem systematically and it seems that the USB key is faulty, even though it still shows up under About this Mac>More>USB
Apparently Error #7054 just means "The plugins are not going to work"... um... no shit. Not sure exactly why the iLok just decided to quit, but it is plenty annoying they it did.

Any suggestions besides the obvious "get another iLok key"?

There is a jack converter you can buy at Radio Shack that you can plug your guitar into that will fit into the mic input on your computer. Just tell them what you want to do if you don't see it. It's only couple of bucks. Depending how much you want to get into this, you will want to eventually get a good soundcard. I would consider the whole protools set up which gives you the full version of their software with soundcard and breakout-box (hardware to plug instruments into). The set-up goes for around 700.00 a lot of cash, perhaps, but you'll see when you get into things that you could spend a lot more if you do it in piecemeal and not get something so cohesive.
