Software Description

hard drive lockup

i have a compaq presario 5834, windows 98. my hard drive locks up every 10 minutes or so for about 10 seconds. i've run scans, defragmented, etc. system availability at startup is 80%+. how can i fix this?

You have a bad hard drive, it locks up because the hard drive head is having trouble reading the data sectors on the drive, replace the hard drive.

I have a Presario 5834 which I have owned for over 4 years. From day one it would lock up within a few minutes. Sometimes it would not even finish booting up before locking up. I contacted Support and they told me that I should go in to Task Manager and stop everything except for SYSTRAY and EXPLORER. This to me was an unacceptable fix, but it worked. I also went and removed virtually everything from my Startup. My PC has run fine ever since. Try this before purchasing a new hard drive.

Try downloading the standalone aspi installer from Goldenhawk at http://www.goldenhawk.com/download.htm. I had the same error and this fixed it for me. The cdrwin installation program has the aspi in it but for some reason it doesn't always work properly.

You need to install aspi drivers for windows 2000. Do a search for them on google.

Get the latest aspi32.dll and drop it into the CDRWIN directory. This will work flawlessly with Win2k. Win2k will not use the aspi32.dll inherently because of the Hardware Abstraction Layer.
It's not MS(although I hate them as well), it's not CDRWIN/Golden Hawk Tech(their burning software is small and kicks ass)...it's the bastards at Adaptec who make the aspi.
