Wrong GM patches come forth

Just got back off vacation & turned on the computer. My Apex is giving me strange sounds from the internal Kurzweil synth. Only thing I've done lately is download the Everest Patch Editor (version 1.47) just before I left.

Strangenesses:
1. Within the editor, the little keyboard on screen skips notes, jumps octaves - when I run the mouse pointer across it (unlike my old version).
2. When playing back gm files, certain drum sounds are all wrong, patches all mixed up, etc.

I tried restoring ROM bank from within Everest ( seems like I read that it does that automatically on closing the program anyway?) - but I'm still play everything back with great weirdness. Any ideas?

Re: Wrong GM patches come forth

This is the first time I've heard of this problem.

What do you mean by skipping notes on the little keyboard? Is it like
the notes are lagging behind the mouse?

It sounds to me like a fluke. Perhaps a hard power cycle
would solve the problem.

The only other explanation is that the IRQs have gotten messed up. Check the mouse IRQs and the pinnacle synth IRQs in the control panel.
However, neither Everest nor the installation program does anything to IRQs, so if this is the case, I hope I am not to blame.

Sample Conversion Quality

Hi,
I am seriously thinking about buying an APEX and using Everest for patch loading and editing. I have been curious about one thing though.. does loading other file formats like SoundFonts or converting file formats with Awave cause
any loss in the sound quality of the sample?
Or does loading a SoundFont into an Apex or Pinncale sound about the same as loading it into an AWE64?
I guess I want to know if all those available samples in other file formats will actually sound GOOD and the way they are supposed to sound converted/loaded into the Kurzweil based card..

Thanks very much for your reply!

JL

The digital quality of the sample is perfect. If the SF2 file was recorded on an AWE32, then the original quality probably won't be so good.

However, Everest does not translate all of the parameters such as LFO and Envelopes, so the patches may not be what you expect. I am working on improving this for SoundFont2 and KRZ files.

Any basses?

Does anyone know of good .sf2 .krz slapbass banks?
Or maybe .emb??

does anyone know the slap to the sienfield theme
if you do can you please mail it to me?

Out of memory message

Hi Mark
Why do I get the "out of program memory" message, when trying to load a SF2 sound bank. There seems to be plenty of sample ram left ( 15 Mb).

Best regards Flemming

Re: Out of memory message

There is only 12KB of program memory on the PInnacle and Apex (the Apex Pro has 204KB)

This is incredibly small, but it was done to save a few bucks on the production costs. FOr some reason, the memory on board the MA-1 is also used for the internal processing, so it is somehow "expensive". Don't ask why this is the case, I didn't design the chip.

Hopefully TB will eventually fix the problem by offering a 204KB upgrade.

Under no circumstances should anyone buy a regular Apex when they can buy an ApexPro for just a few bucks more!

: Hi Mark

Program memory and sample memory are diffrent.
Sample memory stores the actual samples, while program memory stores information about the programs like where the specific samples are located in the sample ram, layer info, filter info, envelope info, LFOs, FUNs, etc.

This is why people have been asking TB for a memory upgrade, which TB says they are working on.
Hopefully it will be soon!

One thing You might try to do if a sample bank is to big, is to load it into the scratch bank, then drag over the individual parts you want.

sample preview

mark, thanx for making the pinnacle useful.
a couple of things tho:
once, when previewing the wav's of a large drum kit
pbf. it kept starting over in a loop. i had to close
everest to make it stop (losing the bank i made and
hadn't yet saved- my fault). can you put a stop button
in preview?
also, any way to preview the samples in an emb. bank?

Re: sample preview

I think you mean the preview function in the "Open file'
dialog. Yes, I know there is no "stop button". Putting
in a stop button is a lot more work that you would guess. Putting in the play button was easy by comparison because there is a windows call that is essentaily play("drum1.wav"). It only plays .wav files and there is no easy way of knowing when it finishes.

Re: sample preview

:can you put a stop button
: in preview?

Hi Aaron,
Actually there already is a stop button. It is the little square button to the left of the play button. (Do you maybe still have an older version without the buttons?)

: also, any way to preview the samples in an emb. bank?

Dont know about emb banks though, sorry...

Jacob H.

OOPS! sorry... to the right of the play button... heheh

instant sound library?

Hi all -

Finally got my Pinnacle working ;-), but now I'm wondering how to get some high quality samples loaded with a minimum of fuss, so that I can get back to the original project (that of draining the swamp). The question is: is there a particular format of high quality (ie Roland, akai, etc) sample files that imports easily into the Pinnacle, with keymap, envelope and layer settings intact?
I am in possession of a library of Kurzweil cds, but am having trouble finding a way to import them into my pc, since I don't own a Kurzweil (disks were given by a friend who bought a Kurzweil with no cd drive). And then, if I can find a way to get them into the pc, the question remains as to how long before Mark will have the conversion feature working in Everest. Mark, if I register the product and then nag you on an hourly basis, what to you suppose the arrival date would be ;-)
Thanks in advance for any suggestions...

Re: instant sound library?

THe problem is that the underlying architecture between Kurzweil and MA-1 is different. For instance, the MA-1 allows you to adjust the amplitude of samples within the keymap. As far as I know, the K2000 allows you to adjust the amplitude and pitch of each key (not just keymap range) in the keymap. There is no way of "translating" this, but I could work around it my creating keymaps that have 128 ranges and unique sample headers, but this would probabily fill the 12K of memory for just one program!

I am in the process of writing my PhD thesis, so I don't have a lot of time to work on this stuff anymore, because the deadline is coming soon and writing a several hundred page thesis is not easy work, especially if it is about experimental particle physics.

You can use Awave to convert many formats. As far as reading the Kurzweil CDROMs, I don't know.

Re: instant sound library?

Hi Doug,

Actually the Kurz format import is already working! I have used it in my registered version.
Maybe it is disabled in the unregistered version.

Everest is a great product, with great product support. I highly recomend it.

I think Everest is working now with keymap, envelope and layer settings intact for krz files, but other things like lfos and funs and specific filters (that the pinnacle may not have) I'm not sure can be fully made use of.

Good luck!

Jacob Hargrave

P.S. I think sweetwater sound has some free kurz samples for download.

Re: instant sound library?

Thanks Jacob... That would be great if the program can already convert envelopes - I just couldn't see doing that manually on a three layer 16 meg piano patch. From the documentation it sounded as though the envelope conversion hadn't been implemented yet. And we gather that Mark is hard pressed for free time right now to answer these questions...
I am still working on getting the krz files off the CD. I have a plan to write a duplicate CD, but my scsi card is in the shop, so I wait... ;-)

WAV file import to curent keymap

It could be just me...
Maybe I'm not doing it right...

...but it seems like you have to do quite a bit just to add a stereo sample to a current keymap.

Any way you could make a wizard that would do it?

Maybe just modify the sample store wizard so that you also have the option of also importing to a current keymap... Just highlight the keys you want the sample (or samples [if stereo]) to show up on, then click on the key you want it centered on...and it imports it and maps it out automatically.

This feature would speed up patch building IMENSELY, for me!

It would be great to have this as a command in the drop down menu, when you select part of a keymap in the keymap editor, and then right click.

Thanks!

Jacob H.

Re: WAV file import to curent keymap

Its not that bad right now. You had better start
with a stereo keymap and stereo layer though, otherwise it
is a pain. If you don't have a stereo layer, create
a new one, or merge two layers together.

In the sample editor, click "new" and load all
the samples you want at once.
Then go to the keymap editor, highlight the region,
and then right-click and change samples.

Sugestions?

add a stereo layer first (which is really 2 layers but you only see one). you can't mix mono (1 layer) and stereo (2 layer)
samples in the same keymap.

1.45 problem

now all of my krz files won't load in everest 1.45
when it pops up the window it looks like it's trying to load
the entire 128 GM bank from the krz file which of course it doesn't
have. I have reinsalled 1.45 and reseated the card,
to no avail. are othe people having this problem?
I didn't have it with 1.44. it will however load sf2 files, weird huh.

help

Everest 1.44, now with EMB

he penultimate release, I hope. I implemented compressed EMB files, which reduce file size anywhere from 10 to 70%, with
about 50% typical. I depends on the quality of the data, bass sounds get compressed most, around 65%, while loud snares don't
get compressed nearly at all. Anyways, its all transparent to the user... hopefully. Remember, the compression is not lossy, the
wave data after compression is 100% exactly the same, just like ZIPping the data. Speaking of ZIPping, sometimes you get a few
more percent of compression by ZIPping EMB files, but only like 2-5%.

Here are some hard numbers:

Lee's Drum Kit:

3.58 MB as PBF + WAVs

1.49 MB as EMB

acgtr.krz: (K2000 acoustic guitar)

1.36 MB as KRZ

660 KB as EMB

Hun's Pizzicato Patch:

1.80 MB as PBF + WAVs

534 KB as EMB

Uncompressing is fast, it takes about 15 seconds on my machine to load Lee's Drum Kit. The transfer rate is limited by the MA-1
drivers and hardware.

I also changed the way samples are loaded for KRZ files. Instead of one big wave data file with aliases, its broken up into pieces.
This means you can also extract the data as WAV files and run the Spectrum control on it. I'll implement the same thing for SF2.
Oh, extraction now works fine with stereo samples.

And there was a annoying bug in 1.43: if you saved your EMB file twice, the second time destroyed the file entirely. The format of
EMB files has changed slightly, so old EMB files may have some trouble. Old EMB files were not compressed either, so you
should load and save them to get them compressed.

Apex Multiclient drivers

Will AVM make some multi client drivers?
WHat have they said on the subject?
has anyone tried to use the pinnacle drivers on the
Apex, will they work?

Re: Apex Multiclient drivers

: has anyone tried to use the pinnacle drivers on the

I doubt it. The Apex DOS patch editor doesn't work with the Pinnacle,
and that accesses the card directly, just as the
drivers would.

The Apex Wavetable driver does not access the card directly. It is simply the standard Microsoft MPU-401 driver with the name changed ! If you don't believe me do a file compare on the two files.

However, I have tried the Pinnacle driver and couldn't get it to work. I believe that the Pinnacle driver does access the card directly as the driver would not recognise the Apex as a Pinnacle.

If you want to get a workable multi-client system for your Apex read my previous post on the subject.

Really it is about time AVM wrote a proper multi-client driver but this is just wishful thinking !

1.43 Available

1.43 Supports .EMB files, as well as fixed a major, longlived bug
that sent random midi notes. I'm hoping this fix
will solve many problems at once.

* new feature: load and save EMB (Everest MA-1 Banks) which feature embedded wave data
and also preserve stereo layers/samples/keymaps
* new feature: save .WAV files from any source bank with .pbf files (except ROM)
* bug fix: duplicate program was broken
* bug fix: using .syx files in bank editor caused crash if they were copied
* bug fix: random midi bytes were sent before each sysex message,
sometimes causing very bad things, like volumes to change a lot,
channel 2 going -64 cents out of tune, etc.
* bug fix: Tonal Program Wizard still allowed transposition of +1 semitone, even if the
"don't tranpose up" check box was marked.
* change: loading .apex files does not extract all the .wav files automatically anymore

'nother question

I'm getting this thing to work, but have what you might
consider a naive question:
When I take, say, a tamborine sample (.wav format) and
import it into Everest, assign it a keymap position, then
go into sample edit to match the pitch with the original
wave sample, it doesn't quite cut it. Nor does it A/B
favorably with the original wave, as far as frequency and
"tightness" is concerned. I'm using an Apex Pro with 32 megs of RAM.

Is this just the nature of this particular sound card, or
do I need to learn more about using the filtering functions
of Everest to make it match (waddaya mean - I can't just
load it on my system and have it do all the work for me?!?)

Thanks yet again!

Re: 'nother question

There was a major bug in Everest <1.42 that caused some
really weird stuff to happen. I've noticed
some samples actually sounding different.
You might want to try 1.43 to see if the problem still exists.

The tuning is based on what numbers Everest finds
inside the .WAV files. If they are wrong, then
the pitch will be wrong.

Hmmm...

First, I have a few questions about some of the functions in Everest:

1. Under the sampler editor, what is the funtion of "De-Thump", "1=linear", or "1=16 Bit"?

2. Under the Envelope editing section in the MOD window, there is a box next to the word Linear. What is the purpose of this, checked or unchecked? (It doesn't seem to do anything noticable either way)

3. Under the Pitch window, what function does Exclusive Zone serve?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Okay, so these might seem like pretty basic concepts to some, but I can't seem to find the answer anywhere. Can anyone help me out here?

Another question, about the future of Everest (and Marc, thank you for being patient with these same two questions) Is there any new information on whether Everest will ever be able to edit the effects (reverb and chorus), and will they be able to be assigned to MIDI channels on a per-channel basis?

I keep getting different responses to these (now infamous) questions. AVM told me recently that effects CAN be edited and were assignable on a per-channel basis (and, no --I asked-- not just the send amounts, but the effect TYPE) So, what is the real truth here? Is AVM, once again, exaggerating in cosmic proportions? (BTW: Did anyone else notice that the newer versions to the AVM "Sample Studio", ver. 2.0 and 3.5, were actually still just Beta I ?! Look under the HELP, "about" menu. CAN YOU BELIEVE THE NERVE?? Correct me if I'm wrong, but there is not one thing changed in the latter two versions... Not EVEN the VERSION numbers! and yet they hype it on their web page as being the NEW VERSION TO AVM'S SAMPLE STUDIO. HMMMMmmmmm.

Well, we'll see what happens. I heard from more trustworthy resources that more than likely neither of these things are possibe. But everytime I talk to AVM, they assure me that it is. But.... IBID

Sorry this went on so long. If anyone got down this far, I'd also like to add that I'd really like to switch composition files and/or editor files with any other programers out there. Anyone interested? If so, send me an e-mail, or just post a message on this page.

Thanks for your time.

Re: Hmmm...

: 1. Under the sampler editor, what is the funtion of "De-Thump", "1=linear", or "1=16 Bit"?

dethump is useless in my opinion. it just trims off the first few millisecs of sound.
If your sample is that crappy, you shouldn't be using the MA-1...

: 2. Under the Envelope editing section in the MOD window, there is a box next to the word Linear. What is the purpose of this, checked or unchecked? (It doesn't seem to do anything noticable either way)

to tell the truth, I don't what it does either.

: 3. Under the Pitch window, what function does Exclusive Zone serve?

All layers with the same exclusive number will collectively only play one note
at a time. FOr instance, if you want to have an opened and a closed high-hat sample
cut each other off, put them on the same exclusive zone.

: question, about the future of Everest (and Marc, thank you for being patient with these same two questions) Is there any new information on whether Everest will ever be able to edit the effects (reverb and chorus), and will they be able to be assigned to MIDI channels on a per-channel basis?

i don't know. Its a driver issue, that AVM or Turtle Beach has to sort out.

AVM has told me also that they are editable, and they showed me a
DOS editor that allowed you to edit the filters. Unfortunately, it
is totally undocumented.

Re: Hmmm...

: to tell the truth, I don't what it does either.

My understanding is that it changes the way the envelope works, from linear to exponential. For example, if you make a traditional 4-segment envelope (ADSR), the attack portion will start out slowly, then gradually curve upward to a faster rate. Same thing in reverse on the decay. The effect is a softer, smoother fade-in/fade-out of the sound.

Dumb MIDI question

Although I've been a registered user for a couple of months
(ancient history considering the update rate!) I haven't been
using Everest much due to problems with my Apex card.

I'm finally able to move sounds from my sampler onto my
hard drive. They are already set up from the sampler (keymap,
MIDI channel, etc.) When they come in (via AWAVE) they are
all on the same channel. I noticed the "MIDI Channel Display"
on the Program Editor Page, but there is no associated help file
(or, for that matter, any mention of the View menu in the menu section
of the help file).

How do I reset the individual layers so they respond to the correct
MIDI channel?

Re: Dumb MIDI question

I don't know what kind of sampler you used, but the idea
behind MIDI channels is that you can assign programs
to any channel. Normally, the sampler or synth
doesn't keep track of what program is on what channel.

The way to assign programs to channels is with the
midi "Program Change" command in your sequencer.

I think if you use the context-help "?" button and then click on
the MIDI channel display, it should say something, although maybe
not very much. It just displays the midi channel of
notes that come in from the external midi port.

Usually you would do this in your sequencer.

To do it in Everest: First pick a midi channel in the tool bar, then pick
a program in the tool bar. Repeat for all desired channels.

As usual, I was looking right at it and it didn't register as being there to my
somewhat unobservant eyes. I *said* it was dumb.

This, however, isn't. When I try to use the drumkit wizard, it (as stated in the
help file) arranges it alphabetically. It shows only enough keys to cover the selected
drum (.wav) files. Since I set my drums to GM standards, this isn't always enough, so
I add the Quiet Key to give me more space. Everest crashes every time. It usually gives
the following message:

Any idea on how I can add the additional keys without this happening?

I'm using an Intel Pentium 166 w/32 megs RAM, Matrox Millenium (1) card w/2 megs,

Thanks for the great support.

Problems

Hi there.

When I run everest, an use the bank editor and click on 'copy to mainbank' or 'copy to scratch' I get the message 'Program has performed an illigal action....' (translated from danish). I get the same message other place in the program. I have a PII 233, 64 MB ram, scsi HD, and no IRQ conflicts. Can anyone help. (I'm running version 1.13)

Problem was due to COMCTL32.DLL

Flemming verified that the problem disappeared when
he updated him COMCTL32.DLL. To get the update
from Microsoft, visit this site:

Re: Problems

Hi again.

Sorry, Everest still crash in version 1.40 when I click 'copy to scratch' or 'copy to mainbank'. Any suggestions? Can there be a connection with a problem with Midi input that does'nt work from keybboard?

Re: Problems (fixed in 1.41?)

I fixed a problem in version 1.41 that would cause a
crash like this. Please let me know if this solves the problem.

I highly doubt that the midi setup has anything to
do with this problem.

Unfortunately is doesn't solve the problem. I a'm afraid it's my setup that cause the problem, because I can't get my master volume and wave table volume to work in the windows mixer and I midi in does'nt work either. I just can't figure out what's wrong - I have followed every advise I could get from WWW. Furthermore I cant get Power Tracks Audio to sync between midi and Audi - maybe that because of a poor program. Any idea which seqencer program to buy, that will sync perfectly? Anyway the problem with everest (I can allways drag and drop) is minor compared to my other problems with my hole setup (PII-233, 64 SDram SCSI with Adaptec2940AU, Apex card Matrox productiva G100 AGP).

Re: Problems (fixed in 1.41?)

Flemming,
I'm sure that your set up has nothing to do with it, especially if you
can drag and drop. It is clearly a bug. Could you please
send me an exact way of duplicating the bug? Perhaps you may need to send me
a .pbf bank file (or whatever) too.
