MIDI help needed

I need a program that can identify what the notes are that are playing and turn them into sheet music! I get the part about turning it into MIDI, but where is the program to turn the MIDI file into sheet music? any help is much appreciated. Thanks

Re: MIDI help needed

You'll find programs to do this in the Notation section. Try Music Masterworks out as it does print MIDI to sheet.

Basic keyboard software

I purchased a keyboard for my dad to use with his iMac. Can anyone recommend some basic software he can use to play the keyboard. He will not be sampling, recording, or anything fancy. He just likes jamming! I have iPiano, which is good, but something with a drum track would be better.

Thanks,
Steve

Shoutcast files

I had a folder with mp3's in it. Somehow all the songs were changed with the extension pls. How do I change them back so I can make my own cd's? I don't know much about computers. I did try to change folder options and it didn't work. Please help!! Lots of music just sitting there. Thank you, Traci

Re: Shoutcast files

Try renaming them to MP3. Look here for software to do it for you.

How can I send in demos if I dont have an agent?

I've wrote to many recording labels but they all tell me the same thing. I can't send in a demo unless someone like a prducer or my agent sends it in for me. Does anyone know of a recording label that I can send in a demo to? I have been told to have potential and I love to perform all I need is for someone to hear me.

Re: How can I send in demos if I dont have an agent?

Sorry to bust your fantasy, but simply sending in a demo and waiting for your moment is pretty much a surefire way of waiting around for a call that never comes.

Yes, some artists do get signed this way, but not very often and usually the deal they get isn't the one they originally hoped for.

Labels get overwhelmed with demos at the best of times. The chances are your demo will be lucky to get heard once and even then, your song may only get 30 seconds of ear-time. If that 30 seconds doesn't capture attention, then you go onto the pile.

Get out there and start performing. If you get a following then you stand more chance of getting a deal. Labels sell music. They sign people who are good investments. If you've got a following, you have a market to sell to. Labels are usually more impressed by someone who is performing to audiences than someone who isn't.

There are exceptions to every rule, but don't wait around for your demo to be discovered. Get out there and follow your dream.

Use of Cool Edit

Using Cool Edit is it possible to separate in several tracks a WAV file recorded in Stereo form ?
If it is not possible with Cool Edit does exist the possibility using some other softwares ? If yes what they are ?

Re: Use of Cool Edit

: Using Cool Edit is it possible to separate in several tracks a WAV file recorded in Stereo form ?

The answer is no... Once you have the file in stereo, or 2 tracks, you can't reverse it into multitracks... You just can add FX, like reverb or compression, (or duplicate the channels, but theres no use in doing so)...The only possible thing to have multitracks of a wave file is the source itself...

Re: Use of Cool Edit - initializing

My program comes up with "initializing recording" and "initializing playback" messages in the bottom left hand corner of the screen and won't allow me to do either. How do you get rid of these so that the program works normally?

Re: Use of Cool Edit

I guess it depends on how you interpret the question. I was thinking more along the lines of converting a stereo track back into its original multi-track form.

Lister

Re: Use of Cool Edit

Nope. One music is in stereo it's impossible to separate the various tracks - there is nothing unique anymore to split them anymore.

Well you can split it into left and right - you can then
even create two mono tracks with 180 degree phase shifting, so you
could create 4 tracks - not much use except for crappy
cancelation of centered sounds, but had to put in my $0.02

decision on sequencing program

Hello to all... I am having a hard time coming up with a decision on what to buy in terms of hardware and software for a mini-home studio. I want to produce high quality music such as jingles, web music, etc combining midi and live tracks. Everyone has their own take on what is the best. I don't know if I can afford the G5. Is Logic Pro really better than DP4? Cubase? Thanks in advance!

Re: Recording Software

With 12k you can really go near or all the way pro these days. The
difference between a hit record and demo will be only you talent.

Computers are great and sucky at the same time. They are often consumers
of time beyond what most can stay creative with. Keep that in mind when
you think about your experience and needs.

You need:

A room that sounds good
Mikes to serve the sound you are looking for
Preamps to lever signal strength
monitoring to hear what you are doing and have done
Analog/Digital/Analog (a/d/a) conversion
something to track to
something to mix back through
Peripheral gear to process the signal
something to capture the final mix
something to master your mix to a cd master

A room that sounds good:
The biggest mistake is to buy gear and record in a crappy sounding
drywall room. What you put in never gets better then the original. You
can fix it all you want but it will always be fixed and sound that way.

There are 3 schools of thought on this. You can buy a million dollar
room that sounds great, you can make a really dry room where all of your
natural sounding reverb is added later and you can not care and get
really bad recordings;-)

To make a dry room you don't have to build out a room. You can make
baffles with 2x2's and sound board that you can buy at places like Home
Depot for $6 per 4'X8' and 1/2" wide sheet. You can take 2 sheets and
put dry wall between them, fasten them to a wood 2x2 frame and cover
them with fabric. (air them out for a few days and the smell will go
away) You can put wheels on them and make them with hinges so as to make
wide barriers. You can use thick carpet on the floor and make stands to
hold up draped carpet up near the ceiling. If you need a livelier sound
then you are getting once your room is dead, you can buy a 4' x 8' sheet
of hard wood plywood as a floor to play on (over the carpet). that is
particularly good when recording most strings and percussion.

Your total budget for that part will most likely be less then $1000

Mikes to serve the sound you are looking for
Rode, Marshall MXL, Behringer and AKG make great mikes for small dollars.
You need to look into which ones will best suit your instruments and
style and then learn how to use them

You can probably get all you need there for about $1000 - $1500

Preamps to lever signal strength
You can buy a mixer with many preamps in it or go with some dedicated
pre's. This area of recording is highly debated and you can spend your
entire budget without blinking. I would recommend that you buy a higher
end Behringer or possibly a soundcraft ghost. The boards in-between in
price don't really give you anything extra for the money that the
Behringer won't give you. The ghost is a better sounding board and more
reliable though you probably won't ever need to push the limits. If you
really want to make your life easy and have other gear to play with buy
yourself something from Behringer and probably the MX9000 for about
$1400. it is 48 channels in a split console so you can run 24 tracks in
and out without having to re-patch anything. Your big expense will be
wires, racks and bays no mater what console you buy and you are looking
at several thousand unless you make the wires yourself.

A behringer with all the necessary wiring and a few patch bays will cost
you near $4000

monitoring to hear what you are doing and have done
Crown CE1000 amps are great and low cost ($500) You can go the power
monitor route but since that is not my style I won't advise it. You can
buy some near field monitors like the Alesis Monitor One's for about
$250 and a behringer headphone amp with several individual monitors for
another $140 and 2 sony headphone for another $200 and have your
monitoring set up for $900-$1000

Analog/Digital/Analog (a/d/a) conversion
If you go with a computer you should probably look at the Motu system
for about $800 that you can add onto later. There are several setups
available but the firewire ones are the most expensive. You don't need
it- the PCI card types work great and cost much less for what you get.

something to track to
Going the computer route, you should look at an older Mac like the G4
400 or faster. The older desktop models are cheap and work more then
hard enough to track 32+ tracks at a time. You don't need the latest
greatest. Buy one with tons of memory and get an external fire wire
drive. You're total out of pocket it going to be around $1000 - 1500
depending on where and when you buy. That price should include recording
software and I use CUbase. Cubase is easy and you should buy the 5.1
software that is older and compatible with OS9. Once again, you just
don't need more then that. The cost is very low now that the new version
of SX has come out for os10. You can probably find a computer with
everything already installed.

something to mix back through
If you already have the behringer mixer MX 9000 you are set and the eq
is very good so you don't need anything else for that.

Peripheral gear to process the signal
You probably want some outboard compressors. Lots of people think they
can use plug ins but that doesn't do much for you since you want
everything controlled before the signal gets to a/d/a. I recommend DBX
and the RNC. The RNC's are about $175 and DBX will be more. The RNC is
better but has less controls. You might want both and maybe 2 RNC's.
$600 (buying used DBX) would be expected. You will also want an effect
unit or 2. Behringer is very good there with the DSP2024 for about $140.
One or two of those will do all you need.

something to capture the final mix
using a mac you can come out through your board, back into your motu and
computer for a final mix. You won't have any further expense there.

something to master your mix to a cd master
If you buy Toast & Jam you can master in Cubase and then use jam to
level your tracks and toast to burn your CD's. If you buy a Super drive
from someplace like otherworldcomputing.com you can get it for $99. I
think toast and jam will be about $100 (I've been upgrading for years so
i don't know the actual cost of new)

there you have it. A master quality studio depending on your talent that
will cost about $8540 - $9780 by my math and leaves you a little extra
for my mistakes and opps, I forgots -

Good luck to you and have fun plugging it altogether!

Aarrghhh!!! Frustrating!

Hello All,

Hopefully one of you can come up with a wonderful solution. My problem looks quite simple on the surface...I'm not able to get a MIDI-In (or OUT)signal from my keyboard into my computer. I run win 98se and Cubase VST 5 on my computer and have a soundblaster live card (first edition). Normally this used to work. But suddenly when I wanted to record some notes I had no signal coming in at all. In the meantime I've tried all the obvious; including changing midi cables, reinstalling drivers, changing IRQ through bios and whatmore...
But still it doesn't work...and now I'm out of ideas. Maybe anyone has some new ones?
Or could it just be that the soundblaster midiport is dead?

Greetzz,
Zefira

Re: Aarrghhh!!! Frustrating!

Check the card isnt slightly out of its slot. Unscrew the bracket and push. I had a problem with SB that the bracket was too short to let the card fully slot in the mainboard. Looked in but wasnt. Also try using a joystick and see if that works/can be calibrated.

Owkay, that's the first thing I'll try
tomorrow. Thanks. I'll let you know whether it fixed the problem. ;-)

Hmm...nope...the SB card now is fitting that thight in it's slot I'll probably never get it out again, but it's not the solution to my problem. A joystick I still haven't been able to lend so haven't tried that yet.

Sterio to mp3

Hi People, I am wondering is the panasonic SV-MP31V the mp3 that can record of a sterio?

Re: Sterio to mp3

: Hi People, I am wondering is the panasonic SV-MP31V the mp3 that can record of a sterio?

I believe that while it does play stereo files if you download them from your computer using the USB Transfer Cable that comes with it, it is only capable of doing basic mono voice recording - not really meant to record music - just meant for listening to music.
