The Windows Server 2003 operating system
has Windows 2000's midi installed, and
drivers for onboard sound. But there
seems to be no sound cards for Windows
2003 and also there is little
information on success with drivers.

A Yamaha YMF719E ISP PnP sound card can
be made to play Midi music in a 2003
Windows 2003 operating system, by
copying these files from a Windows 2000
operating system

* opl3sax.sys (54,960 bytes)
| Location: \WINDOWS\system32\drivers

* wdma_ymh.inf (8,357 bytes)
| Location: \WINDOWS\inf

The control panel "Add Hardware" feature
installs the Windows 2000 driver.

Then "Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth"
is selected in the Control Panel's
"Sounds and Audio Devices" icon thing.

A minor problem missing from Windows
2000, is that whenr the mouse let go of
the "Volume" slider of the "Volume
Control", then there is a beep.

Using Windows 2000 sound drivers in Windows Server 2003: 350MHz

More details.

There is one major problem with using Windows 2003 with an old Yamaha OPL3 719F ISA sound card: it uses too much of the CPU power, e.g. 350MHZ for many midi and MP3 files.

25% of that was being used by "Sysfader" of "explorer.exe" (says Taskinfo2000 (Taskinfo2003, www.iarsn.com)).
If the CPU has less than 550MHZ then Windows 2003 might not have good enough sound (unless there is good onboard or etc.).

I had DirectX 9 installed.

Microsoft has yet not certified any sound cards for use with Windows 2003:

Possibly tons of readers got a copy of Win2k3 using Shareaza. Otherwise it could seem insensitive to write about pricey options to Yamaha card owners.
