Cost
Hey! You're lucky! At least you were able to find a price somewhere! If I have to dig this hard to find one, I'll just look for a more userfriendly product, because if you can't find the price easily, then the .doc probably isn't much better.
Too bad...
Restoration of old recordings
Sound Laundry looks interesting; how much does it cost? I need an
editor to restore 33 1/3 and 78 RPM recordings, mostly speech. Major
problem is scratches and pops, but recording has significant high
frequency noise and some rumble. In addition, there is a large volume
difference between interviewer and interviewee. Have purchase
"Adaptec Easy CD Creator Delux Edition v3.5," but do not hear any
significant improvement when the automatic restoration features are
used, nor can I hear much difference when the graphic equalizer is use
in Adaptec's Sound Editor program. My best results have been by first
adjusting the bass, trebble and loudness controls in my 28 year-old
preamp to produce the clearest speech before recording the wave file,
and then using the sound editor to view the file and cut out the sharp
discontinuities from scratches manually, 0.1 milliseconds at a time.
I'm looking for something faster and better.
Thanks! Norbert Thonnard
Re: Restoration of old recordings and Other Stuff
Two Utilities I have found helpful:
- CD Spin Doctor seems to have been specially made for repairing the sound from old vinyl records. It was part of Easy CD Creator 4, but was no longer included in version 5.0.
- CoolEdit 2000 is a wonderful Sound file editor by Syntrillium Software. It is not inexpensive, $69 for the regular edition, and $250~ for the full Pro edition. It takes all sort of plug-ins, and cleaning up old recordings is one of their specialties. It seems to be the paragon of editing software out ther.
For me SpinDoctor does about 75% of what I would want form CoolEdit, and really fits my needs given that the TrunTable, PickUp cartridge, and even the Sound Card are often the weak links in the chain.
Completely aside now...
I new a Norbert Thonnard while I was in the 4th through 7th Grades, in Elementary School. It was an American School for ExPats in Barranquilla, Colombia. We were good friends and messed around with rockets and all sort of science related stuff. Would you be the same person? If so drop me a quick email response. I would enjoy cathcing up.

- I don't think you can find this program in stores...it is shareware..you have to download off this site..then decide if you want to buy a registered version. Usually the unregistered versions of all these programs only perform a portion of what they can do. Once you buy the program it will do all that it says it should.
I use Groove Mechanic to clean my vinyl LP's and transfer to CD's. It works GREAT! Gets me CD quality sound.

- I have tried quite a few demos before deciding to buy Groove Mechanic. I found this product to have the best results. I have some old LP's dating back to 1970. You can imagine the defects! Groove Mechanic has been able to get me CD quality sound. I was absolutely amazed at the results. The best part is the program is very easy to use. Unlike most of others GM has presets for Click, Rumble, Hiss and Pops. You don't have to sit for hours trying to figure out what level works best. One LP takes about 1 hour to completely transfer to CD..it's that easy! I challenge you to find a better program to remove unwanted noise from LP's. Unless you buy the program it will only de-click 2 minutes of audio. Other than that it is full function shareware. It costs $50.00 US for the full program, I highly suggest you buy the program. For the amount of LP's I had the $50US was nothing.
Good luck!
Re: sound editers
Try Wave Repair 32. It is $30 and you can download it from "homepages.nildram.co.uk/~abcomp/Lp-cdr.htm". This web page also has a good review of various audio restoration software packages. It allows you to remove pops and clicks from wav files. It has a real time automatic declicker and realtime equalizer. It allows you to manually redraw the wave to remove each individual click. Therefore it is very tedious to use and very time consuming but the results are very good. Also, it does not remove hiss or crackle but it can be a valuable addition to your audio restoration "toolkit". I do not think you will find any one software product that will give you CD quality sound from LPs. Good Luck. Cameron Huiting

Sound Laundry
A pretty impressive product, but a bit too expensive for what I
want it for -- re-recording a few old vinyl LPs.
Could you not produce a cheaper and more limited version aimed
at such users?
