Muse music notation editor is no longer available
We have left this page here for anyone still using the software who want's to use the comments area below
Low cost notation editor. Create, play, edit or print music. Automatically generate guitar tab from notation. Handles ABC folk music notation (the Web has many thousands of tunes in this format). Very easy to install and use.
It shows you the music in standard (5-line) notation. or tablature (guitar, mandolin, anything).
It plays the music via MIDI (you need a sound card that does MIDI, but most of them do). A dialog box lets you choose between internal and external synthesisers or between cards if you have several.
Up to 8 parts with different instruments play simultaneously. You can select any part or parts to be displayed and any part of parts to be played. If there are several parts displayed then the notes are aligned vertically so that notes which sound simultaneously are displayed underneath each other.
Guitar chords can be written by name (e.g. Em7) and they play too. If you don't want the chords to play then there's an option to turn them off. Some sample guitar chords are A, Bm, C#7, Dbm7, E-, F#+, Gb6, A!, Bbmaj7 There doesn't seem to be much agreement in the musical world as to how diminished or augmented chords are written so Muse allows diminished chords to be written as (say) G#0 or G#dim or G#- Augmented chords can be written as (say) Bb+ or Bbaug
You can set any part (or any part of any part) to play on any MIDI instrument. If you don't bother to specify then it will play using the default instrument, and there's an option for you to alter the default. (Different synthesisers can sound quite different for instruments with the same name, and although there is a standard (called "general MIDI") for which instrument has which number, not all synthesisers comply with this - so an instrument number that might be (say) "tuba" on one synthesiser might conceivably be say "applause" or "squeaking floorboards" on another. So you can enter instruments by name or by number).
Even without the help file the program is easy to use but there is a comprehensive help file which explains many details of how to get the best out of it.
Some of you may know but others may not, My name is Rachel and I am Laurie's daughter.
Laurie was killed in a road crash on 23 November 2002. Since then, my mother and I have been providing identifiers for the Muse software free of charge as Laurie is no longer around to administer software updates.
If you would like a free password, please contact musements@tcp.co.uk and we will provide you with the passowrd to unlock all of the functions of the program.
Password
I put a message on this board asking about getting a password and it was removed. Does that mean free passwords aren't being given out anymore?
Re: Password
Have a look at this comment, it may help you out - http://www.hitsquad.com/comment/234801/

Password for Muse program
I have been using Muse for a couple of weeks and want to continue beyond thirty days. A message I sent to the address in Rachel's posting came back as undeliverable. What do I need to do to continue using Muse?
Thanks for whatever help you can give,
Paul
Re: Password for Muse program
Looks like you just may be out of luck dude!
don't buy this program
if you want to pay $40 and not receive a registered version of the program go ahead, buy this program. It's a scame, so don't get sucked in. I sent my check 6 weeks ago, and I haven't received a password to register!!! If you're looking for EXCELLENT programs, buy Cakewalk or Finale. It's around the same price and offers much more.
Re: don't buy this program
Hi
I am the daughter of the program's creator, Laurie Griffiths.
I am sorry that you didn't receive the identifier to unlock the programs functions. I am sure that we would not have cashed your cheque without sending the identifier.
Let me know if you would like a registration code as they are now free.
Rachel Griffiths
registration code
Hi Rachel Griffiths,
(In searching Laurie's name, I just read about the car accident a few weeks ago.)
I have been exclusively using muse.exe since about 2000 for writing
my music compositions and printing sheet music.
I especially like the way it draws the notes on the page.
My computer was destroyed three months ago and I have been having
trouble running muse.exe on newer systems.
I would like to try using the free registration code you offered
to see if it will help.
Sincerely,
Erik Bergren
My email
My name is Erik Bergren.
My email is:
erikbergren@yahoo.com
I would like a registration code if possible.
notation
Greetings!
What I'm looking for is a very simple notation software program. In order of priority, I want to be able to take my mouse and imput notes and rests onto a 5 line staff (I do not have a midi keyboard right now), then add text and guitar chords, and finally print the whole thing out on paper. Is your software for me?

muse
Dear Laurie:
I have owned an old version of MUSE for some time. Last January 1st my computer went down and it is only back to me today. However, all my files were trashed (virus). I would like to have an updated version of MUSE and am willing to pay for it again. Please advise as to what I should do. Thanks.

download
Is there a way for me to download to the United States? When I tried it gave me the location choices of United Kingdom or United Kingdom.
Thanks!

The best email alias for most Muse purposes is now musements@tcp.co.uk since we arrange for someone to monitor that when I'm on holiday or whatever.
Muse support, new versions
After being somewhat inert for a while (during which I endeavoured to become a school teacher, sailed across the Atlantic etc.) I am now working rather more on Muse. I did produce several new versions during that time (and one due out real soon now). The improvements mainly focus on ease of use. Lots of people have told me that it's really good for some time, but I am just beginning to feel that way myself.
The new version will allow proper editing in right-justified mode, more in-place editing of symbols via right-click menus, more in-place adjustment via ctrl+arrow keys and better context related help. There's also a few tidy-ups in the printed score appearance.

the evaluation copy does not work... one evidently needs things which are not provided. that might not be a problem if some indication of where/how the missing ingredients could be obtained, but no such help is given. also, instructions are inadequate as they indicate to "install..." but give no hint as to how that may be done.
Re: muse
The readme file does tell you how to install it. That's why it's called readme. For good measure it also tells you on the muse home site download web page
http://www.musements.co.uk/muse/download.html
The evaluatioin copy *does* work - at least that's what hundreds of other people have found.
We support the product by email and would have welcomed contact.
Muse up-date
Dear Laurie,
About a year or so ago I purchaed from you your Muse Notation program ($35.00). I've used it almost exclusively (even though a litle flakey)because I've
never found a better program -- or one as good! It looks (from your Home Page) that you have made some improvements -- and I would like to up-grade.
I have a serious problem -- in that I recently purchased a new computer. When I copied the Muse program and files onto the new computer, it took me back to an original program
which has no features.
I hope you have records showing my purchase of this program -- and I would appreciate any help you can give me
so that I can get my regular program back -- and possibly up-grade it if you have made any improvements.
Thanks.
Bill Fuller
Re: Muse up-date
1. Can do (without checking my mail archives I probably *did* do so months ago)
2. The current version has a better password mechanism that obviates the need for this sort of resuscitation.
Chords/key signatures not printing
I am using the demo and plan to buy *IF* some of my questions
can be answered/fixed.
When writing a bass cleff chart, the chord changes do not
print.
Sometimes, the key signature does not print.
I am using NT40sp4.
Can you help, Laurie?
Re: Chords/key signatures not printing
Probably what's happening is that no text in the system font is printing. This used to happen on a few systems and I believe that I have fixed it.
Best solution is to pick up the latest version. A bypass without doing so is to set the font scaling factor (in the options menu). it probably had the value -1. 100 is a sensible value.

Can you tabulate slides etc. on muse
Before I decide to pay for this program I want to know if you can tabulate slides, hammer on's, pull off's and sweep picking.
Jeremy
Re: Can you tabulate slides etc. on muse
Not to my satisfaction (I'm working on it).
You can add text (such as "h" for hammer) anywhere you like, including right next to the fret number, but I'd like to see something cooler.
Please help - cannot input multi lines of lyric
Hi, I try to input more than one line of lyric under the same line of notes.
Is anyone know how input them, please show me how. I really appreciated.
Thank you
Phamk
Re: Please help - cannot input multi lines of lyric
If you want multiple lines for multiple verses - alas, you can't because I haven't programmed that yet! Sorry. It's on the list of things to do, but I can't make any promisses as to when.
Laurie
Trial version too limited!
The trial version will let me do "Mary had a little Spam",
but says a simple 12 bar blues is "too long",
that is unless I register! FAT CHANCE! Too GREEDY, too
SOON! I'm looking for a FAST, EASY, program to print out
music for my guitar students, and don't mind paying for it,
but ONLY after making sure it will do what I need it to do!
Anyone know of one that works for melody, chords (including
rhythm ), and maybe tab? MIDI crap not necessary (it's OK
for "test drives" but not much else! Jim
Re: Trial version too limited!
Not so! It gives you a 30 day free trial before you have to pay.
It starts off with the limitations present so that you can see what will happen eventually if you decide not to pay. You can display or even edit music, but you cannot save, print or play anything significant.
If you take the 30 day free trial then ALL the restrictions go away IMMEDIATELY and you have 30 days to make your mind up. If you decide not to pay then the restricitons will reappear.
Lance M are you there?
Thanks for your note. I tried to reply to your email but it bounced. Your return address was given as rrmiller@intrepid.net Can you give me a better address?
The essence of my reply was that if it's working and you are getting your 30 days then don't worry about the message.
MUSE - Could not download
The zip file downloaded but was corrupted and would not unzip. I will try again later.
Re: MUSE - Could not download
The alternative download location is
http://rhythm.harmony-central.com/~ftp/software/windows/guitar-bass/muse0.exe
Re: MUSE - Could not download
I have checked that the file on the web is good. I guess the problem was somewhere between you and it. The download page also has a link to a second download site which is in the USA. Hope this helps.
If the worst comes to the worst I can e-mail you a copy!
MUSE
I'm trying out the program. There was no info given as to cost,US dollars.Access prog only said low cost.
I'll have more questions soon.

Jerry George
Re: MUSE
Cost is 10 pounds sterling, That's about 17 US dollars, about 20 Australian dollars. Pay by credit card, cheque (costs more for non-sterling cheque) or IMO. Full details in help file.
Jerry - sorry I didn't see this to reply sooner. Glad you got through to me by fax. Incidentally I have had many attempts to e-mail you but they all bounced.
