You will need WinZip or a similar program to decompress your driver download.
WinZip version 9 .. Free 21 day evaluation at http://www.winzip.com
Link below actually starts download of WinZip.

When installing, choose "WinZip Classic", then "Express Setup".

I suggest you start at this page at www.driversguide.com

Choose "Install/Reinstall Drivers".

Restart computer.

I got an error message after restart, but I clicked "ok".

After about 6 restarts, the error went away.

Try going to www.DriverGuide.com and downloading ESS Allegro MPU-401 compatible (WMD) driver. It took a little searching to find it on the site (1) and they have a crappy "You Must Free Register to use" requirment (2). However, it did work for me. I downloaded the zip file, unzipped it, and then ran the setup application (there was a "cannont open file" error(I just clicked OK and moved on with no ill after affects)) and restarted my machine. The setup procceded as normal when it rebooted and used my original drivers for the device (3), which for some reason was not working for me before.

(1) At www.DriverGuide.com
click on Driver List (at the left hand side)
click on ESS Technologies Drivers (alphabetically)
click on page 7
scroll down to ESS Allegro MPU-401 Compatible (WMD) and click

(2) When you register make sure to click off all the crappy "Would you like to take a survey" check boxes as to limit the amount of spam that is sure to follow

(3) My computer is an older compaq. It had the Allegro drivers on the restore disk, but would not recognize them.

I've got the same problem. Is yours a Compaq 7477 machine? Mine has been nothing but trouble, I've got a German machine now - its brilliant. The fix I need is for the Compaq!
