Software Description
Some features of Coaster:
- Creates files in uncompressed AIFF format, suitable for processing in Sample Editing Software or burning Audio CDs
- Runs on 68k Macs (requires processor Motorola 68020 or higher)
- Can record in background extremely well by using variable-sized record buffers
- Provides Headroom display
- Sound feedback for clipping
- Records all settings in the application's Preferences file
- Restores Sound Input Device settings to original values when closing the Record window or quitting
- Automatically splits up recordings into several files during recording if level drops below specified level for a certain duration
- Adjustable prerecord feature on resuming the recording
- Eliminates clicks at the beginning and ending of recordings by searching zero crossings
- Supports Gain and Stereo-Gain setting on Macs supporting that feature
- Balloon Help in all Dialogs and Menus
- Rudimentary AppleScript support (incl. a "Timer Recording" sample AppleScript)
- Save and restore complete recording settings to and from files
New Feature: Repair Recording. If a recording is not closed properly (e.g. due to a crash of the system during recording), you can now try to repair it using "File / Repair Recording...". Choose the latest temporary file Coaster was recording as the one to repair (you may rename if you like). A dialog appears to set the sound parameters; you probably will not need to change these (they are retrieved directly from the damaged file). Click "Repair" and the file should now be playable e.g. with QT Movie player. This has only been tested briefly - please let me know of any problems with this function!
OS X ?
I've used Coaster for years on my iMac running OS 9.1...it's the best! My questionis this: will it work with OS X? I really appreciate any info. thanks, SDA
Burn CD favorites
Copying a track or two each from several music CD's to create a "Favorite Tunes" record for personal use seems to me a moral and right sort of thing to do since I bought all my CD's fair 'n' square.
But it seems to be prevented by anti-copy measures.
Anybody know how to do this?
Thanks,
Graham
Deleting Recording
First and Foremost, Great Application! Exactly what I was looking for. Thanks!
The following suggestion is meant as a compliment and is out of care for the excellent program.
When I delete a newly recorded file manually, i.e. not through coaster "delete" button, coaster does not recognize that the file is gone and asks me if I want to delete it. If at this point I attempt to delete it through coaster there is an error. I then have to return the file from trash and delete it though coaster to get rid of it. This is a bullshit nitpic of the anal kind.
Stuffit problem
My StuffIt won't open Coaster. It seems like exactly the program I need. Any ideas? I hope I haven't posted this twice.
Coaster 1.1.3 is great
I'm turning my vinyl library into mp3's and Coaster is the
perfect tool. I've given up trying to have it recognize the
track changes because the noise level between tracks is not very low or long but I don't mind listening to the lp's and making
the file changes manually. Thanks for making it available to the world!

I'll add my 2 cents -- Coaster is great. I'm still using it on my Mac Classic, just wonderful, easy to use and very reliable. Thanks!

Low memory!!
For some reason- once I've recorded about 20 min. of music into a file- I get an warning message that states my memory is becoming dangerously low. Naturally, simply in displaying this message, the computer discontinues the recording. Virtual memory was turned off so I can't really tell what the deal is. Simplesound has always worked fine. Any ideas????

The issue is occurring due to low system resources while performing the writing process. The issue is similiar to the case of buffer underruns. The issue can be resolved by optimizing freeing system resources before performing the writing operation and disabling DMA for the CD/DVD-Writer drive.

Thanks for the answer, but what does "optimizing freeing system resources before performing the writing operation and disabling DMA for the CD/DVD-Writer drive..." in terms of click by click instructions of how to do it????

pretty good
i tried this breifly several weeks ago, recording a couple of vinyl LPs to CD. worked brilliantly.
especially the button for cutting the tracks up while recording.
all it needs is a way to automatically determine the cut-off level for new tracks and it'd be perfect.
if i have a need to convert many more vinyl, i'll certainly choose this again.
the fact that its freeware and of good quality makes it unbeatable imho

Vinyl! That's exactly what I need this software for! Awesome!
