Software Description

CDex can extract the data directly from an Audio CD, which is generally called an Audio CD Ripper or a CDDA utility. Of course you can do that also by recording through your sound-card.

However, recording by sampling the signal with your sound card implies that the signal is first has to be converted to an analog signal by the CD-ROM, which is fed into the sound-card and digitized by the sound-card.

In practically all situation the quality of the recording will be deteriorated (unless you have a CD-ROM that has a digital output of course). CDex on the other hand, is reading the digital audio data directly from the disc, which can be stored in either a WAV file or a MPEG (MP2 or MP3) sound file.

CDex

I got sick of WinDAC corrupting my registry and causing
page faults and system crashes every time I used it.
So I went looking for a replacement and recently
found this. So far I am very pleased. It is simple to
use and seems to function well on my machine, and the
price is unbeatable. Plus I never expected to be able
to extract CD audio from my Sony drive, since it's not
supposed to support it. But it reads much faster than
my recorder and takes the burden of that task off that
drive which is of course a good thing. I suppose it
has to do with the Adaptec software which is already
present on my system. There was a weird anomaly which
appeared when I was first configuring the application,
and seems to appear whenever there is no disc in the
drive, which is that the gui functions with a delay of
several seconds, but this doesn't appear to have any
effect on performance. My thanks to the programmer, it
is a good product. I'm sure it could bring a profit but
I am glad I was able to get it while it's still free.

Re: CDex

After using the program a bit more I noticed I was
frequently getting clicks in the audio, especially
at the beginnings of tracks. When I view the
waveforms close-up, the clicks appear not as
spikes but rather as abrupt changes in amplitude
between adjacent samples. In my best layman's
terms, this would lead me to guess that the read
overlap is misaligned. So I disabled the jitter
correction and this helped a lot; reducing the
read sectors value to about 50 helped more.
Perhaps the default settings should be changed,
or maybe this drive I'm using is not typical.
Still, I suppose some tracks will just not read
properly no matter what, and need to go through a
sound card. I remain perplexed by the delay in the
response of the GUI whenever a disc is not loaded
or not recognized, but this is not so much an
obstacle as an inconvenience. At least nothing has
crashed so far when I've used the program, which
is a major benefit.

Re: CDex

Sounds to me you need several upgrades, and none of them software ; )

Re: CDex

There are tips in the help file for configuring
the CDROM Settings. I found what appears to be the
last version CDEX100b8.zip, which has support for
external MP3 and VQF encoders. However, the
address on Geocities is gone and has recently been
taken up by another user. It appears the author
made many nice improvements, then abandoned it. I
haven't checked the older versions for an email
address yet.

CDEX requires ASPI drivers, even if you're using
an ATAPI drive. If you happen to be using NT 4.0
and can't find the Adaptec drivers, Gibson
Research provides a really nice package. Their
site is http://www.grc.com.
