Software Description

Powerhouse all-in-one multimedia software offering conversion, ripping, editing, recording, burning, playback (including full playlist and full screen video support), and much more. Powerful, yet easy to use audio, video (VCD), and data CD/DVD burning are all fully supported. Other advanced features include video capture, video creation/combining/extraction, video editing, batch video processing, media management, audio merge, MusicID audio recognition, lyrics search, audio tag editing, CDDB/CDDB2/FreeDB support, and more. The audio content of video files can be extracted and saved to sound files, and frames can also be extracted to images files in batch mode. Video files can also be created from still frame images and/or other videos.

Supported conversions include: CD to WAV, MP3, WMA, and OGG; MP3/WMA/OGG/WAV/AIF/VOX/MP2/MPC/G.72x/AU/RAW to MP3/WMA/OGG/WAV; WAV/MP3/WMA/OGG to CD burning, WAV/MP3 Compression, and two-way conversions among MPEG-1, MPEG-2, AVI, WMV, Multi-Page TIFF, and FLIC. MPEG options are available for VCD, SVCD, and DVD compliant output. When converting from audio CD, track information can be dynamically downloaded from the CDDB and used to automatically name saved files.

Video editing is available for AVI (uncompressed), AVI (compressed using any available codec), MPEG-1, MPEG-2, WMV, and ASF. Comprehensive video editing operations are provided (delete frame, delete selection, crop, resize, rotate, mirror, flip, trim, text overlay, adjust audio volume, etc.). In addition, an extensive list of over 30 effects and color adjustment operations allow for powerful video enhancement and alternation. WAV, WMA, and MP3 audio files can be inserted into the video or extracted from the video; and BMP, GIF, JPG, PCX, PNG, RAS, PPM, TGA, and TIF are the supported image formats that can be inserted or extracted. Most video processing operations can also be performed in batch mode on a list of video files using the software's Batch Video Processor

Re: WMV to avi or mov?? microsoft have the answer

: : What is "Graph Editor"? It's actually GraphEdit and it comes with the Microsoft DirectX 8 SDK, which you get with MSDN or download from Microsoft's web site.

: : It lets you see and alter the path of software (codecs and drivers) used to read and play or write a multimedia file.

: : When I get GraphEdit, what do I do?

: : 1) Use the File->RenderFile menu option to load in a file.
: : 2) Remove the last two "filters" (or software components) from the graph. These default to your sound card driver and your video card driver. We don't want that, we want to convert to a different file format.

: : We'll do AVI, because that's what you'll want if you're using AVI editors to edit the movie.

: : 1) Use the File->RenderFile option and choose your ASF file (can use WMV, etc)
: : 2) The default graph is built for you
: : 3) Delete any filters after (but not including) the Windows Media Audio Decoder filter
: : 4) Delete any filters after (but not including) the ASF ICM Handler filter
: : 4) Insert a new filter (Graph->InsertFilters) called "AVI Mux" from the DirectShow filters section
: : 5) Link the ASF ACM Out to XForm In of Windows Media Audio Decoder
: : 6) Link XForm Out of Windows Media Audio Decoder to Input 1 of AVI Mux
: : 7) Link ASF ICM Out to Input 2 of AVI Mux.
: : 8) Insert a new filter called "File writer" from DirectShow section and choose a file name
: : 9) Link the AVI Out of AVI Mux to the In of your file writer
: : 10) Right-click the AVI Mux filter and choose Properties
: : 11) Choose the Full option of the Interleaving section and click OK (this makes the sound and video match up and is the whole point of the AVI format)
: : 10) Press the play button
: : 11) Wait until the play button is active again - this means the thing is finished (you can right-click on AVI Mux and look at the Current Position and Duration count to see how far in seconds the conversion has progressed during the conversion)
: : 12) Have fun editing your AVI

: : NEVER a good sign.

microsoft sucks

i found that i could play WMV files only in Microsoft's Media Player 7... now that i got a WMV8 file and it wanted to update my codec, it has slowed down heaps and cant cope with full screen anymore.. mind you... the quality increase wasnt worth the extra CPU time.. but that is what we have come to expect from microsoft anyway.

I tried to find a program that could convert WMV files to MPEG-1... you think i could ? none at all.. seems microsoft arent letting anyone have the codecs

someone should decompile media players WMV codec and make a converter hehehe

maybe i should :P

anyway if anyone can find something that could do the trick - WMV to AVI/MPEG-1/MPEG-2 please let me know ..

cheers,

- dean

Re: microsoft sucks + powerpoint > asf

Dean

Just wondering if you've found
a converter for wmv8 files yet.

I found one but have not been able
to get it to work properly.

I'm about to try a piece of software
that says it will convert. Showshifter.exe
I am skeptical though

Does anyone know how to convert a powerpoint
presentation to ASF or any easily editable
format?

Re: WMV to avi or mov??

there is no decoder to break wmv to avi but there is an encoder that will conver avi or mpg to wmv wmv has great high res. capabilities but as it has been stated recently there is not a standard for the web that can be used by all the browsers
ie...Netscape, Microsoft, Opera, and others. so why is it so hard to create a medium that could be standardized for the web or even for presentations using powerpoint or publisher. well as long as microsort runs everything there will never be a standard. microsoft must compete with everything and everyone must compete with microsoft it is a losing battle and until it is done there will be no standard for the web or for any digital media.

Microsoft has a patent on the file format and has reportedly threatened authors of WMV-to-AVI translation tools with legal action, making third-party solutions to this problem difficult to obtain. Faced with legal pressure, the author of VirtualDub, for example, says he has been forced to drop support for the WMV/ASF format he developed by reverse-engineering Microsoft's code. Look for version 1.3c or earlier of the VirtualDub program for ASF-to-AVI conversion capabilities.

Re: Smile very simple to convert wmv to avi

Here is a link to a new utility that I found that works extremely well in conversion from wmv to avi.

STOIK VIDEO CONVERTER DLOAD SITE:
www.simtel.net/pub/pd/58950.html

You can still use the digtv application to convert, however, as I stated in an earlier post back in March, this converter is very unreliable(I've only been able to convert one wmv while using it) and when it does produce an avi video, the quality is very poor.

if neither of these applications work for u just follow the instructions in my "THE EASIEST WAY TO CONVERT WMV TO AVI" post. Good luck.

Re: WMV to avi or mov?? asftools.exe

look for a program called "asftools.exe" on google or somthin. once you get it and install it, open your wmv file and on the left side click on "advance" and then the tab "convert to avi.

Then screw Microsoft!!!

If they're gonna threaten folks that want to convert their proprietary .WMV format to what everybody else wants, then we should have nothing to do with the format.

Screw Windows Movie Maker. Sure it comes free with Windows ME. But if I have to get everyone else to use Windows Media Player 7.1 to view my movies. Then then forget that. Microsoft won't even allow upgrades to Windows Media Player 7.1 on Windows 95. When I play these .WMV files on the older version, I get a CODEC error and can't see the video.

What else is out there on the market? I'll be happy to recreate my Digital movies directly into another format.

Re: WMV to avi or mov?? Here's the link for Virtual Dub

I just tried using 1.3c build 11759 and it does not have the ability to open asf or wmv... it states that it has been removed at the request of microsoft.

Re: WMV to avi or mov?? Here's the link for Virtual Dub

: I just tried using 1.3c build 11759 and it does not have the ability to open asf or wmv... it states that it has been removed at the request of microsoft.

I had also tried to look for earlier version, anything before 1.3 cannot open ASF.

Theres a program called NanDub which was suppose to extract ASF from WMV, but all the Nandub I had downlaod from 0.18 to 1.00 cannot open the WMV file per MS request, checked out that the Virtual Dub included are 1.4 and above version.

Anyone have an earlier Nandub version that uses the 1.3c virtual dub engine?

Re: WMV to avi or mov?? Here's the link for Virtual Dub

EASIER WAY TO DO IT THAN DOWNLOAD NANDUB. USE TMPEGENC. RENAME THE WMV EXTENSION TO ASF. IT WILL NOT OPEN THE FILE UNLESS YOU DO THIS. YOU CAN CONVERT AND JOIN AFTER THIS, HOWEVER, LIKE ASF'S WMV HAVE TROUBLE SYNCHING AUDIO AND VIDEO. TO REMEDY THIS JUST CONVERT THE WMV TO A WAV FILE FIRST USING TMPEGENC. BROWSE TO THE VIDEO FILE YOU WANT TO USE TO CONVERT ITS AUDIO TO WAVE IN THE AUDIO IMPUT SECTION AND THEN UNDER FILE IN TMPEGENC SELECT SAVE AS "WAV". ONCE YOU HAVE CONVERTED TO A WAV THEN BROWSE TO ORIGINAL VIDEO FOR VIDEO INPUT AND NEW SAVED WAV FOR AUDIO. START CONVERSION AGAIN TO VCD. WORKS PERFECTLY.

Re: Ops Here's the link for Virtual Dub

ani says:
There's a demo program out there called TMPG to convert video into MPG.

Although it doesn't say it features WMV conversion if you try it it looks like it works.

Unfortunately, it keeps locking up my computer every time the video changes "clips" that the WMV conveniently (lie) stores.

The website is http://www.tmpgenc.com/ but i don't remember where i downloaded it from.
Look for it and try your luck.

Re: Hey, by the way...

Windows Media Video/Audio
As the name suggests, you can play it with the windows media player. For WM8, you need WMP 7 or above.

Hey, the problem is that .WMV files is a Microsoft standard for their Media Player as far as I can tell. I am now finding this out after having converted about 40 hours of family videos onto CD's as .WMV files. I wanted to share them with family ... clip out pieces, etc. after I finished this project, only to now find out I am locked into this format!!!!!!! BUMMER!!!!!!!!!
The good news is that Microsoft has a beta package that is a Media Player Bonus that lets you work with .WMV files, but it is beta ... it does have some bugs, and it keeps locking up my PC.

The final solution !!!!

It's easy....

-Download TMPGEnc from http://www.tmpgenc.com

-Rename your WMV file to *.AVI

-And now you can convert your file to mpeg with TMPGEnc !

TO RENAME IT JUST RIGHT CLICK ON THE FILE AND CHOOSE THE RENAME OPTION. TO CONVERT JUST FOLLOW THE STEPS ON MY PREVIOUS POST.

Re: The final solution !!!!

: What is "Graph Editor"? It's actually GraphEdit and it comes with the Microsoft DirectX 8 SDK, which you get with MSDN or download from Microsoft's web site.

: It lets you see and alter the path of software (codecs and drivers) used to read and play or write a multimedia file.

: When I get GraphEdit, what do I do?

: 1) Use the File->RenderFile menu option to load in a file.
: 2) Remove the last two "filters" (or software components) from the graph. These default to your sound card driver and your video card driver. We don't want that, we want to convert to a different file format.

: We'll do AVI, because that's what you'll want if you're using AVI editors to edit the movie.

: 1) Use the File->RenderFile option and choose your ASF file (can use WMV, etc)
: 2) The default graph is built for you
: 3) Delete any filters after (but not including) the Windows Media Audio Decoder filter
: 4) Delete any filters after (but not including) the ASF ICM Handler filter
: 4) Insert a new filter (Graph->InsertFilters) called "AVI Mux" from the DirectShow filters section
: 5) Link the ASF ACM Out to XForm In of Windows Media Audio Decoder
: 6) Link XForm Out of Windows Media Audio Decoder to Input 1 of AVI Mux
: 7) Link ASF ICM Out to Input 2 of AVI Mux.
: 8) Insert a new filter called "File writer" from DirectShow section and choose a file name
: 9) Link the AVI Out of AVI Mux to the In of your file writer
: 10) Right-click the AVI Mux filter and choose Properties
: 11) Choose the Full option of the Interleaving section and click OK (this makes the sound and video match up and is the whole point of the AVI format)
: 10) Press the play button
: 11) Wait until the play button is active again - this means the thing is finished (you can right-click on AVI Mux and look at the Current Position and Duration count to see how far in seconds the conversion has progressed during the conversion)
: 12) Have fun editing your AVI

Re: The final solution !!!!

This almost worked for me. However, my mwv file contains the MS MPEG-4 Video Decompressor, so I left that in after the ASF ICM Handler and linked it to Input 02 of of the AVI MUX. Now, I see the video but it appears upside down.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
