Software Description

Powerhouse all-in-one multimedia software offering conversion, ripping, editing, recording, burning, playback (including full playlist and full screen video support), and much more. Powerful, yet easy to use audio, video (VCD), and data CD/DVD burning are all fully supported. Other advanced features include video capture, video creation/combining/extraction, video editing, batch video processing, media management, audio merge, MusicID audio recognition, lyrics search, audio tag editing, CDDB/CDDB2/FreeDB support, and more. The audio content of video files can be extracted and saved to sound files, and frames can also be extracted to images files in batch mode. Video files can also be created from still frame images and/or other videos.

Supported conversions include: CD to WAV, MP3, WMA, and OGG; MP3/WMA/OGG/WAV/AIF/VOX/MP2/MPC/G.72x/AU/RAW to MP3/WMA/OGG/WAV; WAV/MP3/WMA/OGG to CD burning, WAV/MP3 Compression, and two-way conversions among MPEG-1, MPEG-2, AVI, WMV, Multi-Page TIFF, and FLIC. MPEG options are available for VCD, SVCD, and DVD compliant output. When converting from audio CD, track information can be dynamically downloaded from the CDDB and used to automatically name saved files.

Video editing is available for AVI (uncompressed), AVI (compressed using any available codec), MPEG-1, MPEG-2, WMV, and ASF. Comprehensive video editing operations are provided (delete frame, delete selection, crop, resize, rotate, mirror, flip, trim, text overlay, adjust audio volume, etc.). In addition, an extensive list of over 30 effects and color adjustment operations allow for powerful video enhancement and alternation. WAV, WMA, and MP3 audio files can be inserted into the video or extracted from the video; and BMP, GIF, JPG, PCX, PNG, RAS, PPM, TGA, and TIF are the supported image formats that can be inserted or extracted. Most video processing operations can also be performed in batch mode on a list of video files using the software's Batch Video Processor

I use a program called TMPGEnc. it converts any vid file to another vid file including svcd and pal. Also, you need to rename the wmv file too asf before you convert it.

Easiest is to download a tool called Stoik Video Converter from http://www.stoik.com (it's freeware)

Get TMPGEnc. It works fine with asf files and wmv files (or asf with "WMV1" as the fourCC header).

Ok, there's a "real" way to do it (renaming is a fake, that's not real mpeg). A bit tricky but it works well.

Here is how to do what you want:
- Download TMPGenc.
(http://www.tmpgenc.com/e_main.html)
- Copy your ".wmv" as ".wma". Convert it into a standard .wav file (same as audio cds format, should be something like PCM 44khz, stereo signed). I used GoldWave but you can use any audio converter you want.
- Rename your original ".wmv" file as ".avi".
- Open it into TmpgEnc (in video source).
- As audio source, give the ".wav" file
- Set the option "System Conversion - Video+Audio" and launch conversion (start button).
- After 1 or 2 (or more probably 700) coffee cups, you get your nice .mpeg file.

wmv to .mpg BUT not to a VCD! HELP!!

Hi Gilles!!

I really admire the way u teach we guys on how to convert a wmv to a mpg file. Hope u can help me and the guys to solve another problem.

After converting to a mpg file successfully, I used the Sony CDRW's video option to burn it into a VCD. But the outcome is that the whole VCD was found corrupted and cannot be view!

What can be the problem? Can u help me?

Okee doke, I was looking at this board out of sheer boredom i guesh, that and because I've become interested in wmv compression, it's simply kickarse! Er, anyway, I don't really know how to solve yer problem, except to ask you if you loaded the vcd setting in TMPG Enc(ntsc or pal, depending on the video and what tv yer gonna play et on). Ou! And also, Sony has a burning program? Ew! Just use Nero to make a vcd, that's what I did. I made an anime music video in avi and then converted et to mpg, then tried burning et to a cd and had the same problem. The problem was the TMPG VCD setting I told ya abouts. Just cos the file is an mpeg doesn't mean yoo an just stick et on a vcd, gotta use the settings meanne (it's ma way of saying man, lay offs :P). So yah, try that, and use Nero, and hopefully yer probby will beh fixed. Hope et works! Well, cya!

WMV is useless. It's just a ploy from Microsoft to gain market share. You can only save your work as a .WMV. That is your only choice.

Just saving as .mpg doesn't work for other media players outside of Microsoft like Real Player, etc...because it's not a true .MPG file.

Save yourself a lot of trouble and use something else that's 'REAL'.

Just Rename the WMV file to MPG.
Load it as the Video Sorce in TMPGENC (Im using version 2.54 plus) and start the encoding... it will quickly zip it out to a normal MPG.

The name of the file has changed, and windows media player can still read it because it recognizes it as a wmv file despite the .mpg extension, but it is still a .wmv file. This is like renaming a jpeg file from 1.jpg to 1.txt: you can then open it in a text editor and you will see that it still contains the jpeg header.

VCD dat file's are mpg file's but then renamed.
Just change the extension to mpg then play it with media player

I usually use cyberlink vcd player. That's good enough.
