Tectonic - An Earthquake Sonification Library Free for Ableton Live
Tectonic - An Earthquake Sonification Library Free for Ableton Live
I've come across a number of sonification (definition) projects where scientific data is processed, often these days by musicians, in order to give scientists an added level of sensory perception to help them understand the information they're working with better. A Geiger counter is one of the simplest examples.
These days however it is becoming more common for musicians to take scientific data as input for the purpose of producing sounds for use in music.
This is exactly what Micah Frank has done over a 14 month period using data provided by the US Geological Survey.
By parsing the data and routing them through granular, subtractive, and physical modeling processes, Frank has 'profiled' hundreds of earthquakes as miniature sound sculptures.
Some of the best and most interesting sounds have been selected to be part of the Tectonic library.
The main features are:
- Almost one hour of granular and subtractive ambient soundscapes
- A huge collection of programmed content for Ableton Live
- Ableton Instrument Rack with extensive Macro mapping
System Requirements:
- Ableton Live 8.2.1
- 250 MB of physical RAM
- 1.2 Gigabytes (GB) of free hard disk space
